'smoking is disgusting, barbaric, blah blah blah.' please....

Rotting trash is disgusting, dog poo is disgusting. Chill out people.

In the US you're a pariah when you have a smoke, yet obesity levels are OVER 9000 over there. The oldest person in the world is usually Japanese. It's definitely not good for you, but that list is long as hell. Living kills!!!

If they ban smoking in nightclubs, it's gonna smell like sweat and Axe in there, real nice.

What normally happens to these guys once they win here in Japan. I remember a few years ago that there was a >report that it was a mixed blessing for those who win. You get the recognition, but at the same time, if you happen to be a younger person like the person the story was talking about the older researchers tend to look down and get jealous, since they think they may have somehow exceeded them out of turn, and the normal Japanese style "bullying" starts to occur. So much so that some winners are forced into obscurity.

I wouldn't go as far as claiming this is typical Japanese. There is so much jealousy and animosity between scientists anywhere in the world. You wouldn't believe how childish they can get.

congrats to Yananaka-sensei!

There is so much rumor and hear-say in this article, it hardly qualifies as news. Gotta love the foreigner approach in the media, for all the reasons stated above.

Looking at the ultra-violent M.O., Jake Adelstein says it's probably the Kanto Rengo Kai, a yakuza group that truly doesn't give a fudge about the, in theory, respectable ways of the old school yakuza.

Cults are a serious racket in Japan. There's a whole chapter on it in Shinya Kusaka’s 'Ura Hello Work', Like cults everywhere, they prey on lonely, disenfranchised individuals, and there's a whole lot of those people in Japanese big cities.

Apparently, a lot of corruption flows out of Kenya. Is it just cultural?

yeah cultural hahaha. Corruption flows from countries where people are poor as hell. Where a politician or a police officer are entrepreneurial jobs.

Posted in: Do you agree with the Japanese government's decision to order the restart of the Oi nuclear reactors? See in context

The government is smoking crack. Seriously. Nuclear power is like communism, it works great on paper, but in reality it will only lead to trouble. Last summer in Tokyo the power saving never inconvenienced me. It's time to start dismantling ALL reactors and get ready for the future with sustainable energy. If Japan takes this rigorous step, they will be on the forefront of innovation and economic boom like back in the day when the rest of the world is still messin around with coal, oil and nuclear.

The only thing you can definitely say about marijuana is that nobody who was high ever accomplished anything - at all. >That, and it promotes petty theft (never let a stoned person near the snacks aisle of the local スーパー.)

how about almost all the great pop music in human history? Beatles, Stones, Hendrix, the 'golden era' of hiphop etc. etc. etc. you don't call that an accomplishment? Oh yeah, I got my Masters degree toking every day too.

that legal herb is sketchy as hell. Don't try it. I've seen lotsa people smoke it and get totally messed up. I was offered too a couple of times, but I prefer the real thing. The irony is that if he would have smoke some real ganja, this probably would have never happened. A plant indigenous to Japan, and used for all kinds of things over centuries. Ever noticed the heritage is still all over Japan, there's a lot of names and places with the 麻 kanji 麻(P); 苧 【あさ(麻)(P); お(ok)】 (n) (1) cannabis (Cannabis sativa); hemp (plant); (2) hemp (fiber); linen; flax; jute;。But the Americans said it was bad so after WWII it was gone. Mods: sorry for the small off topic, but these are fact a lot of people don't know.

Japan has never formally or officially apologized for their sneak attack on Pearl Harbor...thats a fact.

c'mon man. They were taunted, the US wanted this to happen to get into WWII. You see Barack apologizing any time soon for killing a million Iraqis?

This apology BS has to stop. It was wartime, terrible and tragic things happen during wartime, and the winner calls the shots.

It IS from the same plant. Mary Jane is the flower of the (female) hemp plant.
