Posted in: Parents arrested over fatal poisoning, drugging of 4-year-old daughter in Tokyo See in context

Antifreeze? Antipsychotic meds? Antifreeze is what more than a few young Eastern European brides used to use to slowly poison their elderly husbands because it’s tasteless and hard to detect. And any medicine that ends in “pine” or “Pam”is incredibly dangerous and has to be very carefully prescribed. But doctors in Japan give it out easily to treat anxiety/ depression and they have really nasty withdrawal symptoms. My god those poor children.

Posted in: On Valentine's Day, LGBTQ+ activists in Japan call for right for same-sex couples to marry See in context

Well as history has taught us over and over again, the most vocal opponents of same-sex marriage are usually religious self-hating closeted homosexuals themselves. Normal people don’t care and don’t get fired up over something so trivial.

Plus it’s now technically illegal for non married couples to fornicate in Indonesia… agree with the above. Pattaya in Thailand is a much better deal and their weed tours are pretty fun!

Straight Japanese couples don’t even have the right to use separate surnames so what hope do these people have?

Why is this news? He hasn’t been arrested and Japanese prosecutors throw out most of the cases that are dropped on their desks anyway unless it’s a slam dunk.

Right… and not taking into consideration that every hotel and ryokan in rural Japan is usually 50% staffed by Filipinos and Nepalese.

Transgender individuals are such a small portion of society and they wouldn’t receive so much attention if the hate directed towards them wasn’t so disproportionate.

They’re not hurting anyone so let them be.

Good. Can’t hurt. They got a lot more on the ball than their Japanese counterparts anyway because healthcare in the US is all private and big pharma and government are in bed together and they get the funding… for better or worse. Actually the CDC makes things better for everyone in world except for the people in the US who can’t afford healthcare!

To be fair JT reports when Japanese are arrested abroad when it happens. I remember the story of the Japanese airline pilot who was arrested in Hawaii for public urination. He might have been drunk too.

@Mr. Kipling

Devout Muslims won’t even pet a dog because they are “unclean”. Seriously no jokes. So depending on how religious a Muslim is, I doubt they would patron a pig cafe because they are not allowed to even touch one.

Since I have many Jewish friends who openly eat pork, I doubt a place like this would be a problem for most of them.

Posted in: At trendy Japanese cafes, customers enjoy cuddling with pigs See in context

I don’t agree with any type of animal cafe but those mini pigs actually do make great pets. I knew a couple families who had them as indoor pets growing up in the states. Intelligent as a dog. But people in the states get them from licensed breeders. No idea but if it’s anything like the cat and dog trade in Japan then it’s probably shady.

Do poor and uneducated people in any country do or vote for anything that’s in their best interests? If so then Filipino women wouldn’t need to go abroad and wouldn’t need to remit all their earnings to feed a family they can’t afford and keep the economy afloat at the same time.

I agree with @u___reamer

Japanese police are not as nice as the old guys or female officers staffing the Kobans seem. I got manhandled by ten officers a few years back. Was in the country side and missed my last train back to Tokyo and drinking a beer in front of the station at 4am. Totally disproportionate response to basically nothing. And don’t try to film them or they will get violent if you don’t put down your phone and threaten you with disturbing the peace bs and bring you to a police station. Anyway, poor guy. So young

@Spitfire

Umm you ever been to a 3rd world country? Children are valuable commodities over there and a guarantee that the parents will be taken care of in old age. In 3rd world countries unwanted are at worst sold through black market under the table adoptions. No… Japan has a distinctly first world problem.

I kind of believe the guy. People can have really bad reactions and hallucinate if not taking the right dosage.

In my younger days I took sleeping pills I bought from a pharmacy in Indonesia. Went to the airport and then woke up handcuffed to a hospital bed. Don’t remember anything except that I thought someone was trying to kill me. They let me go after the embassy people came to the hospital. Good thing they didn’t let me on the plane or I would have really been in trouble!

Samsung phones are just overpriced for what they are: android phones that don’t do anything significantly better than their significantly cheaper Chinese counterparts. It’s debatable if iPhones are overpriced but imo they’re more secure and a better deal for your hard earned money.

Preference for boys seems like too easy an answer. I wonder if this author can explain what Japan’s problem is then? Because Japan has never exactly had a preference for boys and has always had more girls than boys yet the birth rate, marriage rate is not that much higher than South Korea’s.

I agree with Ah_so. By definition of power EU passports hands down are the most powerful. I’ll just have to make do with the 180+ countries that I will probably never visit on my American passport.

But I traveled a lot with my ex Japanese wife. I never had a problem with immigration and was never asked questions. My Japanese ex always had a hard time and was asked questions in English she didn’t understand. Just because a passport is “powerful” doesn’t mean immigration will treat you nicely.
