While I liked his tough NO BS style, his vulgar comments were way, way overboard, rude, distasteful and despicable.

Funnily enough I don't remember you saying this about Trump when he made remarks about Mika, Megyn Kelly, and mocked a disabled reporter. All I remember you saying is how this President is not gonna take it lying down and the media was getting a taste of their own medicine so good on Trump.

Did you by any chance catch the selective amnesia plaguing the Trump administration?

@Clayton

If in fact there was collusion between the Russians and the Trump campaign, what are the allegations and what evidence has been discovered/uncovered to prove that a crime was committed and who was the crime against? Cite the law which was broken.

Allegation - The Trump campaign colluded with a foreign adversary (the Russian government) to win the Presidency. The Russian government was "very aggressive and brazen" (roughly quoted from Director Comey) in its efforts to tilt the public opinion towards Trump. To this end, they contacted and met in person with Trump campaign officials a number of times. Most of these meetings or contacts were not disclosed in a proper manner as is legally required.

Evidence - https://twitter.com/DonaldJTrumpJr/status/884789839522140166

This came straight from Don Jr (so no fake news shenanigans). The subject line of that e-mail chain reads "Russia - Clinton - private and confidential". The sender says "This is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr Trump.". Don Jr replies with "If it’s what you say, I love it, especially later in the summer.". The mail is also forwarded to Jared Kushner (adviser to the President), and Paul Manafort (campaign manager at the time). Both attend the meeting as well. Jared Kushner then conveniently forgets to mention the meeting on his SF-86 security clearance form (willful lying on this form is a federal offence, although prosecution is very rare due to difficulty in proving in intention to mislead). He later acknowledges the meeting, updates his SF-86 form 3 times adding more than 100 foreign contacts (thats a lot of people to forget ever meeting).

http://www.businessinsider.com/kushners-explanation-of-security-clearance-form-omissions-russia-meeting-prompt-skepticism-2017-7

Law - Section 30121 of Title 52 of federal campaign law, which deals with "contributions and donations by foreign nationals". "It is illegal for a foreign government or a foreign national to give something of value to a candidate or campaign.".

Dirt on an opponent is counted as "something of value". But don't take my word for it. Here is former judge Andrew Napolitano from the GOPs favorite Fox News - https://youtu.be/OroKp3Qx2lU?t=1m30s

Hope this clears it up.

@katsu

I agree. The man is a buffoon, but maybe he is innocent of collusion. But the larger point here is that the buck stops with the President.

Even if Trump did not himself willfully collude, he hired people who had extremely dishonest about their dealings with the Russians. Flynn, Sessions, Kushner, all seem to have had some sort of collective amnesia with regards to their meetings with the Russians during their confirmation hearings or on security clearance forms. As much of an idiot Trump is, I think he understands that dirt on any of these people will bring him down too.

Not to mention the brazen nepotism of appointing family members to be special advisers, taking holidays to go to your own golf clubs on taxpayer dollars (something that Trump supporters are curiously silent on), etc. While these are not prosecutable criminal offences, it still raises significant questions over the strength of the US democracy and the intelligence of the enablers of this phenomenon.

@BBush

Investigations take time.

I see you did not grow so impatient over the 4-year investigation into Benghazi.

Posted in: Republican lawmakers rally around Sessions as Trump intensifies pressure See in context

Not to mention, he also threw dirt on Andrew McCabe, acting director of the FBI.

So we have a situation where the POTUS publicly slanders and fires the head of the FBI (a registered Republican), then publicly slanders the acting head of the FBI, and casts aspersions on the special counsel (again a registered Republican, and also a war hero).

The only thing common between these 3 individuals is that they are or were in-charge on investigating the Trump campaign for collusion with Russia.

Add to that the public humiliation of AG Sessions (who recused himself from the investigation much to the displeasure of the Dear Leader), and I think I am starting to see a pattern here.

The first Senator to endorse Trump, and he throws him under the bus just like that.

Loyalty is a two-way street. What's the point of being loyal to someone who just wants to save their own skin?

This looks to be a ploy to humiliate Sessions into resigning, thus clearing the way for appointing a new AG who will fire or hinder Mueller's investigation.

You have to wonder, why this sudden and increased hostility. The timing seems suspect. Is Mueller getting too close for comfort?

So what's the libs excuse? Oh, so they get a pass?!

The constant use of "libs" in your answer show that for you it is not about whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia.

To you it is about keeping "libs" out of power, who you consider to be the root of all evil and malaise in America.

I suspect that even if Putin himself said we helped Trump and we have compromising material on him and his team, you would still not a have a problem with the President of the United States and his team held hostage to blackmail by a foreign adversary.

And thus I believe that no matter what happens, you will never try to hold Trump and his team accountable.

Nor will you ever even hold them to same standards of scrutiny as you did Obama and Hillary.

Because "libs" are the problem here, not what team Trump did, isn't it?

First they say there was no collusion.

