Posted in: Japan disappointed with Security Council failure to agree on Syria See in context

Surely an impartial, independent investigation of the site should take place before condemning anyone in the security council, rather than just rely on hearsay from the people who are fighting against the Syrian Government.

According to Wikipedia Imamura has 8,000 shares in Tepco so he has a vested interest in getting people to return and reducing Tepco's expenses.

The Japanese proverb 郷に入っては郷に従え means exactly the same Actually that is a Chinese proverb.

Incidentally, with all the cameras they have in the UK I am surprised that surgical masks have not become more popular.

Try being friendly, talk to them instead of threatening them all the time. When Koizumi went to N. Korea and talked, they released all the people they had kidnapped straight away.

Posted in: Which jobs will be made obsolete by driverless cars? See in context

People are saying that they won't catch on, but they are necessary in the countryside where the population is aging and the authorities have stopped providing public transport. Not everybody lives in Tokyo where you can walk to the shops/hospitals.

It were the west powers including US that invaded and colonized the rest of Asia for centuries. Japan was merely kicking them out

And who were the Japanese kicking out of Thailand? That was never colonized before Japan invaded.

They terminated our local bus service about 15 years ago. It is over 16 kilometers to the nearest shops so what are people supposed to do if they can't drive? (And don't say take a taxi because it is too expensive).

Posted in: Squat toilets’ popularity fading as parents call for them to be abolished in Japanese schools See in context

Judging by the comments here, maybe it is a good idea to have squat toilets in school as it familiarizes the students with them and overcomes any qualms they may have about using them.

U.S., Japan and Australia - three countries with no territorial interests in the area. The Permanent Court of Arbitration - an administrative organization consisting of four Europeans and one American (no Asians), that the U.S. refuses to recognize when a decision went against them.

"Critics say Japan must increase tax revenues in the face of soaring debts and to pay for the ballooning cost of welfare as the population ages." Every time they raise it they say it is to pay for welfare, but every time the money goes on something else.
