I spend a few months contacting companies offering to represent their products overseas and most came back with lines like:

Sorry, we're not interested in selling our products overseas..... We're too busy to think about that.... Sorry, nobody speaks English, so we can't handle orders.. We want so succeed in Japan first and then consider what to do.... It's too complicated....sorry....

About 60% of the companies we contacted didn't even bother to reply... Good luck....

Someone explain this to me: If you know a typhoon is coming, why not put yourself out of danger by looking for shelter?

I bet 100,000 yen half the dead and missing were doing something they shouldn't have been doing during a typhoon...That reminds me of a guy in my area who decided to fix his TV antenna during a typhoon, fell off the ladder, hit his head and died. Heaven wants martyrs, not idiots.

Why is it that these guys rarely fight overseas??? I'm not a boxing fan (and think these guys, especially the Kamedas, are a bunch of thugs), but I've heard in the grapevine that some of the boxers coming from developing countries are flown in 1 or 2 days before the fight....I guess it is easier to beat an opponent on home turf and when they are jet lagged, tired and overwhelmed by the sights.... just a thought.......

They are just looking to extend their power to every aspect of their lives...including their sex lives...I read somewhere than men who are promoted and starting to do well professionally are more likely to cheat on the spouses / partners, sleep around or engage in risky behaviors....ego trip plus affluence....bad combination....

Posted in: What are you doing in your daily life to conserve electricity? See in context

I was raised in a developing country by an illiterate mother who struggled to make ends meet every month, so saving water, electricity....saving on everything and living frugally was a way of life. I'm more than happy to help in the effort and have always done it by unplugging all appliances that are not in use, having candle light dinners (very cool), etc.. I'm considering making a little windmill and installing it to generate power and recharge a small battery to charge my mobile and ketai, but I charge them through my laptop anyway...

To me, monarchies are a farce. I am only happy that a. Britons had a reason to celebrate given austerity measures and economic hardship b. As a nation or group of nations, probably economically benefit from the coverage, and that, c. Two young people, seemingly very down to earth, followed tradition for the sake of the people and probably would have kept everything simple if they were commoners.

I hate to be the stick in the mud, but I'm 110% against all that monarchy crap!! It just puzzles me that some countries that pride themselves in being democratic and free, still support a system specifically meant to oppress and exploit others.

The only good thing I have to say is that William and Kate try behave like normal people and, at least, use the notoriety for good causes.

Totally agree with Mittsu above. The chickens who ran scared and jumped ship are now coming back and asking for forgiveness while local staff had to do their job and bite the bullet while they were away.

Posted in: Why did those foreigners who decided to leave Japan in the aftermath of the March 11 disaster come in for so much derision from some people who labeled them with words like 'flyjin?' See in context

To each his own..it just appalls me that some 'flyjin' actually lied about their reason to leave, 2 people in my company and some I've read about made excuses about relatives having sudden surgeries or falling ill....ridiculous...why not be professional and say they were going home due to the situation here?? Both 'flyjin' did not respond to calls and emails and just called from the airport to say they were going home...and then came back expecting to receive the royal treatment...

Posted in: What would you say are the main differences between the way the Japanese and foreign media are covering the aftermath of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami and the ongoing nuclear crisis? See in context

I decided not to watch CNN any more due to their gross over-generalizations and Hollywood type reporting like: "The whole of Japan is leveled to the ground..." The Japanese police don't seem to know what they're doing; they're just going around poking into the rubble with a stick..." or "We've all over Japan this week..." Really? I didn't see any reports from Okinawa, Hokkaido or Nagoya? Sendai, Fukushima, Iwate and Tokyo are all of Japan?...Maybe in the eyes of an ignorant American...and they keep comparing Japan to Haiti...the only similarity is that the earth shook under people's feet, that's all. Other than that the situations could not be more different. Screw CNN, I'm changing cable providers...

A friend of mine was eating alone at an Italian restaurant in Tokyo. He started flirting with another costumer and, after a few smiles and winks, he waved for her to join him at his table. She did and they ordered some wine....then the waiter came over and said they could not serve them as it was obvious they weren't together!! Two consenting adults decide to sit together and share a drink and the waiter spoils the fun! They were kicked out and decided to take their business somewhere else.

I can understand when the eatery staff stop persistent harassers, but why on earth would the Strbks employee agree to step outside with the offending costumer? It's obvious the staff don't know how to deal with these people.

I'd give them 2 years top: In 4-6 months the buzz will wear off, 6-9 she'll realize he isn't that funny; he'll realize she's dumber than he thought, 9-12 they avoid each and keep the show rolling for the cameras, 13-16 they go their own way and just share an address and keep avoiding the press, 16-20, the house of card crumbles and the media circus starts, 20-24 separation and divorce...

Posted in: What do you think about the custom in Japan of women giving chocolates to their male co-workers on Valentine’s Day as a form of “obligation,” and then receiving chocolates back from the men on White D See in context

It's stupid. I think all businesses would probably benefit from positioning VD as a day of love, appreciation and friendship like it's done in other countries. Where I'm from VD is on the biggest revenue generating days, probably 2nd or 3rd to Xmas. having to give chocolate to members of the opposite sex is just lame. I make it a point of telling my staff not to waste their money on chocolate and organize a VD lunch/dinner for everybody instead.
