It's great that Trump lost, but at the same time I find it disturbing that 71 million people in the self-professed greatest nation on Earth voted for a continuation of racism, xenophobia, misogyny, ignorance, incompetence, dishonesty, and lunacy.

@zichi Today 10:37 am JST

The general public need to be part of the solution and not the problem.

Exactly. Although Johnson and his fellow incompetents have done U-turn after U-turn, the situation wouldn't have been as bad as it is if there had been better public compliance during the past couple of months with the perfectly sensible slogan of Hands Face Space. Compliance has become very poor in so many places -- in the popular British press we see photo after photo and video after video every day of streets and indoor settings where maskless and undistanced people are simply ignoring the guidance, even (or especially) in areas with a high infection rate.

Go japan you got this, the envy of the world right now and justifiably so!

I don't think so. You seem to be unaware that in East and South-East Asia, Japan ranks about 15th at the moment in terms of the number of deaths per million of the population and about 13th in terms of the number of confirmed cases per million (and that's with the ultra-low amount of testing done here, where again Japan ranks about 10th in this region in the number of tests per million of the population and about 150th in the world).

The media here constantly ignore this, instead focusing on comparing Japan with the situation in Europe and the US, prompting the illusion of the "Japan miracle" as @AG earlier put it sarcastically.

BBC News headline today:

"One virus case sparks mass testing in Xinjiang...

Kashgar city officials say around 4.7m people will be tested over a few days."

This is the way to do it. Test widely then isolate positive cases so they cannot further spread the disease.

I fail to understand the mentality of the people who downvoted comments saying that tax-paying foreign residents should of course be included in the free vaccination program (which has nothing whatsoever to do with whether one intends to get the shot or not).

for the simple fact that the president is asymptomatic, the chances of his recovery seem more secure and faster

With fall and winter coming up (when respiratory infections invariably increase), with the Go To Travel campaign extended to include Tokyo, and with the Go To Eat, Go To Events, and Go To Shopping campaigns set to be launched, I fear we may be in for a rough ride this winter.

On Wednesday, the capital reported 149 new cases, down from 300 to 500 in early to mid-August.

And today it's back up to 276. It's also been announced that Tokyo will be included in the Go To Travel campaign, the Go To Eat campaign will start shortly, and there's a 4-day long weekend coming up. Why are they so short-sighted?

@golfer62

The phrase used by Hashimoto in Japanese was なんとしても, which the English media have reasonably translated as "at any cost", but remember that the English phrase doesn't refer (specifically) to money: it means rather whatever the difficulties or dangers might be, come what may, whatever might happen, even regardless of the consequences. What a reckless statement!

Posted in: Tokyo reports 77 new coronavirus cases; nationwide tally 288 See in context

It is becoming increasingly clear that, leaving aside such things as co-morbidities and age, the actual amount of the inoculum itself, i.e. the initial viral load, correlates pretty closely with the ultimate severity of the disease. This is known to be true of influenza and the original SARS also, and could even be said to be common sense. Masks, though far from perfect, do reduce to some extent the initial viral load that you might inhale, so their usefulness in certain obvious situations should be beyond dispute. People who refuse to wear them at all are not only doing a disservice to others but also to themselves.
