When people say there is too much violence on TV, the other side says, "censor yourself if you don't like it." SezWho says, "no, you should watch it even if you don't like it."

Why should anyone listen to Ahmadinejad's drivel if he doesn't want to. Self-censorship shows self-restraint at its highest level. This is the same reason why I think Nazis are garbage and Mother Teresa was a saint (small 's' even though I'm not Catholic). I'd walk out of a movie if I thought it sucked. Why should I watch the credits rolling when I disliked it from the beginning?!

A politician should know the protocols of being on the world stage. U.N. Sec-Gen Ban shouldn't have to warn Ahmadinejad. Brinksmanship should not be in the equation during an international forum – he is after all using fighting words.

Inflammatory remarks that he knows will stir the crowd? Come on. He's gotta be stupid forgetful how the world is tired of his same speeches. You tell the same joke too often and no one will laugh, let alone invite you to the next party. Well, he said the same old rhetoric too many times and people rolled their eyes and walked out. It won't be long before he falls out of favour in Iran... and find him back selling kabobs in Tehran.

Listening costs nothing... but you also learn nothing in this case!

Posted in: French seize pirate ship as threats mount on U.S. ships See in context

Unfortunately hiking up insurance to include military escorts would mean everybody paying through their nose for cheap overseas-made consumer products. The insurers would be profiling countries/companies, underwriting... prices go up and then there's unfair trading practices... which would benefit home-based manufacturing (which is not a bad thing). In terms of economics... it's all messed up, so leave well enough alone.

International militaries need to form a cellular network (like a grid) to be able to cover such a large area. This may mean a considerable number of ships that track the pirates as well as each other and legitimate commercial vessels. Have each military ship tag these pirates as soon as they see them surface as being suspicious. Think of it as Interpol on the high seas. Who would pay? The countries that do the most trading. Wouldn't it be of the utmost importance in national security to defend their own ships by paying into the network?

This is no wonder the kids in Japan don't respect teachers and other authority figures. Ever since the Japanese found out the emperor wasn't a god, they went on a downward spiral.

The 11 should be harshly reprimanded. Totally not funny to add even harmless additives to anybody's food. Knowing that they even touched the food that the teacher consumed is inexcusable.

The dumb kids thought it was funny that they "help" abort the unborn child. Wow! These are the same kids sniffing panties in Akihabara in a few years.

Japan! Have balls and reform your kids! Isn't there a sinking island you can dump social rejects?

If only he had a guy dressed as a peach and a guy dressed as a mango to back him up - could have given those punks a decent punch-up.

Those would be the Fruit-Of-The-Loom guys... and I never heard of them getting beat up.

I remember I was dressed up as a chicken and I got plucked. Next year I was dressed as a giant corn and got shucked. But man, dressed up as a pineapple in Sweden for a music video? He got royally... juiced.

It's time for Japan to become a mighty force capable of defending itself.

No country in Asia wants to see Japan, militarily, as a "mighty force." Japan had effectively alienated itself in Asia at the turn of the last century because of it.

Heck, let's all just proliferate arms and blow each other out of the water.

LostinNagoya,

rooting for North Korea. Hope that being in such an important event will help citizens to realize there´s a whole new world. I still feel sad when I remember the images of all those little children starving to death in community centers that NG showed sometime ago.

What will NK winning do anything for the starving children. It just says, "we beat up the capitalists and NK is superior." There will be no less starving children or people poo-kicked into worshipping Kim Jung-Il.

Most of you may not know that during the annexation of Korea by Japan, the north suffered much more at the hands of the Japanese Imperial Army. The southern kingdoms of Korea (Paekche & Kaya) historically have had alliances with Japan during the Three Kingdoms period of Korean history. NK has an innate hatred for Japan and the west.

South Korea has problems with Japan because Japan has still not fully accepted blame for the invasions in asia and the participation of WWII – Japan still believes it was trying to help unite Asia (with weapons and killing). It's no wonder that NK wants to pull Japan into a crisis situation. The only allies Japan would have in a war situation is the US and Europe. South Korea still sees the north as it's own people, albeit, run by a crazy tyrant. The South would be in a predicament if war started – brothers killing brothers, again.

Hope for an assassination from within NK... this will solve a huge problem for S.Korea, Japan, China & the west. It would take another 30 to 50 years for normalization before re-unification could begin. Remember the two Germanies during re-unification? Maybe re-unification of the two Koreas is not such a great idea, especially for Japan since the united Korea would have the LARGEST army in the world in numbers! Karma? I hope not.

However, Japan & South Korea need to keep one eye open during this missile launch... for sure if NK launches its rockets, there will be debris in their territories for sure.

saborichan,

... I think a Japanese living in America already made his own companion robot that can do various things. He has also mentioned it is 'anatomically correct', but that's not what he uses her for...

