Posted in: Is June the worst month in Japan? See in context

For a Californian, summers were ALWAYS our biggest challenge during our 13 years living in Japan. It was wet, hot, and sticky, and sometimes the cooler relief of June's 'rainy season' was not as bad as July and August. For our last 4 years in Japan, we lived in Kagoshima City and the last 6-weeks we lived there, June to mid-July, it rained...for 40 days straight (two short breaks that lasted only a few hours). Anyhow, we LOVED our years in Japan in spite of the summer weather and would definitely live there again.

Posted in: Would a Trump return to the White House after the November election be good news for Japan? See in context

Unfortunately, neither Biden nor Trump are good for the U.S. As much as I dislike both of them, I do believe the economy could not get any worse under Trump than it is now. I don't see anyone else left to step up. RFK, jr. perhaps? Anyone?

This incident made the news? I am surprised when these type of stories are considered newsworthy. Anyone else? No?

Posted in: Japan needs more public trash cans; Japanese reporter sympathizes, though he doesn’t agree See in context

We lived in Machida City, Tokyo 2003 to 2012, and Kagoshima City after that. It was great to have many parks to take our children to, and there were trash cans always available. Then, sometime around '06 or '07 suddenly the trash cans were removed from parks, and slowly from many other public places. We began to see more litter on the ground and piles in bins outside of convenience stores. Anyhow, it was a very frustrating experience to see that kind of result. As taxpayers, that should be a basic provision to the public.

Posted in: Do you think big tech companies like Facebook should face tougher rules and penalties if they failed to curb hate speech and disinformation? See in context

We are adults and can censor content for ourselves; no need for that to become the responsibility of Facebook nor any other entity.

THE best airline, hands down, and surprisingly, sometimes the cheapest ticket from LAX to NRT. Good news indeed!

Posted in: Did Sony's sexed-up PS Vita ad deserve to be yanked? See in context

The ad is lame. It does not say anything about the product it's selling. The innuendo is silly; seems this is all one big joke. After watching it, the viewer does not know one thing about the PS VITA snd has no good reason to want to find out more. It is simply, low-level.

Posted in: This month marks one year since Caroline Kennedy became U.S. ambassador to Japan. Do you think she has done a good job so far? See in context

There's no easier place to be an ambassador. Cush, cush, cushy job. She keeps a low profile, enjoys tons of perks, and is doing just fine.

WHAT. A. WASTE. OF. TIME!! Really?! People really want to keep spending ¥3000+ on 10kg of rice?

Amazing how they make 'metal' palatable to those who otherwise would hate it. Notches above Lady Gaga, in every way and I hope she disappears as quickly as BABYMETAL has appeared on the music scene! Go girls!!

Posted in: Teacher criticized for attending son’s entrance ceremony instead of her own school’s See in context

This teacher is a true 'role model' and example to her students for their futures. Family first. My kids have all attended public schools here in Japan for the last 10 years, and darn the school system here for how often it does not get 'family first' in many areas. This goes for school clubs, sports teams, etc. Yes, we understand commitment, and teamwork, but come on, we are not owned by any of those!! Glad she decided rightly.

Posted in: Study: Samsung phone durable, but iPhone has edge See in context

That is indeed correct LostinNagoya, iPhone 6 has not been released and is merely rumor at this point. The facts are that 'iProducts', Thomas Anderson, are not typically fragile, having dropped both iPhones and iPods of various models, with only one near 'fatality', of my iPhone 3G. The broken glass panel on front was easily replaced myself with an inexpensive kit purchased online, using a YouTube 'how to' video. It worked great after that. Overall, Apple makes stuff that simply works, looks good, and is built solidly. Everything else out there is generally trying to copy, not innovate. Seriously.

CrossCulture in Kagoshima City--all native speakers, American owned and operated. It integrates summer water sports like snorkeling, paddle boarding, and surfing. They also arrange homestays in California. Good stuff!

Last I checked, a fit, well trained, even muscular I assume, young Olympian should not have any fear of a little girl on a bicycle. Generally there are no guns here in Japan, and she probably just wanted an autograph, or a hug.
