Posted in: In the future, what should the government do about Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO)? How do you think that company should be run? See in context

It should encourage reduced usage of power considerably in Japan. What we've seen through the Tokyo rolling blackouts is that we use WAY TOO MANY LIGHTS. We could do with using less energy, period.

@Foxie, how do they do that exactly? What's the science behind them?

Tone down the light usage EVERYWHERE... as the past week has shown, Tokyo uses way too much electricity and we can manage with less. Start with those drug stores...

It's not that they can't vote, just not YET. So... darn it, if you love your country and community so much and WANT to have your vote count, then say, then pledge allegiance to the country/community in which you be a part of and get naturalized when eligible.

@Trenton, my JAPANESE employer said it was unacceptable to change hair color, add highlights, etc., while employed. Such "hair modification" was for the younger generation who had not yet entered the mainstream work-force, not for this company's employee. Does it matter? Yes, it does. OK in western society or not, when in Rome, do as the Romans do.

It's just marketing. Make a few bucks while you can, esp. since the prior first lady did it and who can top THAT!

Posted in: Do you think it is a good idea to have armed guards on planes as an anti-terrorism measure? See in context

Terrorists are willing to die. Having an armed guard is not going to deter that fact. It just heightens the possibility that something awful will happen.

What may deter such incidents may be the fast-acting passengers and flight crew. Perhaps we should have "how to subdue terrorists" on the printed card in the seat pockets.

As for that Christmas incident... if the FATHER of the terrorist CALLS you (US Embassy) and tells you there is DANGER... DON'T (TSA) let the kid board for goodness sake. Revoke the visa. What are these people doing??????

Posted in: Saitama woman arrested for fatally abusing 3-year-old son See in context

according to a different website, this mother has 3 other children. this 3 year-old boy was her second child so there are 2 younger ones... i wonder if the reason why she did this was just because of the diaper problems.. she was probably stressed out with taking care of all her 4 small children...

@fishy If this woman does have three other children, they all need therapy now. Imagine growing up knowing your mother killed your brother 'cuz she threw a temper tantrum over a "nappie". Talk about walk on egg shells until you're moved out of the home.

(Is it just me, or is this the first time I've read "nappies" used in a news report.)

If he's done this before, not once but 50 times, something is clearly wrong with the kid, the parents, and the system that is obviously not helping him.

Posted in: Woman arrested for selling 1-yr-old daughter to man for obscene acts See in context

Some additional information from Sankei, not yet mentioned here: The man paid the woman 20,000 yen (about $230). He had pornographic photos of other girls, too. He is unemployed. The Sankei article says it happened in July, not October. http://sankei.jp.msn.com/affairs/crime/091130/crm0911302046027-n1.htm

@ippanjin33 I'm confused. Same person and situation? Wrong info? What else is factually incorrect or missing? Great reporting.

Posted in: What's your stance on abortion? See in context

I believe it's important to uphold the sanctity of human life, which I believe begins at conception when the miracle of a sperm and an egg fuse to create a new human being. Second, I recognize that our free will to choose is also a precious and sacred responsibility. But as we all know, we cannot always exercise choice whenever we want, anytime we want. It has its limitations and boundaries. I think it's important to prioritize our values and uphold the sanctity of human life as primary above all else. If we lose that, then we've lost our humanity when we kill the most innocent of our species for whatever reason, selfish or not. (The operative word here is "innocent".) I also didn't say it was the easy road to take. I think upholding this value is very difficult but necessary.

Posted in: Japanese-built train makes debut on British rail lines See in context

I think that California can make a high-speed line that use the 200 mph E5 Series Shinkansen for conect San Francisco with LA in 2 hours and LA with San Diego in 40 minutes, even with bad weather and without the hassle of the airport security.

I'm sorry, with what MONEY might California even try doing this? :-P

The religious backlash was just a publicity stunt. They need some sort of controversy to prep their talk about the film (the cast/crew are obviously making the rounds).

Posted in: Why do Asian pop stars have a hard time succeeding in the U.S. market? See in context

Possibly the same reason why foreign movies have a rough going in States. Moreover, American culture is American culture. If it decides to let one or two hits in, then so be it. But the "norm" is that American culture is exported... not the other way around.
