Posted in: Olympics must go ahead next year as symbol of overcoming COVID-19, Koike says See in context

The Olympics was why Japan was limiting testing in the first place. Now testing will never increase. The title of this article should be “Testing must remain limited so that we can continue to show fake virus case numbers in order to hold the Olympics.”

Japan is conducting only 2.5% of the number of tests other countries. That means the real case numbers might be some 40 times higher than reported. The Olympics “must” go ahead explains why very clearly

225 should be multiplied by 40 for the real number of cases in Japan per day.

Japan is doing 2.5% the number of PCR tests that countries like Australia are doing. Try multiplying 225 cases by 200. The government has their head in the sand.

Another piecemeal edict from the lawmakers and just as people should be social distancing. Smokers will be sharing the virus as they smoke in troves. Another peace meal law by the cronies. And why are universities except from the law? Many students are under 20 and have to endure the smoke all throughout the campus, not to mention those that work at universities.

Japan is reportedly using one-sixth of its total testing capacity.

The relatively low number of COVID-19 cases in Japan is likely due to limited testing.

Despite having cases detected earlier than most countries worldwide, Japan has seemingly not been overrun by the coronavirus.

This may lead to a "false sense of security" that could cause the virus to spread more rapidly than it has so far in Japan.

Abe must not have a TV or access to world news. Infection rates can only increase in these regions with little spread. Other countries, even countries as large as Australia with even less infection numbers are being far more cautious and are even closing borders. The medical panels recommend schools where children sit less than a meter away from each other should reopen ahead of the predicted global peak in May/June? I often wonder about the qualifications of doctors in Japan.

Japan has not dodged the bullet. It is simply in denial because the infection rates are under reported. People cannot get through on the hotline and are unable to get tested. They are told to go home. Those that die are not tested postmortem and so death rates are also underreported.

Most private universities have postponed their semesters until May which will even most likely be pushed back further when the peak hits. National schools and universities however will resume classes. This will surely cause a huge spike in numbers shortly after. The death of many will be on Abe’s hands.

They should just cancel it already and then stop trying to hide the real infection rate in Japan by refusing to test people. The Olympics is responsible for Abe denying the truth. The opposition parties are correct in this.

Only 2% or restaurants in Tokyo are non-smoking

Really are you kidding us ? Have you ever been in Tokyo ? I think no. Typical non smoker hysteria, printing a situation tha doesn' t exist.

Yes 20 years in Tokyo now, permanent resident. If you read my post you’ll see that I didn’t make the numbers up. I cited the figures. Please go to Tabelog yourself and verify before offering baseless “typical non smoker hysteria” comments. Please post with facts and citation yourself if you have anything other than a defensive comment by smoker afraid his nicotine habit may be curtailed. In actual fact you would still be able to smoke just as many cancer sticks a day at home but just not affect orher people’s health if a smoking ban were put in place. So perhaps you are the hysterical one?

If the restaurants are clearly labeled as smoking establishments, then I don’t see the problem here. If you don’t like it, go to another restaurant, no one is forcing you to be with smokers.

Finding a non-smoking restaurant is not an option. Only 2% or restaurants in Tokyo are non-smoking. 15% of restaurants in Japan overall if you go by the numbers in Tabelog.com, Japan’s largest restaurant database. 864,689 restaurants are registered throughout Japan and 137,048 are non-smoking. Of 133,288 restaurants in Tokyo only 27,324 are non-smoking. Many restaurants that list themselves as non-smoking allow smoking in areas and the smoke permeates the entire restaurant. Why are smokers vilified? Because you cause passive smoking and lung disease and 15,000 deaths a year. The real criminals are the LDP however with 33.35% (Japan Tobacco Wikipedia page) ownership in Japan Tobacco they are not going to do away with their billions in earnings.

As has been written in many news reports today again on this issue in Japan, people don’t always have a choice when accompanying others, especially on work related dinners. As the ban basically allows smoking at almost every restaurant in Japan as so few are over 100sqm there are very few non-smoking restaurants.

i agree that visitors from countries where smoking in restaurants is banned (almost every other civilized country) will find it unacceptable to eat in a smoke filled establishment.

if anyone wants to start a crowd funded YouTube video warning non smokers that they will find it difficult to find a non smoking restaurant when they come for the Olympics I will be the first to donate. Please post your crowd find link here.

As an occasional smoker I have to select my places to eat and sometimes that's difficult in Tokyo with so many restaurants turning to snobbery

It is never difficult to smoke in a restaurant in Japan. Smoking is allowed in almost all restaurants. Go to Tabelog.com and input non-smoking in the filter and you will see how few non-smoking restaurants there are. Many restaurants list themselves as non-smoking when they have non-smoking tables next to smoking ones. The toxins are still in the air and carry on clothing. http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2004/02/24/1077497549008.html?from=storyrhs

Smokers are the cause of this, not non-smokers. Non-smokers "whining" is justified.

if you lot don't like smoking there are hundreds of non-smoking restaurants in Tokyo

Just a user you are missing the point. You're saying something like if you don't want to be murdered don't walk down the street. You're asking the victims to accept responsibility and change behavior instead of the perpetrator. Fortunately we don't live in that kind of world. As you no-doubt know you can smoke in almost every restaurant in Japan. Finding a non-smoking one is like finding a needle in a haystack. Tebelog.com, Japan's largest online restaurant registry has 89508 restaurants listed. 21693 are listed as non-smoking. Most of the restaurants listed as non-smoking are in fact smoking. I know this because I called over 15 in my area to confirm that they are completely non-smoking. NONE of them were actually non-smoking which I brought to the attention of Tebelog.com who contacted the restaurants and had them change their listings. Please look at the negative ratings on your posts and you'll see that most people vehemently disagree with your comments.
