@ Aaron Lloyd Brummett If the West were serious about "peace" they would not have bankrolled the terrorists to start the war in the first place.

It was one of the largest I experienced in several years.

Posted in: Are you tired of reading or hearing about the World War II sex slave issue? See in context

Several people have referred to the 'two parties', but what about the women from the Philippines, China, Holland, Indonesia, Burma, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan, East Timor, etc.? When do they get their apologies?

Posted in: Why bureaucrats' salaries keep rising regardless of state of the economy See in context

Surely the only reason why the stock market rose in the first place was due to the government pouring in money from the pension fund.

Changing it would be as stupid as Kinki University changing its name because it made foreigners snicker.

Posted in: If you found a bag with a large sum of money in it, say 10 million yen, in some isolated spot, and there was nothing to indicate who the owner was, what would you do with it? See in context

I'd hand it in, of course, but the only problem is that the police make you sit there for about an hour answering questions, etc., and generally making themselves objectionable. I always get the impression that they are not pleased that I have given them extra work to do.

How about talking instead of threatening them all the time. Koizumi visited N. Korea and they sent back the surviving abductees soon afterwards.

Posted in: Should the statue of a girl dedicated to the memory of Korean women forced to work in Japanese military wartime brothels be removed from outside the Japanese embassy in Seoul? See in context

Rather than demand the statue's removal, Abe should go and lay some flowers on it, that would solve a lot of problems in one swoop.

Posted in: U.S. escalates involvement in Syria amid talks on Assad's future See in context

Rather than forcing Assad out, how about holding an election and hearing what the country's inhabitants think? Or does the U.S. intend to force another dictator on them?

Yesterday's Guardian said 'Vladimir Putin's visit to Japan postponed indefinitely '. Slight difference in nuance.

Posted in: Why married couples in Japan must have same surname See in context

Back in the day, when I got married it was against the law for my wife to change her surname and a man could not get a spouse visa whereas a woman could. So things have changed a little.

Here in Japan they are going to put up consumption tax but the government can afford to pay a 3 million subsidy on each new Toyota Mirai. There seems to be something very wrong somewhere.

@zurcronium 50? Why not just ban driving altogether, regardless of age? That way everybody will be safe.

"Abe says history will prove him right" Blair said exactly the same thing but it seems to have proved the opposite.

Posted in: The gun control debate: Do you support the right of citizens to own and bear firearms? See in context

Of course citizens should not own and bear firearms. In Japan where pistols are strictly forbidden and hunting firearms closely controlled the total deaths by firearms was 11 for the year 2008. For the U.S. in the same year it was 12,000.

When I came to Japan everyone used the sento and that did not open until late afternoon so I got into the habit of having a bath in the evenings. I also shower in the mornings if it has been a hot night.

While we are on the subject, I have heard that another member of the board most of her income from NHK so surely that would disqualify her too. There are very few real foreign correspondents left in the club so maybe the whole organization needs an overhaul.

As Murakami says, Japan should apologize until it is forgiven.

Posted in: Rice is a social and political force. There is nothing quite like it in the U.S. The Japanese are protecting a dinosaur, but it’s a dinosaur with a lot of clout. See in context

If rice imports are allowed it will mean the end of traditional Japanese rural scenery, so even for that reason alone, they should not be allowed.

Posted in: Japan scrambling warplanes as often as during Cold War era See in context

As Japan's East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone covers virtually all the East China Sea and overlaps with the Chinese Air Defense Identification Zone, it is hardly surprising that they have to scramble their jets everyday. It would make more sense if they were to try diplomacy and agree on Identification Zones that do not overlap.

'I thought the dairy and egg industries had nothing to do with torture but I did research and realized that there was a lot of torture in that industry' If everybody became a Vegan, cows, sheep, chickens etc., would become virtually extinct.

Posted in: Japan’s Juvenile Law says that criminal suspects aged under 20 cannot be tried as adults or have their names and photos published by media. Do you think this is too old to be considered a minor and if See in context

The question is about criminal responsibility, not adulthood. In Japan people can leave school and work at 15, girls can marry at 16 and men at 18 so if somebody is old enough to work and support a family, they surely they should be responsible for what they do. 16 sounds good to me.
