Posted in: Men urged to train themselves to notice household chores: study See in context

Gosh! How you find time to type?

It’s a slow day at work and hardly anyone is in. :)

But, I’m not trying to slag off my wife… She does the majority of the driving and coordinates most of the medical requirements for the children.

You do, or you believe you do?

I do… I usually do all of the laundry (washing and folding). Try to get in 2 or 3 loads after work and maybe more on the weekend. I do ask her to take her clothes upstairs, but she refuses. My oldest son does take his clothes upstairs after protesting. The baby really can’t do much.

Dishes, I’d say I’m doing them 90% of the time… I’ve got the cracked fingers from doing laundry and dishes despite moisturizing throughout the day. Becomes almost unbearable during the dry winter months… I’ve been doubling up on humidifiers in my office to help but this year is bad.

She doesn’t vacuum because she says the Dyson is too heavy, so that’s on me. As with the cleaning, she just refuses. I clean, but my children destroy within seconds of coming home… I do the rubbish, as well… sorting, organizing, compressing, picking up after, and putting out.

She used to cook a lot more often, but lately she goes out with her friends most nights or attends to concerts… So, I’ve been doing more of the cooking recently as she’s not home for dinner. When the weekend hits, I usually do the cooking and then we go to her mother’s house for dinner on Sundays.

I’m usually the one washing, moisturizing, dressing, and putting the children to bed. Same goes for waking them (and her) up in the morning for nursery/school/work. I try to get my wife involved, but she’ll mostly just lay on the couch playing on her phone while ignoring me.

After getting them all to bed, I’m still at it doing chores downstairs until around 1am… then I can unwind a little bit… hopefully sleep before 2am, and then restart the day around 5:30am. …I’m going to die young

But yes, I do the large majority of the housework… my wife even begrudgingly admits it.

I can say that I agree quite a bit with this. I do the large majority of the household chores, but I do miss things like some crumbs or perhaps an item on the floor in the kitchen. Of course, my wife lambasts me over it… which in turn aggravates me to no end because I feel like she’s completely ignoring the dozens of other things I have already cleaned or arranged. I do make an effort, but seriously, it’s like there is a hole in my vision or something.

I did make the mistake of asking her not to complain because she doesn’t do as much of the housework… and boy, did I suffer for half a year due to that.

Kind of interested in the results. Japan was like (one of?) the only country in the world where the average weight and waistline of females was smaller than that of their post-war counterparts….

Posted in: Moms seeking baby formula tire of those who say, just breastfeed See in context

It all depends… some people can’t produce enough milk, so babies can’t properly drink enough milk, and some babies can’t drink breast milk.

My son couldn’t drink properly which lead to painful experiences for my wife with excess build-up. We did a mix of breast feeding and formula… it was nice to be able to feed my son.

My daughter could drink like a champ when she came out, so she has never had any formula… this was also helpful to my wife and the issues with our son made her question her self-worth.

I guess this is just a long way of saying… all experiences are different and we shouldn’t cast blanket judgement.

Poor Kagiyama… he scored 20 more points than Zhou but his name was only mentioned once. Chen didn’t even compete and he was mentioned more. SMH

Posted in: American Erin Jackson 1st Black woman to win speedskating gold; silver for Takagi See in context

I’m confused… aside from announcing that who won the medal, local media always focuses on their national athletes especially if their are medal contenders. Of course they are going to cover Japanese athletes more than people from another country.

I was able to watch some US broadcasting, and they do the same thing… focus on US athletes on the podium regardless of medal color….

Unless someone is a legend in the sport, they won’t get much coverage in another country’s media.

Shawn White got plenty of coverage.

Anyhows, congrats to Jackson… lots of breakthrough black athletes from the US from the most recent summer & winter games!

Lawson… the one nearby is always well stocked and the family that owns it has become friendly with my family. I can also use my foreign cards on the ATM machines. I have a Family Mart that is closer, but they don’t stock items well, so most things are gone before noon… don’t even bother stopping there at night.

Also, props to Thomas G and SeicoMart…. we always hit up the ones with a “Hot Chef” station.

I thought all of the muppets were “monsters”. The cast of humans already do a great job of representing different cultures and they’ve been doing it for decades… I feel the addition of human muppets (black American family earlier in the year and now the Korean American girl) isn’t breaking any new ground.

@Droll Quarry you’re right. I had it confused with civilians; their LQA is paid for by the Department of State (and the rates are still ridiculous).

BertieWoosterToday  09:19 am JST

A friend of mine is in the US military, stationed in Okinawa. He and his wife (two people) live in a house that by American standards is huge. The rent is ¥500,000 per month. This is their housing allowance. It seems to me that if the US military needs more money, they might try saving money here and there. Okinawa is not Tokyo. The apartment we live in is plenty big enough for two (100 square metres) and the rent, with two parking spaces is ¥65,000 per month.

That’s ridiculous, but that money comes from the department of state, so it has nothing to do with the defense budget. I agree they should cut the amount of money they pay for people to live off the installation… but it won’t help the US defense budget one bit.

Think Biles has the right idea; wear what you and your team want to wear. Some people like to wear their current leotard. It’s like figure skating… you can wear a skirt or your can wear tights… shouldn’t matter.

Posted in: Osaka in Olympic spotlight, but biracial Japanese face struggles See in context

My old man is biracial, I’m biracial, my kids are tri-racial. Luckily, we haven’t experienced any racism towards my children. My son has started grade school and things have been fine, but one of his classmates from his old nursery has been bullied by one kid quite a bit (his classmate is Chinese). My daughter will start attending nursery school soon, so we’ll see how it goes for her.

I honestly think the issue of bullying is a bigger issue than racism. Even if there were no mixed-race children were around, there would still be people being aggressively bullied here. If a bully can’t find someone that has a different skin color, they’ll move on to the chubby person, or the poor person, or the awkward person, etc.

Not saying racism isn’t an issue here… but I think more often than not, it’s something other than racism at play.

Posted in: Some people (including a few Japan Today commenters) who are angry that the Tokyo Olympics have not been canceled because of the coronavirus, claim they are never again going to use the products and services of the dozens of Olympic sponsors. What do you think of such a reaction? See in context

If you have the time and can make the effort to do it, then more power to you.

I don’t... not really to concerned with what’s going on, so I doubt much will change for me. Preferred they cancel it or just push all summer Olympics back four years, but oh well.

Posted in: Tokyo Disney parks abandon 'ladies and gentlemen' announcements See in context

Went with the family both before and after the change... I didn’t notice it.

I do some announcing from time to time and I almost always start with “ladies and gentlemen”... I honestly feel like such a rube if I say something like “hey everyone”.

It is what it is, but it was always quite a rush to let out an energetic “Ladies & Gentlemen, welcome to xxx”.

I quite enjoy the theater experience in Japan. Sound and picture is still better than my home setup and they usually have luxury seating available. There’s also the 4D experience that can be fun depending on the movie. Actually going with the family to watch the Kimetsu no Yaiba movie tomorrow.
