For the meantime children in that area will need to be accompanied to school by adults. This will have all sorts of positive consequences that go beyond protecting against this particular man.

Neighbors should be urged to report any suspicious behavior by anyone fitting that profile. Police should temporarily turn their attention away from proper bicycle registration and catch this criminal.

Incredible presence of mind to react as the child did.

This is a news story because it is an unusual occurrence involving danger to a child. It is not representative of everyday life, not common, not typical and not something to cause people to curse, stereotype or criticize.

Let's continue to be diligent in our own lives and support that same diligence and care in others.

It wasn't attempted extortion it was harassment. Ryunosuke kun would need a reasonable plan and a viable victim to raise himself to the level of an extortionist.

Based on the two incidents it is clear he needs jail time and counseling. Any chance of at least having him 86'd from that particular bookstore?

If clerks are asked to hit robbers with chairs there would need to be a comprehensive bound training manual, expensive chair hitting seminars, designated chairs for hitting, gloves designed for handling the "hitingu chair" etc.

If they are not taught (programmed) correctly they simply won't know what to do. How would they?

Hey D. Morris, What do drugs have to do with anything? He didn't ask to be a role model and didn't read your book on how other people should live their lives.

People loved him not for his private life but for his music and ability to entertain. But you knew that didn't you.

There needs to be public service announcements or something like it to warn parents about what appear to obvious (to the rest of us) risks to the welfare of children. As a teacher and parent I see other parents ignoring obvious danger regularly.

Those that idolize Japan will claim there is no problem or no more of a problem than in other countries. It IS a major problem and comparisons are immaterial.

Amazing that the police allowed him to strike the woman again in the police station. The fact that they admit to having allowed this to occur is also amazing. Maybe the police should call the police in this country.

I'll bet this old women got a basket of flowers/fruit/laundry detergent and a teary apology from the 21 year old's mother. I'll also bet that the only person that is truly sorry is this poor woman for opening her mouth.

"It is not standard practice to handcuff anyone and everyone who walks into the koban." ---- we are talking about someone who just assaulted a 50 year old woman and broke her jaw!
