Taiwanese view Japan more enlightened than the continental Chinese who invaded Taiwan after WWII, and they do not hate Japan as South Koreans do.
I don't think so. My sister has worked in Taiwan as a translator for a decade. She has told me the animosity that the Taiwanese harbor against the Japanese for WWII is just as strong as mainland China and SK.

And while the German's can now move on with the respect of their former enemies and victims, the Japanese continue to whitewash their actions, provoke their neighbors, who suffered horrible atrocities at the hands of the Imperial Japanese Army, and as a result will continue to be looked upon with a complete lack of any respect.
I agree with you.

China, Japan or South Korea. Take your pick. All three lack tact and common sense.

MarkX, I agree with you. I have been fortunate to have lived in a few countries in Europe, Mexico and Japan. I have also noticed the tendency of the Japanese to be blissfully ignorant of their surroundings: stopping suddenly in crowded areas, not looking before they make a turn, reading books while walking, texting, etc. I can't even count the number of times Japanese co-workers have complained about the "bad manners" of Chinese and Koreans. When I point out that I have seen Japanese doing the same on the streets, I get all types of excuses.

Besides, "earning respect" is a two-way street, where you can't dole out respect to the Japanese, unless they deserve it.
Exactly. Respect is earned, not given.

I met five Chinese women and a Vietnamese man working as "trainees" when I was a CIR on the JET Programme. Their living conditions were horrible; living in containers (like storage containers) with no running water.
