Posted in: Noda says protests will hurt China's economy See in context

To PM Noda.... China already has what it wanted..... China has, sitting all over its east coast, factories from all the major manufacturers around the world. If this were 10 years ago... China may have listened... because then, yes, they still needed foreign investment but now they have it and the technology that came with it. Japan basically has Zero to bargain with and no power behind any punch they could throw. If Japan were to try to pull their factories from China.... the Chinese would just laugh and say.... not gonna happen. Whereas the only thing the Chinese are making in Japan are Dumplings.

Japan's power in Asia is dwindling fast..... whereas 20 years ago.... governments around Asia needed Japan's investments.... now they do not. My point.... foreign governments and courts will no longer treat the Japanese as special people.... not anymore.

Posted in: Man arrested after 2 young daughters found dead in car See in context

There are many, many problems simmering under the surface in Japan. What makes it curious is the propensity for the Japanese.... more than any other Society I know, to hide their problems. This is why, when unfortunate stories such as this do happen, it is seen to ba a desparate act. People around me, where I live, talk about their problems. Hardly a day goes by when I'm not trying to reassure and offer support to someone that has worries. It is a tough, cruel world.... and the Japanese know it quite will... maybe better than Westerners because the Japanese do not want to drag the "group" down when they feel they can no longer tread water.

On Sept 18th, 1931 there was the Mukden Incident..... might the Chinese blow up one of their own fishing vessels and claim it was fired at by a Japanese Ship. 81 years later to the day.

You might tell Japanese drivers to put their headlights on on a rainy day too. Too often I've been on a highway in a driving rain and either from behind or in front could barely see another car coming.

This is where it could get very ugly.... if any of these fishermen come to an early demise.... well I worry.

@smithjappan - your usual suspects remark... this IS a DISCUSSION Board.... if we did not voice our opinion then guess what this would be.....? So per your remark and reading between the lines I'll just say.... a sad, sad story indeed.

Posted in: Noda says China must protect Japanese citizens, companies as protests resume See in context

I hope the Japanese pull all their factories out of China and move them to the USA.... our currency is now weaker, our middle class is almost gone making wages lower, cities would give tax breaks just to get some jobs and you would not have to ship the end product that far.

Posted in: Point of view See in context

The difference between China and Japan is not how the protest.... civilized versus uncivilized. The difference is Boiling Point. The Chinese boil at around 150 degrees.... even less than alcohol..... while the Japanese have a higher boiling point... but when the Japanese do boil.... the extra heat required to get there is released with a furor. It is not about civilized / uncivilized at all.

The real test will be tomorrow.... a Monday and time for all these protesters to go back to work..... if things are quiet in China tomorrow then we may be OK but if the protests continue that will be food for thought.

In the States.... no one is up in arms about Islamists.... we know this is not some massive well constructed reaction to some idiot's movie. Just a bunch of out of work bad boys with little else to do. Even when 911 happened we didn't protest.... protesting is like throwing a fake punch.... in America... you don't fake a punch.... the consequences can be painful. We either do nothing or you will soon know otherwise.

I think film makers need to continue to make such movies as much as possible. The only way to show Muslims how futile it is to censor all media is to hit them with a contstant barrage of video. Either it will cause war or they'll have to give up trying to kill every Tom, Dick, or Harry that printed or filmed something.

This is one of the saddest stories I've read in awhile.... but I shutter to think about how the press would have handled this if the Father was not Japanese but married to a Japanese women. I could be totally wrong but it seems that anytime a Gaijin commits a major crime it seems to be pasted everywhere. Either way.... only a 12 year sentence for a slow torturous death to a child of that age does not fit the crime period.

I doubt very much that China or Taiwan will bring this to the ICJ... not because they think they'll lose but why would anybody let a court decide something when they 100% feel it is theirs in the first place. When you're dealing with deeds and titles within one country's borders, yes, a court would work but there are no deeds or titles to this land that China, Taiwan, or Japan would recognize other than one's produced in their own countries. This will come down to either dividing up the mineral rights around the Islands or military action. If I were one of the 3 countries I'd quickly put a massive military prescence on and around the disputed islands and dare the rest to take them back. Possession is 9 tenths of the law, at least that is what I've heard.

Pioneer tried to charge me Y50,000 to have my CarNavi's map updated. I had no idea it would cost that much to update the data and I had already sent them the Hard Disc Drive.... they would not send me the HDD back until I paid. I told them to revert my HDD to the old data and send it.... even then they initially refused until I told them that I have consulted a lawyer and he told me that they are in possession of my actual property and refusal to send it back is against the law. So after arguing with them for about a week they finally sent it back. So much for great Japanese service. I paid around Y280,000 for the CarNavi, so I at least expected map updates to be less expensive.

Posted in: Police launch 'Stop Train Violence' campaign See in context

I was on an almost empty train one Sunday evening.... maybe just 3 or 4 people riding the car I was on. About 7 meters up the car and sitting on the other side was a pretty, young Japanese woman listening to here music with headphones on and no one in here immediate vicinity. The train stops and in walks a middle aged, angly, Japanese guy with a newspaper. He ambled over her way to sit right next to her and opened his newspaper to the point where it covered both her and him. That ticked me off.... I felt bad for her but I could not believe he had the balls to do something like that and not expect me to take action. I was insulted. I immediately walked over, stood right in front of him, and told him to take a hike or else. He quickly got up and headed to the next car. She thanked me and I went back to where I was sitting. It is not just violence.... there are weirdos everywhere too.

Lets see.... we've been overpaying TEPCO for decades.... i.e. my elec bill in Tokyo was twice that of my bill in the States and I consumed less energy to boot. Now... after decades of decadence and a major disaster... TEPCO is complaining they need more money to develop Renewables.... heck.... who the heck wants them to do the developing for us in the first place! Let TEPCO die a slow death and lets try to find a company we can trust.

Posted in: Tens of thousands protest against Osprey deployment See in context

It is true... as much as many of you newcomers cannot believe it... mainland Japanese consider Okinawan's to be second class citizens. And before you go out and say that is just plain dumb... which I agree it does sound that way... just hang around a few Tokyoites when they're drunk and casually bring up Okinawa. Don't try to go out and do a poll when they're sober... the crew from Tokyo are too well programmed to tell you what they really think in that type of situation.

Another example of some poor, unsuspecting kid being screwed by authorities in Bali. I've heard of cases where the cops and the drug dealers were working together to extort as much money as they can from tourists. Bali is a filthy place to begin with... everything is falling apart there. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else.