Next they say it was just 1 meeting about adoptions and other policy.

Then they admit they went into the meeting after being promised dirt on Clinton, and after being told it came from the Russian government, but it wasn't delivered.

Finally we get to know that they even lied about the number of people attending this meeting.

And remember, this is just 1 meeting, and who knows how much else are they concealing and lying about.

If it was a nothingburger, why lie so much about it?

Why did Jared Kushner update his SF-86 security clearance form 3 times adding more than 100 contacts and places?

You can go to prison for intentionally lying on your security clearance form. Is this why all the lying is happening?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_q4U0f60TsM

Even people at Fox News (Charles Krauthammer, Chris Wallace and Ship Smith) are now calling it bungled collusion. Bungled collusion is still attempted collusion.

But we will get the usual response. But Obama, but Hillary.

The argument that Hillary would have been worse doesn't mean you can be just as bad.

And like clockwork, the inept media falls for his shenanigans. We clearly don't have any real journalism anymore. Everything is about ratings and more ratings. By giving trump more airtime, medias only making him more popular. He comes off as an underdog and we all love an underdog. My thinking is the hurt from his win had completely clouded minds to rationality.

Press Secretary Sean Spicer said the Donald's tweets are the official statements of the President of the United States of America, and "the tweets speak for themselves". Is the media wrong to cover the official statements of the POTUS? Is it the media's fault that he is writing childlike tweets and throwing temper tantrums on Twitter rather than making meaningful policy statements? The President is acting like a entitled kindergartner and name-calling people and the media is supposed to be talk about his policy initiatives that the President himself does not have the mental capacity to understand and never discusses in the first place?

Everything is about how one feels now. Zeus help us. It's going to be a bumpy ride!!

Yeah, why should we care about how people feel when the POTUS demeans women and makes sexist and childish remarks. No one should care that the President openly trashes the independent media, the institutions of the US, and makes a mockery of the US at home and abroad.

What are the odds on the Donald never realizing the irony of using footage of a WWE fight (which is staged and hence, fake) to call out someone else as fake? My money is on never.

@Attila @Bass

There was no Russian interference in the election.

https://youtu.be/vL5m4mM394U?t=6m56s

But I guess should take the opinion of JT posters over the (as Comey put it) "high confidence judgement of the entire intelligence community".

It's funny that the same people who screamed for and got 21 hearings into Benghazi (the 9/11 attacks had 22 hearings for reference) are completely not concerned that a foreign government, an adversary like Russia no less, infiltrated and interfered in the election process. Elections are an essential part of democracy and freedom that all Americans love to tout. What would have happened had there been evidence that Russia interfered in the elections in 2008 when Obama won? We would have probably seen close to 50 hearings from the Republicans and immediate calls to nullify the election.

Trump supporters are saying anyone who wants to pursue Russia is being partisan. I thought Hillary was a stupid choice for a candidate. I thought maybe Trump deserved a chance despite his reputation and antics. I don't even have a dog in the race. But I want to see the most powerful country in the world, with the most powerful military the world has ever seen, to be led by a sane and rational person. I disagreed with some things Obama did, but he wasn't a maniac. The fact that the President of the United States of America writes childish messages on Twitter on topics and policy issues that he knows nothing about and does not bother to educate himself on, and that his fans cheer him on as he does so, is deeply disturbing. We are all better off hoping for a sane and rational person to lead the US, and Trump is not that person.

Posted in: Comey says Trump fired him to undermine FBI's Russia investigation See in context

I just don't understand. How come people don't think this is a big deal? The former director of the FBI, under oath, in a public hearing, called the President of the United States a bare-faced liar and an untrustworthy person. He also said he could not talk about these conversations to the people at the Justice Department, because he did not know who he could trust there. Aren't people concerned by this? Comey, by the way, as far as I understand, is a Republican himself. And he never had to take notes for conversations with Obama, but did so with Trump because he immediately knew he was talking to a fundamentally dishonest person. It is amazing that Obama met Comey twice during 8 years, whereas he already had 3 meetings and 6 phone calls with Trump in 4 months.

Trump defenders can say what they want (Obama hurr-durr, Clinton hurr-durr), I can't think of a situation where the Head of a major intelligence agency had as much severe distrust of a President, and later on openly called him a liar.

Given that Mr. Flynn himself said "If you are asking for immunity, you are probably guilty of a crime", and given how Mr. Trump was informed by DAG Yates, Obama, and Flynn himself that he was under investigation and still got hired by Trump, it would be interesting how Trump spin-doctors will spin this one. We will soon get a glimpse of their talking points on this board I guess.

Posted in: Trump revealed classified info to Lavrov at White House: officials See in context

A level-headed, thoughtful and in-part legal analysis of this farce. Highly recommended read.

https://www.lawfareblog.com/bombshell-initial-thoughts-washington-posts-game-changing-story

Relevant parts about the denial by McMaster and Tillerson.

