Too bad this is nothing more than a gold rush now. They heard SK came through with it and now they want in on the money without understanding jack. This is just like other countries demanding compensation from Germany for its war crimes almost a decade after it happened. It just doesn't work like that.

Rape, murder, torture etc. happens in every war... so how does it entitle them to any compensation before anyone else who went through similar things? If anyone could enlighten me, be my guest.

As it stands, these women are out of touch with reality.

This is downright disrespectful to EVERY other victim.

Posted in: Should the statue of a girl dedicated to the memory of Korean women forced to work in Japanese military wartime brothels be removed from outside the Japanese embassy in Seoul? See in context

There's a word for what South Korea is doing and it's 嫌がらせ, look it up. Out of all the locations, they put it in front of the Japanese embassy. What a coincidence, right?

Sure, Abe's government doesn't have the moral high ground on this, but let's please not act like the Korean government is actually interested in "justice" for the individuals that were abused. "Comfort women" have become nothing more than political ammunition. I find that kinda sad.

Put it in a park and rename that park to one of the comfort women or whatever. That's a much better way to honor your victims of war.

There would have been a thousand better ways of dealing with this, and the statue idea definitely wasn't one of them. If anything, this just sparked more conflict. (And they knew it would. And there goes the moral high ground)

This was just disrespectful to Japanese people who sincerely want to work with South Korea and to the comfort women themselves. 恥を知れ。

Might seem a little radical of me, but immigrants who commit crimes should be immediately brought back to where they came from, no matter the excuse. I've been disgusted by these politics for quite a while now.

And her solution to the mess she caused is "We can do it." No how, no when. Ridiculous.

@gokai_wo_maneku

"Countries" are a creation of the human imagination. Everyone should be allowed to trave and live freely anywhere in the world.

Try to cross the borders of a few countries illegally and you will see that it is more than just human imagination. Saying no one is allowed to enter is as foolish as saying everyone is allowed to enter. With that being said, I will leave you with a Chinese proverb.

Things will develop in the opposite direction when they become extreme.

@topic So the message of this article is that Japan should loosen its borders? Or is it that someone, who will be forgotten by everyone within 3 days, is sad because he can't stay in Japan?

As someone who's from where loosened asylum control has wrought nothing but chaos thus far (Germany), I am kind of happy that Japan says no. (even when delayed)

Plus, Japan is not really an easy/forgiving environment for refugees, either, so I don't think that the 2000something refugees in Japan right now have an easy time getting by.

The term "hackers" is used so loosely these days it devalues the meaning.

For the record, anyone can run a DoS tool as a collective and bring down a website. These are not hackers, they aren't even scriptkiddies. Just google Low Orbit Ion Cannon (LOIC).

Not to mention that attacks like these only make those hosts offering "DDoS" protection richer.

Other than that, whaling will most likely not stop.

Posted in: Do you support calls in some countries to replace expressions like “Christmas tree” and “merry Christmas” with “holiday tree” and “happy holidays?” See in context

Being German and the Christmas tree being a western custom of German origin, I say no. Why other cultures are so offended about this is beyond me.

I remember that there was an incident in Germany that let a whole christmas-themed event be cancelled just because some muslims "felt offended". I lack any understanding for this sort of issues.

While I'm not a Christian myself, I find stuff like this is just an excuse for foreigners to not have to integrate into society that much. If Christmas/the Christmas tree don't apply to your culture, then you leave them be without trying to change them to suit your special snowflake needs.

If you, as a non-Roman, have problems with how the Romans do things then you simply do NOT come to Rome. It's that simple.

Multiculturalism doesn't work without integration, and from there, mutual acceptance.

Merkel is to blame for this. She's responsible for the "welcome culture". Everyone who died in France that day, died because of Merkel's "we can do it" mentality. Let this be a reminder that the "tolerance" of the west is to blame for this.

When this happens in Germany, she will be officially a traitor to her own people.

@No Ginger

Your claim is accurate. But one has to draw a line after almost 100 years and say enough is enough. We already have more than atoned for the atrocities of WW2, but that's just my opinion.

Guilt is also an understatement since Germans express a form of self-hatred. There's movements that say the Dresden bombings should happen again, for foreign men to rape as many German women as possible because "German genes are evil" and other nonsense like that. Extremists like these are even protected by authorities and not mentioned by media because the German guilt is too strong.

Japan and Germany both have a problem with the amount of their remorse. While too little remorse and nationalism in Japan causes outrage, too much remorse in Germany causes chaos and outrage all over Europe.

Too little remorse is bad, too much remorse is bad. Take it from someone who has to live through all of this.

Posted in: As Europe opens its doors, Japan considers clamping down harder on asylum seekers See in context

As a German, I have to say that this whole refugee thing and migration crisis is NOT about being safe. It's about benefits.

