"If U.S. forces leave Japan, Japan will be a warzone."

I believe that is what it will take for the nasayers of American bases to understand the situation.

On another note. It is rare indeed that we hear the British complain about giving the Yanks the boot or the Germans or Italians. Yet, the Germans and Italians are a bit more vocal than the Brits with the Germans being more-so, yet no-one is as vocal as the Japanese. Japanese dissent is racially driven?

"Insinuating that Europeans were too cowardly to stand up to Hitler and just sat around waiting to be saved is a huge insult to all those who fought in the war before America finally finished payrolling the Germans and got dragged kicking and screaming into the fight when Japan kicked sand in America's face."

And this comment is not an insult to North Americans?

Why leave? The Taliban and its Al Qaeda connections have not been defeated by NATO forces yet. In all reality I doubt the Taliban will ever be defeated as the the ideology will live on, however they need to be set back a lot more than they are now.

problems happen in this part of afghanistan involving attacks by insurgents or terrorists. in feb. there was a suicide attack by an insurgent or terrorist who dressed like a police officer.

been partying in roppongi for a good lotta years. never once was there a problem. too many people on this thread are making too much noise about the lurking danger on the streets of roppongi. as for the american embassy issuing a warning. that's fine. when americans are victims of crime in a foreign country then the corresponding embassy issues a warning. if and or when a canadian is a victim of this crime then the canadian embassy will issue a warning.

i often fly air canada which has a pretty good sized fleet of airbuses. not too sure if i want to book any future flights with them now. airbus needs to be investigated. two crashes in one month is a sign of corner cutting. the safety of airbus should be openly questioned instead of having the media pussyfooting around the subject. the eu needs to conduct a government investigation into airbus.

@MagnusGarstin; that's a humorous post. just to be sure i'm from hamilton, ontario, but am aware of the japan's communist party's stance toward america. any one nation of the six nations can point their finger at the other one and pointedly claim why that nation doesn't want a unified korean peninsula. i've heard japanese explain why japan doesn't want a re-unified korea, which was refreshing because as we all know the japanese are not ones to criticize themselves. these comments range from economic reasons, to japan's potential if not already nuclear weapons capability (this is from the japanese corner who don't want a nuclear japan) , to they just don't want a unified korea for whatever reason. it appears that your friend is one of those all too typical, blame it on america types, as they have no answer as to why so they lazily blame it on a convenient target. one thing you might admit is that it is very entertaining the usage of north korea's language?

japan is and is not a safe society. i personally don't feel that it is any safer or more dangerous than north america. incidentally, i've never had a violent experience in north america or europe until i came to japan. seems to me that japanese have an obvious pent up aggression toward non-japanese.

@GW; "I feel the J-market is rigged for the local makers but GM Ford etc need to make something at least half decent if they want to any biz outside NAmerica."

you have the first part correct, the local j-market is rigged for the local car makers, however as of very recent we can see many north american cars being driven around the tokyo metro area. many more than in the past.

@dontpanic; oh dear is right. i'm frightened of comments like this because they show how radically out of touch the public is about the quality of cars. north american makers are building fine cars and have been doing so even better than the japanese cars. this article is about buick having better reliability than lexus.http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29771188/

and this is just one example of many clearly showing how north american cars do better than their japanese counterparts.

@Pump24; your input is duely noted, yet i would feel more comfortable flying in a Boeing 777 according to this person in this report done by the bbc. {Kieran Daly from Flight International magazine said the Boeing 777 had an almost impeccable safety record.

"The 777 is an extremely reliable aircraft," he said.

"There have been no 777 losses to date, which is a fairly impressive record considering how long it has been in service.}

compare that to the A330 which has already had some losses. in saying that they are both fine aircraft but the safer bet is with the Boeing 777.

@MagnusGarstin; "A Japanese attorney I know claims that the US is actually funding North Korea to act up so that Japan, who is growing increasingly independent of it's long-term American masters, will revert to type and start pleading "Please keep your essential armed forces on our islands Uncle Sam - you're the only country who can save us from the evil Kim Jong Il!!!" Fact or fiction"

your lawyer friend wouldn't happen to be a member of the japanese communist party now would he/she?

"A foreign friend of mine was brutally raped in her apartment one evening a few years ago, and reported it to the J-police, only to be accused of lying, and chided that "things like that dont happen in Japan.""

but, but, but how could this be surely your friend is lying. surely is was koreans or chinese, certainly not japanese. japanese people are very kind and generous who would do no such thing. remember people, wwII was not that long ago and a nation just does not change that quickly and if I may say so it looks as if j-land is headed back that way.

the japanese sure have a peculiar version of what safety is. they have to be safe from non-japanese by being aggressive toward them. hmmmm, typical japanese spin. nip it in the bud by doing the same thing you rail about. typical contradictory japanese.

@sydenham; you are right about aussies and brits, they do have the aggressive streak in them, so that part I agree on with you, yet I have to add that i've seen japanese lads having a go at each other and also having a go at some foreign nationals. it happens, but it is rarely reported because it doesn't fit the faux mold of japanese as being passive.

@smithinjapan;or should I say j-smithinjapan. you wear it on your sleave. presumably from bc? you just supported my point. the canadian government downplays the involvement in slavery in canada. to be truthful the brits had a lot to do with it yet we cannot wring our hands of it either and at the same time it bothers me to say that it was not as bad as it was in america. that's a child's way out. that's what our education teaches us.

@DeepAir65: the tokyo metro area may not be as dangerous as toronto, london, ny, paris and so on yet it is not safe like some may hope it to be. the children in japan's metro areas are at risk and the japanese need to recognize this, not pretend they live in the safest planet on earth.
