If the Vietnam were to clash with China, would they send an SOS to their ally the U.S? U.S has never helped Vietnam whenever it got the showdown with China. Vietnam should not be discriminated.

Do you even KNOW the geography of the prefecture of Okinawa?

I am not good in geography. However I have seen that map before. It is not big deal about viewing.

It was NO big deal, and anyone that thinks otherwise is just sensationalizing the event.

As for you NO big deal. For media it was not it is gold pot for 24 hours news. You should protest media for not making big deal about it.

I've been living here in Okinawa since the mid-80's so let me inform you that all you are doing is dragging up old news stories that folks here have put to sleep decades ago.

Whether you live in Okinawa from mid-80 is irrelevant with my post. I am not immigration official for you to inspect you as you are Japanese or not. I have freedom to participate in the forum. If you dislike other posters opinions, simply ignore and move on. They have their freedom to express opinion too.

If any rocket from NK actually landed in Japan NK would have been turned into an parking lot.....take the blinders off your eyes.

Have I posted NK rocket landed in Japan as you said? You may have not read single line of my post and rushing to conclude with your imagination. You may have vision or literacy problem for reading my old post of Apr. 17, 2015 - 09:22PM JST.

Imagine there is the threat near Okinawan islands of China approaching --

I guess you have never seen the map of Okinawa. Geographically, it is just the stone throw away from Taiwan. Residents do not mind about being part of Republic of Taiwan too. If it has happened, there will be the celebration with party.

you're going to scramble troops from a bunch of geographically separated areas to come to their defense in the same time frame?

Have you ever seen the NK rocket flied over Okinawa? Marines are helpless and watching the rocket over sky as star trek movie trailer. US can only use the intercepting missiles for defending Japan. Not with WWII style weapons. Bases are pretty useless for today modern warfare.

Both China and NK do not need to spend any single liter of fuel for coming to Japan coastline. They can fly their missiles like rain drops. When Okinawa has been hit by missile, you will not shed the single drop of tear.

Okinawa affair should be decided by residents. Not from the puppet of US from Tokyo.

Posted in: Battle for Okinawa: Islanders face off with Tokyo over bases See in context

Conflicts between Okinawa and Tokyo is one thing—of course it needs serious attention and the issue needs to be resolved in a peaceful manner,

You may come from another planet. Tokyo is puppet of US. In the map, Okinawa is one of the prefecture of Japan. Reality is different. Okinawa is more likely Guam, America Samoa for US frontal wall for strategic interest. Okinawa was enslaved by Japan before. Now Japan has lost control over Okinawa and it will use carrot and stick for pleasing her master. Okinawa is unofficial territory of US except in official name.

But emerging anti-Japan, anti-US groups coming from China and Korea, trying to rip Okinawa apart from Japan

Back in 1970, the world was not fully globalized. Okinawa had little interference from others such as China and Korea back then. There was a largest anti base riot back then. It was called Koza riot. Current protests are so minor comparing with that one. Therefore your theory of Korea and China were inflaming for natives anger over US and Japan is out of touch with locals.

http://www.japantimes.co.jp/community/2011/12/17/general/military-policemans-hobby-documented-1970-okinawa-rioting/#.VNKK3SwYEUU

Anti Japan sentiment came from WWII because Japan used Okinawa as butcher house. Anti US sentiment comes from US service men crimes, environmental issues and injustice of grabbing their lands. They are purely responsible over their actions for local resentment and anger.

trying to rip Okinawa apart from Japan and cause chaos cannot be overlooked, either.

FYI, Mainland Japan US bases land are mostly owned by government. Okinawa bases land were owned by private owners. Imagine someone went to hospital for medical treatment. When he come back to his house, the house was flatted by Bulldozer for base. If it is your property how would you feel. You have to understand their pain and suffering. Okinawa natives are being treated worse than animals by US or Japan. Anti US and Japan sentiment and anger are gradual long term development. It has not become overnight.

Japanese citizens who were stupid/careless enough to venture near Jihadist territory have been murdered and taken hostage before; a simple google search will tell you that.