Deputy national security advisor Dina Powell has denied the story as false. Notably, national security advisor General H.R. McMaster limited his denial to the fact that, “At no time were any intelligence sources or methods discussed and no military operations were disclosed that were not already known publicly.” Likewise, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has denied disclosure of any information on “sources, methods or military operations.” These are both very carefully worded statements that leave open the possibility that classified information was disclosed other than sources and methods or that classified information was disclosed which might be used as a basis to infer sources and methods not directly disclosed.

Leaving that aside, I also love the way Trump is reported to have brought up the classified info.

In his meeting with Lavrov, Trump seemed to be boasting about his inside knowledge of the looming threat. “I get great intel. I have people brief me on great intel every day,” Trump said, according to an official with knowledge of the exchange.

The fact that we all know and can easily imagine Trump being perfectly capable of making that statement is just astounding. The President of the United States, the most powerful man in the world, is boasting like a third-grader with an overly inflated ego.

I wonder what US allies will think now before sharing intel with the US? And what if their distrust of Trump causes them to withhold crucial intel and leads to a terror attack in the US? I suppose the Trump brigade would still defend him.

Knew I should have invested in popcorn and soda stocks.

Watching from the outside, it is interesting to see all this go down. Kinda funny really. The US beat the USSR in the cold war, but is now about to lose to Russia in a much more fundamental and emphatic way, namely the undermining of the concept of democracy and freedom which the used to US stand for and was a champion of. And Russia achieved this by simply capitalizing on the now seemingly unbridgeable gap in US politics and wider society. People on the right would rather the country burn down than trust or work with "liberals". People on the left will engage in name-calling (racist, sexist, xenophobe, etc), instead of producing more concrete arguments. Both sides engage in ad-hominem attacks and insults. It is fascinating to watch.

The other case to watch is that of the President itself. It is bewildering to watch Trump. Politics can be petty and dirty, but nonetheless you expect some dignity and class from the President and his office. Honest mistakes aside, even Bush looks like a luminary next to Trump. The fact that he tweeted he possibly has tapes of Comey conversation is so unsettling. Even as a non-US citizen, I have better expectations of a US president. And then to watch people cover for him is just prime-time entertainment at this point. Just get some popcorn, sit back, and enjoy the show.

I, for one, would actually give Trump some credit for this one, although I am pretty convinced that McMaster and Mattis were behind this. Assad used chemical weapons on his own people, despite assurances from Russia that their cache would be contained. Syria needed to be told that this won't be tolerated. I still think Obama made a huge blunder when he did not order strikes on Syria back in 2013 when the chemical weapons were first used. Although back then, Trump tweeted that we should stay out of Syria, in spite of his hypocrisy I am willing to concede that this action was necessary.

Wow. I had no idea that Nunes, Paul Ryan, Lindsey Graham, AG Sessions, the FBI, CIA, NSA,etc. were all far left media.

All you other plebians, bow down and salute our right-win overlords, for only they know the truth. And do not dare question Trump and his tweets!

Sounds a lot like a cult, innit?

I think more the left are finding it harder to run from the truth.

The truth is that the Republicans on the House and the Senate intelligence committees say they have no evidence, the AG says he has seen no evidence, and the House speaker (again, Republican) says there is no evidence. Who's running from the truth again?

“Are you going to take the tweets literally?” Nunes said.

Yeah, why take the President's word literally? It's not like he is the most powerful person in the world and the leader of the free world whose words have weight, right? Right?

If no evidence of wiretapping at Trump Tower emerges, his credibility would be newly damaged.

Ah, but herein lies the crucial mistake. Trump never had any credibility. But most importantly, his base doesn't even care. They hate Obama/Libs/Dems so fiercely they couldn't care less that the President lied in a fit of petulance.

As I have said in a previous post, Trump was correct when he said he could shoot someone and not lose a single vote. Most of his base will never not believe that Obama had his wires tapped, and no one can convince them. If the FBI says tomorrow he is beholden to Putin and Russia, all he has to do is tweet "FAKE NEWS", and most of his supporters will keep their ears shut and follow him blindly.

Asked Wednesday if he had ever briefed Trump on the investigation or given the president any reason to believe he had been wiretapped by the Obama administration, Sessions said, “The answer is no.”

So, when is the new AG getting "FIRED"?

For all the stupidity Trump has displayed, he got one thing absolutely correct when he said "I can stand in the middle of 5th avenue and shoot someone, and I would not lose a single vote". Good luck trying to convince Trump supporters that without proof this allegation of wire tapping is meaningless. They will forever believe that this happened. Their line of reasoning is the same as bass - "I'm not a partisan but the Dems and Libs suck and should be shipped off to outer space".

Trump is now a cult leader. I honestly think the FBI can reveal his connections to Putin tomorrow and nothing would change. All Trump will have to do is tweet at 3 in the morning that Obama's friends in the FBI leaked this, that its fake news, and that its not a big deal to have connections with Russia, and his supporters will lap it up.
