Not that being a cannibal seems to bother Japanese authorities. This dude killed and ate a Dutch woman and is now living in public housing in Japan.

His dad was Bulgarian, and his mom was Ukrainian. She divorced his dad and became an "internet bride". Moved when he was 10 to Texas, mom divorced again and moved to NY when he was 15. Shy but not apparently crazy. Ex-stepfsther surprised. Don't know why this info is so hard to come by in Japanede media.

Sadly, if he keeps silent he'll just serve a sentence for abandoning a body. Unless he confesses, they won't have enough evidence. Cops here are terrible about spoiling crime scenes.

And yes, he's American, although his name suggests a complex heritage...Russian and Turkish. Don't yet know where/how he was raised.

Not my cup of tea, but I love that they are still around, adding their quirkiness to a pretty bland car market. There is a Himiko in my neighborhood driven by a dapper old gentleman who keeps it immaculate. It always makes me smile....I wish I loved my car as much as he loved his.

Posted in: Trump moves to outlaw 'bump stocks;' considers other steps after Florida shooting See in context

There were probably a couple dozen guns, many semiauto, in the gun racks of trucks at my rural high school in the early 80's, and somehow we never had a shooting. Nearly every house has multiple guns, yet our town had exactly one murder from 1952-2011. Those semiautos were no less dangerous than AR15s (more powerful rounds in many cases). The culture has changed, not access to guns.

Posted in: Trump rebukes Japan over nontariff barriers against American cars See in context

Well, there are actually a lot of barriers to non-Japanese cars (where can I buy a Hyundai outside of Tokyo?), but they are mostly theoretical for the US in the absence of any appreciable demand for less reliable cars that are mostly too big.

Mandatory reflex and motor skills/situational awareness tests after 65. I'll be there very soon myself and I'm all for it. Really hoping we have self-driving cars within a few years.

Even if Japan's apology wasn't "heartfelt" (a condition conveniently only to be judged by the Koreans....after they have signed the nth agreement and the nth pile of money has arrived) it simply doesn't matter. "Han" says that the pain and hurt are forever....it's an endless cycle of "Ok, we accept your apology and your money.....oh wait, no we don't because you're such awful people, please try again." Give it up and let them stew.

Study the Korean cultural element called "han" and you will see that no reconciliation is possible. Grievances are eternal and can never be forgotten. The mass suicide of Japan would still not be enough. Don't give another yen.

Not exactly sure why, but when they find recently dead people this is how they report it. It has sonething to do with paramedics not being allowed to say people are dead.

To be clear, they were almost certainly dead when found.

Posted in: American tourist arrested for scrawling graffiti in Shibuya See in context

I'm no fan of graffiti, but was this drawn on the temporary white-painted plywood surrounding the site? The one that is removed and resprayed for each project (the construction company next to my office lines them up and sprays them against their fence in the equipment yard below my window). If so, all this talk of jail time is idiotic. 50,000 yen fine and kick him out of the country.

This is rhetoric aimed at China. The subtext is "Work to solve the NK problem or find yourself in a neighborhood where you aren't the only nuclear power. I think this is a line beyond which the Japanese voter would actually sit up and take action.

Let me guess...they will be required to ask their workers to check a box on a form if they feel they are bring mistreated. The employers will then be asked to improve condition within 5 years if there are any "yes" answers.

Posted in: Japan Inc's safety failures point to deeper malaise See in context

That expensive lifetime employment system was the reason Japan Inc produced such amazing quality.....they had a strong incentive to make sure their company succeeded. If you're paid 2/3 salary and will be thrown away like an empty bottle at the end of your contract (with no hope of ever being permanent), where exactly is your motivation supposed to come from? Can't get married, buy a home, plan a life...just get home late, eat your combini bento, go to sleep in your Leopalace and then get up to do it all again tomorrow. And be ready to move to a different city next year to do it again.

Posted in: 7 crew missing, 3 injured after U.S. Navy destroyer collides with merchant vessel off Japan See in context

Good lord, I agree with YuriOtani. The first reports gave no info on the container ship. I assumed because of my connection with the shipping industry that its damage would be far less severe, but crew could still have been injured or killed. And there is no excuse for a floating sensor platform like this destroyer to have been caught by surprise, even by a sudden unannounced turn by another ship (and there is no suggestion that this happened). The Navy is going to blame the destroyer captain no matter what for getting into the situation. Just desperately hoping the crew members are somehow in an air pocket and will be rescued.
