I know this is old but only noticed it today.

What does the motive matter?

It matters to learn from mistakes made to help prevent such occurrences from happening in the future.

There is no reason to stab someone because of an argument or any other reason, except self defense

Verbal assault is still assault but not treated as such here in Japan. Some could argue that that was self defense against verbal abuse.

@Olive

after the girl and boy started arguing

Not victim blaming..

Isn't it time to start testing the 3 ABMD japan has out yet? I am sure with all the testing Russia has done against the missile defense systems in Ukraine there isn't any new info NK could get from having their missiles expunged. Might also be good practice for Japanese coast guard and make sure it works, also they could use up some of the older ordinance before they go bad...

prosecution is difficult as it requires proof of a specific instruction to an accountant to not report the money transfer.

Of course they wouldn't have been doing it if they thought they could be prosecuted...

What do you expect 70 years running the country writing the laws another fine example is the three year Statute of limitations on bribery.

Posted in: 14-year-old girl arrested after slashing classmate with knife See in context

The most burning question is motive. Which is entirely missing. What did the boy do or say to incite such an act of violence?

Probably the same thing all boys that age say... something stupid and inappropriate.

The real question is how long has it been going on and has she just been standing on it or has she voiced it out and just been ignored. Japan schools really needs to adopt a no bulling policy and start suspending students who do it.

The Liberal Democratic Party faction, formerly led by slain Prime Minister Shinzo Abe

And don't forget Kishida was also led that same faction. Wonder why they omitted his name maybe looking to scapegoat Abe ???

Sorry Jay but you are incorrect.

Aside from tiny smatterings of it in Europe, American football never had been and never will be a sport taken seriously outside of the US

As of September 2023 there are 74 participating countries of the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) which is way more than a tiny smattering. Which is more than a third of the 195 countries in the world today

Posted in: Japan to allow criminal checks beyond 10 years for jobs involving children See in context

Why reverse something that benefits most people who have done dumb stuff when they were young?

They should just create a sex offenders registry where all sex offenders are put on it that way it will target the particular type of people that we don't want looking after kids.

The creation of a sex offenders register in Japan is long overdue

Yes it is long overdue and this proposal is not a sex registry and is not limited to sex crimes only.

I have stayed in both ryokan and hotels throughout Japan. I have stopped going to both if I can help it. I occasionally use a hotel, but I am over going to ryokan (cant stand the dust and bad smelling futons).

I have found there are camp grounds in all prefectures and I prefer the freedom they provide and the low prices and the extra money to spend on ourselves going places and eating out.

Posted in: What do you think about the use of AI to create the "last" Beatles song, "Now and Then?" What if AI were used to create new songs or movies featuring deceased artists? See in context

if AI were used to create new songs or movies featuring deceased artists

I think it completely depends on how it is marketed. If the producers etc are trying to flog of work that sounds like a particular artist and charge like it was an original when it's just a counterfeit. I think they would have to be upfront about its origins and prices should reflect that as well.

How did he obtain that weapon, it is said that Japan is a safe country with very difficult to get a weapon.

Not if you know the right people.

so he burnt his house and belongings.. no intention to return home. Shoots two people at a hospital where they can get immediate medical help and probably not die. then hold some people hostage for the day and slowly let them go.

To me it sounds like a state funded retirement plan lots of crimes enough to get him at least 10 + years which at 86 is probably all he is going to need. Seems to be pretty well planned out.

I am curious what does the article want to point out? Ignorance is causing the increase antimicrobial resistance?

My partner currently has a cold, so when I asked her she what she was taking for her cold she replied "antibiotics" however after checking what she was actually taking it was an antiviral medication.

I'm pretty sure you would find 100% of that 60% don't actually know what they are taking when they have a cold and just think that the Dr has given them an antibiotic when they haven't just like my wife.

simply put Kishida is out of ideas to increase his low popularity, he is hopping a tax cut will help even if it isn't a substantial break at all it's the word itself "tax cut".

What an ineffective leader this miserable excuse for a politician is.

He has a multiple of actions he could take such as increasing the minimum wage and removing GST on food.

But that's not going to happen...

He is just stuck sticking with his urgenomics plan

Posted in: Transport ministry to penalize used car dealer Bigmotor over fraud See in context

@Lindsay

Things like, ¥120,000 to change the front brake pads on a K-car. ¥90,000 to replace a taillight. $60,000 to do an oil and filter change. I was livid for being blatantly ripped off but my ex just told me to stay out of it and paid whatever ridiculous amounts they asked.

My wife was the same. So I told her fine and I take the money then use rakuten to buy the parts online at often times less than half the price. I have them delivered to my office so she has no chance to see them arrive. Then I install them then take the car to the dealer tell them I had already replaced what was needed but I let them change the oil since it comes free with the car every year.

What she doesn't know doesn't hurt her. And I get to enjoy the extra cash in my pocket.

And that's where we, yet again, enter conspiracy theory terrain: TEPCO is giving out manipulated samples, is that what you are saying? Do you really think they are that stupid?

You would hope not. but it's not like they haven't done it before.

the operator of the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant has been caught out blatantly misleading investigators appointed by the Japanese parliament to probe the meltdowns. An audio recording heard by AM reveals that a TEPCO official gave false testimony in an apparent bid to stop an investigation being carried out inside the shattered Reactor One building.
