Posted in: Japan's smartphone 'zombies' wreak havoc on the streets See in context

I find Japanese in general (maybe it's a Tokyo thing?) to be pretty good at being unaware of their surroundings, even without this vice. How many times have I had to alert idiots walking forward and looking in another direction? I've lost count... It seems to be popular around here. I think this smartphone thing suits this country very well. Japan is an uncharming place where people try to buy their way to happiness and do their best to avoid interaction with fellow humans the best they can. Perfect!

I totally agree with Knox Harrington on so many levels here. Well put.

@ Hiroshi Hoshino I personally thought your insightful comment was spot on. In fact, after years of living Japan, I too have become very expressionless and zombie-like. This is something my family and friends have commented on when I returned to my home country. I guess it's all a part of surviving and adapting.

Wtf is going on in Fukuoka these days with possessions and evil spirits. Guess it's not only in Tohoku, it's nationwide apparently.

I usually don't comment on the crime related articles, but this one just does me in. Absolutely horrible and unforgivable.

@YongYang Going on 20 years. Yes, I too have met some really intelligent, successful Japanese women---but guess where they are? Abroad.

I'm sorry I don't understand this: "it's a BIG ask without a revolution in thought by Japanese men".

Japanese men are apathetic for the most part.

"But a lack of childcare facilities, poor career support and deeply entrenched sexism are blamed for keeping women at home."

I hear this a lot, but I feel like it's the women who keep the women at home.

People act like Japanese woman are so oppressed, but in all the time I've lived and worked in Japan, I've rarely met a woman who cares about having a career, improving women's situation in the work place and combatting ever present sexism.

Instead, it seems woman here care about finding a husband, getting a Coach bag, producing children, making Kitty-chan obentos, competing with other mothers etc.

They perpetuate the problem IMHO.

It always amazes me whenever I read about women (not only in Japan) covering up their pregnancies and giving birth in secret. Something I will never comprehend. Not to mention the burying in a planter bit.

Posted in: Keihin Tohoku Line to get women-only cars as anti-groping measure See in context

I wish they had segregated cars not only for women, but also a designated car for mothers/children and their strollers, elderly & retired folk into their own car and then a few for students-only. The student section can be broken down into elementary-middle-high school cars. I hate to ride with throngs of middle/high school kids.

I think these news story are posted just to start a fire of "parental negligence in Japan" debate on here. It's a shame that my brain reads the headline and automatically files it in the "here we go again" file. Next we just need another child/parent killing or maybe another child left to die in a pachinko parking lot.

As for S. Palin, I have zero interest in her but I will say, I love the way she wears her hair. I wish more women wore their hair up like that. She's quite attractive, despite everything else.

i like scoobydoo's suggestion. And to Mz up there, families should be placed together. Why spread the misery to the rest of the aircraft? "What can you do?" Yes, make families stay home. Please stay home, have the grandparents come to you. If not, administer a sedative.