Actually, I believe the robot inventor is Vietnamese Canadian. He called the robot Aiko. Japanese name but the Ai probably stands for artificial intelligence. Great name... why didn't the Japanese think of that?

sabiwabi,

I said

however, the police were Hamas officials, making them combatants in their own right.

You said,

I guess that also includes firemen, medical staff, or any other civil officer. Now I know why some estimates of civilian casualties are so low. I don't think police officers or traffic officers are launching rockets, why specifically target them?

I wouldn't include "firemen, medical staff, or any other civil officer." Those are your words and not mine. I specifically mentioned the police because they are armed and are working Hamas members. The firemen, medics, etc. I don't believe are armed, therefore should not be used in your argument... unless you know something different.

Posted in: Israel threatens retaliation for Gaza rocket fire See in context

Sabiwabi,

Hamas is responsible to some extent, but you also have to realize that Israel has specifically targeted police stations and other security related facilities during their recent carnage. A large number of police were among the casualties. This makes it more difficult to keep things under control.

I realize that the police were targeted and it makes it difficult to control other militant groups, however, the police were Hamas officials, making them combatants in their own right. Leading by example is always the best way, but in the case of the Gaza the leaders failed miserably; the restraint and leadership on the West Bank is to be commended.

Posted in: Israel threatens retaliation for Gaza rocket fire See in context

Hamas controls Gaza, therefore they are the authority, are they not? If they "can't" control the "smaller militant groups" then Hamas should be responsible for that. It seems that some people here are willing to go to great lengths to disregard this reality. If Hamas allow these smaller militant groups (as if Hamas isn't militant) to fire rockets into Isreal again, they can't just give a shoulder shrug and say, "sorry we didn't do it." This is too simple an excuse for any sympathizer.

JackBerstein: sorry bushlover, but what Amnesty International has documented is definitley considered using human shields. Israel has done it for many years, look it up. You won't see it on the usual news channel, so you'll have to look a bit harder.

"Amnesty International said on Wednesday that both Israeli soldiers and Palestinian fighters are endangering the lives of Palestinian civilians – including by using them as human shields."

I believe you can see that both Israeli soldiers & Palestinian fighters are named. Let's not make this another one sided event. Partial truths are just a flat out lie.

Indiscriminate use of arsenal is more dangerous than a deliberate and targeted attack. Lack of brains would mean... shooting rockets from a kindergarten rooftop against the wind.

Anyway, I thought all that the Hamas "soldiers" had to do was light the fuse, scrunch their eyes and plug their ears... and hope the rocket launched.

Posted in: Israel declares unilateral Gaza cease-fire See in context

We don't know how much Israel has "achieved" due to the fact that we aren't privy to their original plans and actions, but I think from the reports they have made a dent.

Hamas may have all their leaders outside its borders, so there is probably a chicken running around with its head cut off for awhile. You don't need brainers to shoot rockets.

likeitis,

honestly, I'm sorry about your posts. I did have a chance to read some of them before they were deleted. I felt the same way a few days ago. Aside from obviously being at polar ends of the debates I think accepting that we are learning from all the posters says something. At least I can admit it.

Anyway...

Anything that will fit through a tunnel goes through. But don't you find it odd that we speak of tunnels so matter of factly? Why should there be any need?

Don't you think that tunnels are a clandestine way to move "things" or "people?" We know not all tunnels are made for food and medicine.

Its funny, because last I heard Israel had near total control over Gaza and has since 1967. How anyone else could be using the Palestinians of Gaza is beyond me. Do they have some sort of inter-dimensional porthole???

The other Islamic states or terrorist groups (Iran, Hezbollah, etc.) just say, "go ahead brother, attack Israel and we'll support your cause with money and weapons." The Taliban had the same support from the Saudi's, which later withdrew their support. If you make a small man believe that he is invincible, he may die not knowing his fight was fruitless... and lacking 8 virgins, or whatever, in Heaven.

likeitis,

All I said was, "Arab political parties do exist" in Israel.

You said: Political parties are nothing until they get representation the government Jack. How many seats do they have in the Knesset? How many PMs have they had? Presidents? Cabinet members? Place that number next to the number that filled those spots that were from Jewish political parties.

You're getting all defensive, but I beg to differ. Some political parties are formed, never to be elected, however, they influence the voters and other elected governments. If you get elected and do an awful job, then you're out!! If you influence other parties so they adopt your view, then you're going to last, even though you still don't get great representation.

I know the Green Parties around the world aren't getting many seats either, but you hope... Let's just not pretend Arabs have never had any representation in the Knesset. Please don't argue the numbers... it's about achievement.