If it was about being safe, they would be happy the moment they set foot in Turkey or any other European country. But no, they especially set their eyes on Germany. They are coming to Europe making demands, throwing away supplies that are prepared for them and given to them while demanding "We don't want your water or food, we want Germany."

In other countries, some of them are throwing defecated matter around in buses and jacking cars to travel to Germany.

And in Germany, if you're caught speaking up against any of this, you're immediately branded a racist and might even be jailed for hate speech when you're just citing what happened. The media downplaying a lot of what's actually going down in Europe doesn't help, either.

So, Japan... do NOT make the same mistake as Germany and keep your doors shut.

The only ones who possibly couldn't approve of this are those who 1.) Don't know in what situation Japan is right now, swayed by media incompetence, censorship and PR 2.) Countries that are already preying on Japan

Some people make no sense and that makes me mad.

Nowhere has it been stated that Japan will even be able to pre-emptively attack anything. But it's also nowhere stated that Japan's neighbors have a much bigger military than Japan itself. And it's nowhere stated that the only reason that Japan isn't conquered, is most likely because of the big brother USA.

Abe doesn't want to be a sitting duck anymore and wants to strenghten Japan's military so it can be independent from the USA. It's not like Japan wants to conquer anything, it's just that they don't want to be conquered.

Just another P.R. campaign... People who really research where Japan is in the world right now will notice that Japan needs a stronger everything, including a military.

How else will Japan ensure its safety? Saying "Please don't conquer us! We want to be peaceful right now, come back later"? The nerve and naivité of some people...

Questions for those that think Japan will use its military power to start a war o f its own again..

Have you looked at Japan's current economical situation? If yes, then...

What would Japan actually gain by starting another war? If you can also answer this, then...

Do you think Japan's military is strong enough to give more than just support to allies? If yes, then...

Why isn't China more dangerous? China dwarves Japan in economical power and military power. That, and THEIR history doesn't really look much better if you think about it. If any of those two, China would benefit from a war.

@Silvafan

Are you serious? You are justifying a crime with another crime. By your logic, Germans could be abducted by Russians/Americans just for Germany's role in the last war, and it would be Germany's fault too! To defend such a concept is simply foolish.

I refuse to defend Japan's crimes, but I also refuse to defend North Korea's crime. Both sides did bad things. However, you can not use a past crime to justify another crime. If that worked, we'd have a lot more murderers on the loose, wouldn't we?

"You did something wrong to me, so I am right to do something wrong to you in return."

Mindsets like these are the oil that keep the gears of war running. And you're defending such a mindset. It is truly saddening. This is exactly what I mean by "questionable morality". I thank you for being such a good example of what I actually mean and wish you a nice day.

本当に腹が立つよねー

I think a few of you people are missing the point here a little bit too heavily. You guys are seriously comparing war atrocities from the last world war with things that happened long after.

Not only that, but you seem to forget that these abductions took place BEFORE Abe. So where is all that "Japan got its just desserts" bullcrap coming from? There's a difference between flat out war-crimes and taking people hostage for political goals.

I'm stunned how nonchalantly and lightly some of you guys can throw around double-standards and compare things which are not related to each other in the slightest. It shows that some of you guys are not even a tad bit better than the "Japanophile war-crime apologists".

Truly disappointing and actually disgusting to a certain degree to say the least...

I have a favor to ask of all of you who engage in this behavior.

If you try to bash, at least do it in a way you're not completely and utterly embarassing yourselves and your questionable morality. I won't name anyone, you know who you are.

That is all. I still wish you guys a nice day, regardless.

Regarding health care and school matters, and even the birth of children, Japan should follow Germany's example. Japan's current system may be the reason why, if my girlfriend wants children in the future, it will have to be in Germany. It takes a lot to suppress the natural drive for reproduction. I really wish that Japan will become more humane in the future regarding this matter,

WatchingStuff

You're such an honest politician.

There are no honest politicians. What, do you think Park seriously cares for these comfort women? If she did, there would already have been consequences for Japan, instead of just "moral pressure". She's clearly using them for an image-boost. It's not like Businessmen care either. And if Businessmen don't care, the chance is pretty high that politicians don't care. Why do you think that "time has been running out" for Tokyo without any real consequences for a while now?

If Park cared about these comfort women, she would have acted, not spoken.

Abe cares as much as Park does - no bit. You can assume that they're both equally aware of the other party not caring. This is exactly why these comfort women will never truly see justice. Park would never endanger economical ties that would benefit both countries in favor of "a few half-dead women who were raped in a war that is long over".

Abe probably knows this really well and will give no apology because he thinks SKorea can't touch him as it is right now. This would also explain Park's, as of now, empty threats. The only thing she can do is PR smear campaigns which can very well also backfire.

It seems heartless, but heartlessness is what politics are about. Sentiments such as "honesty" or "sincerity" have never had a place in politics. I thought history taught you people as much.

(I will probably get at least 15 downvotes from this, but I don't care as long as you get the big picture.)
