The website says taxes are included, the assumption is fuel tax is included too. Why do you think it is extra? Where on Jetstar's website does it even suggest that?

Not in the least homophobic? What if it DID encourage homosexuality? So what?

In this spick and span society we live in here in Japan, I'm surprised no one has considered the prospect of catching germs from the "used" candy!!! Ewww!

As some have suggested, it is just another (successful) attempt to get AKB48 (should it be AKB90+ now?) in the news and to get more people suckered into buying more franchised goods. Yuk!

People who did "stuff" in the last year. 2011 saw captain and coach of Nadeshiko Japan I believe, Skater Mao chan has been here too, but from all walks of life. Not exactly sure of the criteria. I've not made the list yet.

@Jessebabay - He could have deceived her by saying he was a taxi driver? Agree it is confusing though.

Eitehr way, my guess is she is lucky to be alive. After that treatment, and when he has had enough, he probably wasn't going to just release her and say "thanks". Creepy to the max, and very scary.

@gw

Yeah but sadly triage in Japan means "our beds are full or we dont have THAT kind of doctor, go to another hospital"

I think you are being unfair to the Japanese medical teams - the response after 3.11 was amazing in my very humble and admittedly unqualified opinion. I think people excel in adversity and wilt in normality. I agree the often reported cases of pregnant women being ferried from hospital to hospital is almost criminal in this society.

****@wanda

Why do they believe that there is no potential for tsunami damage all along Tokyo Bay?

nigelboy hits it on te head, the entrance to Tokyo bay at the Pacific side is relatively small. 2.6m predicted for Shinagawa, 2m or less elsewhere. Not so ridiculous.

@yasukuni

The scariest question really is how Tokyo will cope with 150,00 injured people when people in trouble can't get to a hospital now.

Did you know, there are just 212 ambulances in Tokyo? There will be a lot of triage going on, and I also think you'll find that the scale of the disaster will see doctors and nurses working for the first 48 hours (at least) non-stop.

Actually, I'd like to do a refresher course myself and get my wife to do one - anyone know where to learn first aid in Tokyo?

btw, google and read up in English on the availability of first aid courses in Japan and you will know more more than 90% of the people who were born here! ;) http://www.jrc.or.jp/english/activity/safety.html

What the Japanese do with American fast food burgers is no problem. What freaks me out is how CLEAN their stores are compared to the dumps we have here in the U.S.

On the whole, service is a different league too.

@southsakai - Based on Tim Topper's post, just booked family of 4 to Okinawa in Golden Week for 80k. Half of the fare for ONE person on ANA/JAL. But don't trust me, the less people using them the easier it will be to get bookings! ;)

@clinton. Fantastic!

@squidbert - You can use pyrolysis to remove stuff like creosote and other chemicals from soils, so it is possible. I don't know of anywhere that has done it for Caesium, etc, but then again, (hopefully) that wouldn't be a common practice anyway. It is an encouraging sign that things are moving forward.

I may be missing something but it doesn't look too bad. Just checked their website, and sure there are extra costs, but not extortionate: up to 20kg of check in baggage is 1,000yen, and there is a booking fee of 200 yen person. I can't choose my seats though, for that I have to pay an extra 690 yen. Even with that, it looks like a return flight to Chitose would still be the same cost as a one way flight on ANA or JAL. With a duration of 1.5 hours, I think I can safely skip needing to buy the food. As far as I can tell, everything else (taxes etc) is included. Sad thing is the return train fare is going to be more expensive than ane leg of the flight!

Posted in: Making better use of Japan’s female talent, who are educated and trained in the same way as men, should be the first step to promoting diversity. See in context

How about making use of the vast army of unemployed and underemployed University graduates before enticing mothers to abandon their children to daycare centers and forgo a stable home environment to raise the next generation.

@neversubmit - about 50% of those you mention (un(der)employed graduates) are actually women! Or did you just mean to use the male section of that group? Two new grads join a firm, lets call it a traditional firm. One gets menial tasks, the other gets to bring the tea/buy the afternoon cookies - which one is the woman? The profiles are so ingrained in society that it is going to take a huge kick up the butt to get firms to tap the intellect that they hired in a decent way. And sadly, the avilability of good childcare facilities in Japan is still too prehistorically small to entice too many mothers to abandon their kids just now. Moreover, the culture doesn't support the idea either. In the US, my ex-colleagues dived out of a meeting at 16:30 so they could get to daycare to pick up their kids. The alternative was to be late and face legal action based on the concept of neglect - can you imagine that happening here?

Instantaneous goal-line technology is objective, so there'd be no reason for players and fans to whine anymore that they've been cheated

These are football fans, you might be surprised! There will ALWAYS be an outcry and the players and fans will call into question the accuracy of the system, and was it calibrated correctly, is one of the sensors tethered correctly, lets check the video evidence again.

Leave it with the ref, take it on the chin if he gets it wrong and enjoy the game!

Elsewhere on JT right now is a story on US approval for an obesity drug!

Many foreign food chain restaurants have flopped (Nathan’s, Arby’s) because they have not been able to adapt their menus to suit Japanese consumers.

Generally this means reality sized portions that meet the need (i.e. enough) but don't require a doggy bag to take home so you have to keep eating the same thing day after day!

I'll pass on these specials.

5) Make an NHK program about new trends in energy saving at home: re-using bath water for laundry

Two things associated with this: 1) According to many posters here, no one watches NHK. 2) Reusing bath water for laubdry is extremely common plance. Energy saving is quite prevalent in Japanese homes with use of fluorescent lamps, etc, now switching to LED. Where they fall down is insulating the home against heat and cold.
