Watts - from recovering drug addict to recovering anorexic. Director - from Hitler to Diana.

movie about the late royal’s final two years,

The filmmakers did not confirm whether the biopic will feature Diana’s relationship with Dodi Fayed,

er,one without the other? That should be interesting. Or not...

I'm voting for sushisake3 for Prez and tkoind2 for Veep. Far more sense that the candidates. Oh wait, I'm not American or Christian, guess I'm not eligible.

Santorum doesn't want welfare programs to support children, but he does want to bring seriously disabled children into the world?

-yes, his youngest child is seriously disabled but as he and the Mrs don't practice what they don't preach, she got pregnant in her 40s and they have a child who does not have a great life or a great life expectancy.

This is on top of his raising a family of seven children, saving for their college education and with one daughter who is a special needs child. Charity really does begin at home after all.

so does contraception, see above point. And going back to stewardship of the earth, the planet can hardly support us having 1 or 2 kids each, never mind seven. Totally irresponsible.

Posted in: What do foreigners find strange about Japan? NTV finds out See in context

Yawn, this old chestnut... wasn't there a show a few years ago called something like "Kore wa hen daiyou, Nippon!" ? Bunch of foreigners, always including one African in tribal gear, moaning away & making it look like we're laughing at, not with, Japan. I was in one in the early 90s -god help me if there's still a copy floating around- but at least they asked us what we liked, too. They've probably been making these shows since those pesky gaijin invented TV.

Local residents are concerned about the danger of falling bits of ice, some of which have landed within a 400-meter radius of Tokyo Sky Tree.

Leave the damned whales alone. Japan, go back home and start investing in whale watching.

There is whale watching in Japan I think...

Yes, one notable case is the very brave Mr Izum iIshii in Futo, Izu. He's a former whaler who realized that live whales are worth more than dead ones (you can only eat a dead one once) & had a career change. He could use some support, if you're ever down that way.

Just because she sold a bunch of records doesnt mean she had one of the greatest voices ever. What a load of crap.

Quite- why is the writer expressing an opinion in an otherwise factual piece? Just another dead junkie, as many have said. And 48 is hardly young in the music biz- doesn't put her in the Hendrix/Joplin/Bolan or even Winehouse category. How many 48 year olds round the world died of Aids, malnutrition, cholera etc today? No one's crying for them. Get some perspective - and a conspiracy theory. Gonna listen to me some Billie Holiday now (dead at 44).

If she was a cabin attendant she must have a nice personality.

huh?? Need a nice personality to be able to say "飲み物いいかがですか?” - the cynic in me agrees with ebisen, but the woman probably had post natal depression, got no help & gave up. If she didn't want to give up her jet setting life, she should have had a termination- a lot easier than finding an adoptive home in Japan, I'm sorry to say. What a mess. Wonder what granny said...

and mods, do we have to put up with language like "tw*t"??

OK, that's weird, I logged in to comment & it reloaded the story, and the quote I was going to comment on has gone! It's pretty mind blowing that Madge (Thank you, Dame Edna!) has been reigning longer than her dad was alive.

Yet the other day we had a story about how the care workers from overseas will get kicked out if they fail the exam, inc. an advance kanji test. Is it really better to leave care to inexperienced, exhausted family family members than someone who's deemed unsuitable because their kanji is only intermediate level?

@ SquidBert - yes, I think the story is obasuteyama...leaving granny on the mountains!

Quite - I was half asleep the other night when they were doing the warnings on NHK & I swear they gave out footwear advice! Something about being "suberiyasui" . Deja vu all over again....

Sounds like Cameron's spoiling for a fight; just like Thatcher, he wants to distract the British public from his government's incompetence and screw-the-poor policies by engaging in a nice little war: just a few thousand young men drowned, shot or burnt to death. A price well worth paying to keep the Tories in power and the populace on side. Evil, evil people.

Absolutely, well said. Let's hope we've learned from last time & don't support these war mongers.

Great comments here, thumbs up to everyone. I liked that he didn't change his story, he just had selective memory loss. I remember in the late 80s there was a run of safes full of cash being found in bamboo groves - I guess it's not unusual to keep cash around, just dump it when things get hot. So, that's 40,000 ichi-man-yen notes - should fit in the back of the futon cubby!

Also, what I don't get about the primaries is how they all slag off members of the same party, then when one of them gets the nomination, they all love him again. Huh??

Thanks to the mathematicians out there- looking at the daily total, or even worse the cumulative number, really brings it home. Our boss went under a train in 1991 - a happy drunk, reportedly staggering over the platform. But the company claimed he jumped because he'd been cooking the books- always wondered if they got out of some payment to his family with that one.

Impressed by everyone sharing experiences here - Captcanuck, what a dreadful story. I hope the guy rots in hell.

Posted in: Whale's body found in Tokyo Bay See in context

Officials were unable to say how the whale’s carcass got into Tokyo Bay.

Swam pre-death or washed in on the tide post-mortem would be reasonable guesses. So are they just leaving it there to rot? In most countries, researchers would be all over it, great opportunity. But I guess they're all busy in the southern oceans.

As for the quake warning theory- NZ gets tons of cetacean strandings, far more than they ever get quakes, and New England gets a fair few and they're not really in a quake zone at all.

Posted in: Unemployment benefits won't be extended to those who lost jobs due to March 11 disaster See in context

People will have to move to where the jobs are, which should help get some people out of these disaster prone areas. Plus the government will have to spend a considerable sum on the reconstruction effort, that will put further strains on public coffers.

Ah, problem solved! Everyone leave town, or what's left of it, to places with tons of jobs (must be lots of those) - then you won't need to rebuild, because there'll be no one left, just a bunch of old folk who haven't got long to go anyway. Hurrah!

Posted in: Meryl Streep denies Thatcher biopic disrespectful See in context

Sigh... this forum, like those on many of the web sites of UK newspapers, is bound to end up with some political mud slinging and very little said about the movie. I could start it by completely disagreeing with everything pamelot says & saying that Thatcher deserves no respect at all - but I won't.

If you want a movie about what Thatcher did to the UK, watch "Brassed Off", if you can find it. Pete Postlethwaite alone will make it worth the effort. Can't say what you'll get if you see La Streep, as I haven't seen it & don't plan to. I would much prefer all memories of the Thatcher years to be as dead and buried as she herself soon will be. OK, I need to go lie down in a dark room now.
