Posted in: Ohtani's ex-interpreter charged with stealing $16 mil from baseball star in sports betting case See in context

While Mizuhara’s winning bets totaled over $142 million, which he deposited in his own bank account and not Ohtani's, his losing bets were around $183 million — a net loss of nearly $41 million.

You would think if he wanted to be richer, Mizuhara would have been better off just stealing money from Ohtani's account and transferring it to his from the start instead of getting involved in betting in the first place...but...

Federal investigators say Mizuhara made around 19,000 wagers between December 2021 and January 2024 — nearly 25 bets per day on average. The wagers ranged from roughly $10 to $160,000 per bet, averaging around $12,800. Estrada said investigators did not find any evidence Mizuhara had wagered on baseball.

...averaging to 25 bets a day just shows how truly addicted Mizuhara was and how the whole thing snowballed as he got into more debt. It's all really sad.

Looks like rice fields with plenty of views to see a train incoming.

Exactly. The news on TV is saying she was chasing after the dog, so I wonder if it was off-leash and she was trying to stop it from going near the tracks…

As another user pointed out, there are hundreds if not thousands of kilometers of unfenced railroad tracks running through fields in the countryside. The government / private railroad companies likely don’t deem it economical or necessary to add barriers for every single crossing, especially if it’s just a one-way trail running through a rice paddy.

I think the only way to prevent these kinds of accidents in rural areas is to really teach kids the importance of looking both ways before crossing and to stay back from incoming trains in general. My heart goes out to the family and conductor and passengers who witnessed the accident,

I’m sorry for what happened to Riho and admire her for encouraging others to come forward. Reading this and the other article about the woman who reported the chikan vice-principal gives me hope that more women will stand up for themselves.

When watching this story on the news a few weeks back, there was an older man standing next to her as she spoke out who I assumed to be an uncle or family member, but I was disturbed to find that it was her husband. He is twenty years her senior and only nine years younger than her father… eek.

BOTH parents were home at the time when this tragedy happened?! What the hell were they doing, making a third child? RIP little ones. I hope the passerbys are also okay — definitely traumatic to witness.

The fact that most store clerks are trained to wrap pads and tampons separately in a brown paper bag speaks to the taboo of menstruation here. Of course it's taught in schools, but we're made to feel ashamed for bleeding and that having a period is something that needs to be kept secret or hidden.

but she did not mind having sex for money at 15 did she?

Why are you blaming the fifteen-year-old victim instead of the creepy adults who posed as English tutors and brought her to a hotel to suddenly solicit her for sex?!

Posted in: Woman infected with coronavirus commits suicide at Tokyo home See in context

So far i haven't heard of the virus killing any kids before. Why would she do this for god's sake. Most people recover quickly after a few weeks of rest. Killing yourself and leaving behind a husband and daughter is 100 times more cruel than risking infecting them.

She didn’t commit suicide because she was infected with the coronavirus. She likely had preexisting mental health issues and the self-isolation coupled with a very stressful year amplified feelings of guilt and led her to take her own life.

I pray for her family and that this case draws further attention to the stigma surrounding mental illness and the need for more support.