I think you missed the other poster point. You should mention Japanese journalists instead of Japanese citizens. Back in 2007, one Japanese journalist was shot and killed by Myanmar or Burma Military Police. He knew the risk and he took the risk for fulfilling news hungry people all over world wide. Without his sacrifice, outside people will not know the real life drama during the riot back then. He was killed and his family got some compensation. Japan was not blackmailed with ransom money.

Until Abe term, Japan was not aggressive nation. Japan has lower risks for terrorists comparing with other US allies. If journalists are killed for performing their duty is nothing different from fire fighters or police men or miners. This case is different because of Abe promotion for becoming the die hard crusader for peace keeping force ( offensive force in real nature). Japan was even not a member of crusade war under Richard I according the history. Abe wants to become a member. He is more interested in his popularity instead of national interest.

when I was in the Navy, I knew enough about the place to avoid it at all costs

In fact, US bases are not only in Okinawa. Near by Philippines and Taiwan as well before. Subic and Clark air bases from Philippines have been shut down their shops back in 1990s. Life goes on for unemployed Filipinos back then. Reality is those bases were risky for Volcanic eruption and US left voluntarily. Not because of local protest and resentment. Now they are free as birds and some even prospered without US presence. Why not Okinawa can close some bases? It will be not end of the world as doom and gloom saying posters posted.

To Hawaii? Guam? Yokosuka? The Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands?

Ukraine, Poland, American Samoa or America Virgin Islands.

Get real.

When I was in Navy, I had realized that surface ships on the sea were nothing but shooting targets from subs underwater and bases from on shore.

Moreover, I doubt that the Japanese people as a whole will desire to spend billions of yen to build up their armed forces

Hosting US bases are wasting billions of yens for 70 years. That world is no longer in Saving Private Ryan era. For example, Israel Arm Forces have been reducing man power and installing more anti missiles and anti rocket system. Unlike Japan, they have more hostile terrain, flying rockets and neighbours.

Modern warfare does not need more boots and ships. More missiles and invisible computer viruses. If PRC wants, they could wipe out all the bases with missiles with a few minutes. Of course! US will retaliate it however it is too late for residents who have already been on the heaven. The base is not deterrence. It is the magnet for flying missiles for landing on Okinawa.

That will most assuredly happen if our forces leave Okinawa.

If you read every single post again, residents are not demanding all of US forces to leave from Okinawa. They only want to reduce the unbearable burden of hosting 74% of military facilities from the 0.6% land space of Japan national map for 70 years. It has been too long and time for change.

At the end, haters are not voters. Their opinions will not count in the election. It is Ryuku residents ancestor land. It is their choice for relocation of bases. The Sun will still rise and set when US troops leave from Okinawa. Beaches will be more beautiful without pollution, traffic congestion and air craft noise. Okinawa without US bases will be the paradise from bible.

@Zenpun

Thank you so much for your compliment about Okinawa history and culture. Comparing Okinawa natives with Ainu, other Aboriginal and Native Americans likes comparing mother Theresa or Pope John Paul II with blood thirsty mediaeval age warrior.

Most of the native people were illiterate, uneducated and did not wear the full clothes. For example Native Americans and Australian Aborigines did not need to be fully clothed. They did not need to stay at home. Native Americans used to travel with temporary tents. They ate the raw meat as ancient Japanese fishermen. Okinawa natives were even more educated, civilized and culturally advanced people comparing with Nara era of ancient Japan. Even now a days, many natives have better command of English comparing with mainlanders.

Native Americans cut the scalp of their enemy after his death. When Japanese warriors won the battle during the medieval time, they used to cut the head for their trophy For Ancient Ryukyuan people, those customs were too barbaric, violent and inhumane. They surrendered easily without fight when they were invaded. It is no surprise because they were passive and peaceful people.

