How come no is complaining or noticing the long flowing hair that would get into the way of finding shellfish underwater? The ama have that covered.

I hope the swimming is just recreational and the zoo isn't forcing the elephant(s) to swim all day

to me the silver lining in this story is that he wasn't driving. imagine if he was driving and decided to step out of the moving car. could've been a lot worse story

the economy will fall in the short term 2-5 years, but then will recover with people (J and otherwise) discovering this as a tourist paradise and the land getting a chance to produce some tropical fruit not found elsewhere in Japan... I'm dreaming coconuts and pineapples

Posted in: 'Haafu' to represent Japan at Miss Universe 2015 See in context

While the Japanese themselves see no negative connotation of the word, the people subject to it, are offended and that is what matters. Same as the argument for the African Americans. They objected to the N word and had been designated another agreeable term of African Americans. The big difference here is that they agree to it rather than being forced to be called what they consider derogatory. One other thing that needs to happen is that the media should be banned from using such terms. The average shimojo does not know any other way of saying it as long as all media announces saying that a 'haafu' is this or that. That I believe is the first change that needs to happen. They can describe the origins later, but in this case a 'Twenty year old beauty from Nagasaki is representing Japan at the Miss Universe'

Posted in: Japanese tourist says guide in India raped her See in context

For all of India's dangers, I think the lady in question was being too naive. I know many Japanese women who will not accept some man's offer of showing them around IN JAPAN. While trust is a undeniably good trait, we normally teach children (across the world) to be careful while dealing with strangers. My sympathies with the lady that she paid a horrible price for her trust.

Posted in: Indian police arrest 3 for gang rape of Japanese scholar See in context

I'm from India and think that India as a travel destination is great for groups but not solo travelers. I keep telling my japanese and other friends to not travel alone or to make local friends before they travel. I also try and introduce them to friends or someone I trust from where they are going to. Unfortunately, the back packer routine doesn't work there and maybe it'll change sometime in the future, but not yet. This is as good a time as any for the girls parents or any other parents, friends, relatives to take note of this news and avoid traveling alone to these places. I sincerely hope the girl is able to recover from this traumatic experience.

Disillusioned raises some very valid questions. Do not brush this guy off as a psycho - analyze his behaviour before the crime, too much manga? What kind of manga? Any kind of addiction including ones from the wholesome and by do ideal 'japanese culture'. Get those facts and start profiling others to avoid further crimes in Saitama and the rest of Japan.

He could have easily known both how it would have felt to kill and to have been killed if he tried stabbing himself with the knife ten times. In fact, I hope he is encouraged to try that as fair punishment.

Posted in: Japanese TV makers bet on super-HD as World Cup looms See in context

This is a fine example of digging your own graves. First, their USP is a soon to be outdated technology such as resolution and secondly they go in as a group (panasonic, sony and sharp). So, they will not earn any profit that might even save one of them.

It's a no-win but let's sink together plan.

I'm with timtak here to start making TVs with their own OS's rather than the 4K, 8K or whatever that comes next.

Posted in: Tokyo governor says casinos not top priority; urges debate See in context

They are hoping ship tycoons and billionaires and multi millionaires from Northern China who go to Macau etc with private jets.>

So this plan MAY work as long as there is no competing casino in northern china? What happens if a new casino opens in China or Korea ?

Will it be a repeat of the electronics/auto industry situation?

Posted in: Abe's reform plan leaves tough questions unanswered See in context

agree with MGigante. It is a draft at this stage and a very Japanese one at that. A lot of subtlety, and general lack of hardline rules.

For the directors and women, they have listed steps such as reporting these to the planned governance body which I see as a step in the the right direction (rather than no steps at all).

The rest of the report seems to be blaming the draft from a corporate view such as lack of tax cuts (corporate), casino business, easier dismissal of employees, all of which are still not agreed, let alone start implementing steps on these.

It's a long haul plan, I'd wait and watch. If you're looking short term, it's time to look elsewhere, like a few years ago.

Posted in: Japan's industrial production falls 2.5%; inflation up 3.2% See in context

sorry for the layman comment, but can someone explain that if the population is decreasing in general, why is it expected that production will rise? are they aiming for future supply or just hoping that fewer people will need more stuff?

I was honestly surprised with this list. I expected it to be the usual surface level looks based list. Like the writer, I agree that taken as a whole, and not restricting it to women, the opposite of this list is the mark of a beautiful person.

While the TV station is drawing flak, it's only reflective of the society trends. And this girl chose to be on this show knowing what she could gain and lose. I pity her that she went on it despite knowing, but didn't have the courage to live with that choice.

the 'new experience' is -

The hotel's refined and knowledgeable tea master will guide guests on a journey through the world of tea, and to help them to create a unique blend

They've had the standard afternoon tea set with their own blended tea/coffee and all the other 'works' mentioned for some while.

These cowardly attacks are way too common in India. And like cos pointed out, this stuff is daily use, easily available. However, unlike India I hope the assailants are found and hope they have to part with what they've taken of the poor lady's life which is for the rest