Okinawa may be the poorest prefecture of Japan. The residents have the heart of gold and civilized manner. They have never been inferior people. They will never be too. During the post war era, Japanese work ethnic including post war generation of Okinawa were very competitive and motivated. It is no longer true! New generation Japanese have lost the motivation and strong will for good work ethnic unlike post war era. Pot and Kettle may be different in shape and size. Both are black as Mainland Japan and Okinawa.

Japan has lost decades since1990s. It may have impacted new generation Okinawa residents too. They need to be re-energized without oppression and treating them as inferior second class citizens. According Obama speech, everyone is equal under God eyes.

seriously in all honesty think that the bases will be relocated to some other area in Japan or maybe the mainland?

I am not the local of Okinawa. When I visited it, I seriously believe that bases in Okinawa are more likely holidays resorts unlike middle eastern bases. Service Men in Okinawa are more likely tourists who are having good time unlike other US bases around the globe. They are more likely holidays makers instead of battle hardened middle east based service men. Therefore some bases should be rotated to harsher than toucher location from Okinawa.

Relocation of bases command will come from Pentagon not because of local demand. Not all bases will be relocated. It will be gradual and slow process. US military has been shrinking budget and service men. Modern warfare does not need high level of man power and land spaces. Therefore it will be less bases and less service men will be very likely in the future.

In 20 years there won't be the same China that we know today.

It is true! Due to one child policy, their productive workforce will shrink. Due to massive spending on construction, China can face the housing bubble like US and Japan. Unlike US and Japan, their banks are well prepared and well saved for the financial shock. However China GDP will never get back the 10% rate of good old days.

Communism can't survive in a free market environment and a free market can't survive under a repressive Communist controlled utopia,

In the real world, there is no free market. All market has some forms of protection for competition. China sold more than they bought from the world. They protected their market. The outcome is they have high trade surplus. Market can be wild as beast if there is no control. Capital will as bird if there is no discipline according GFC. Whether communist or capitalist, ideology is not the decisive factor for prosperity.

Singapore, PRC and Middle east nations government are the business. Their sovereign wealth funds are controlled by government. Not from private sector. Due to the strict rules and regulation, their banks are strong and well balanced.

Japan has technology that China needs. China has booming market that Japan needs. However Japan population is 123 millions and keep shrinking. In term of selling goods and service, Japan is no longer important for exporters of China. Japan needs to get more babies and efficiency for the business.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Posted in: China slowdown to bruise global economy See in context

The first problem for developed countries was to start outsourcing jobs to China, you can get rich, but time after time your typical market will grow to the same levels of chinese population.

Japan population is only 130 millions. Most J household have already had the washing machine, TV, fridge and Microwave oven. If Japanese firms are just selling their goods in Japan, they will not survive for a long time. They opened factories in PRC it is not because only about the cheap production cost. They need the market for selling their goods.

It is also true for US which population is just more than 300 millions. Most American households have already owned car, computer and smart phone. US firms want to sell their goods in PRC which population is 1.3 billion. They will not survive just for depending on the US market.

If US and Japanese consumers buy their goods like PRC, they do not need to move there.

Lower ranks officers and soldiers lost moral and will to defend their homeland and they ran away too. Or is Anyone deluded about America? Presidential candidates here in America are vetted by their own party, the bureaucracies, opponent parties and media.

Absolutely correct! Al Gore has won more primary vote than George Bush. However he did not become the President of USA due to electoral college rule for allocation. Candidates of President is chosen by political party elders not from private citizens.

In my humble opinion, California and New York are densely populated. However winning higher population can not translate as free ticket for white house.

If US can have electoral college and choosing candidate from Political party nomination instead of public, there is nothing wrong for Beijing is following the US style electoral collage for screening of candidate for CEO.

Britain Westminster system is undemocratic as Beijing election because Prime minister is not elected by UK citizens directly. In fact Party elders have power to pick up or dump their leader. The party which won more votes can choose their leader regardless of electorate opinion. That leader will become Prime Minister. If Beijing voting system for HK CEO is unfair and unjust, Neither UK nor US voting system. Pot and Kettle are all men in the black suits and ties. Beijing is corrupted and authocratic.
