I read about a paragraph. I had no idea - even after having lived in Japan for twelve years - that girls couldn't be on the field at Koshien. Too bad.

Posted in: America seen from abroad: Arrogant, nice, tech-savvy, free See in context

There are a lot of us Americans that have traveled abroad and who have come to love other countries, and to know - to a greater degree - their people. I lived in Japan a long time, and did, during that time, come to love the Japanese people, their culture, society, customs, traditions, and the land itself. Thought I spent considerably less time in other parts of the world, there is much to like and to dislike about those places to and in which I lived and traveled.

If I had the opportunity, I would return to Japan in particular, and to Asia in General, in a moment. I love the USA, and if I spend the rest of my days here, it's all good, but Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Brazil, and other places, have treasure and great things about them as well.

YuriOtani, I, too, have talked to U.S. veterans of the Okinawa Campaign, read reports, and researched documentation and they all dispute that 10,000 rapes the first day thing, the shooting everyone they met without distinction and the Japanese Military had left the island assertions you make. Even in the 1940s and 30s, and later, the U.S. Military had a code of conduct and a code of justice, precursors to what we have in the US Military today, and also we were signatories to the Geneva Conventions. The JIA had none such and withdrew from the Geneva Conventions prior to the invasion of Manchuria in31 (though re-entering after the war).

I agree. Mine passed when I was in Japan and I couldn't get home for his funeral.

This young lady has no excuse. She knew what she was doing, and she knew it was wrong. She'll get a light sentence because she's a minor.

Tragic...prayers for the family of this Grandfather...

Posted in: Doctors should be able to ask patients about guns See in context

Does the good doctor ask if his patients have or carry knives, pocket or otherwise? How about if they light off fireworks, especially on the 4th of July or New Year's Day? Does he ask if they self-serve their cars at the gas station, and fill up at the pump themselves? Does he ask hos patients if they use hairspray? What abut asking his patients if they swim in pools, which have water that is high in chlorine? Does he ask them if they drive a car, ride a bike or take the bus? Does he ask them their choices of occupation (especially if his patients are in construction, car or motorcycle racing, nuclear facilities, the National Guard or Military Reserves, fire fighters, cops, or EMTs)?

How about simply asking medical doctors to do what they're trained to do: practice medicine? Asking someone about their possession of firearms would seem to be a question for an attorney, not a medical doctor.

I guess Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Brunei, Myanmar, The Republic of China, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea were all unavailable for comment? After all, these nations, as well, have expressed outrage and concern over the "P"RC (a.k.a "Red") China's extensions into the Southeast Pacific. When will Beijing get the idea that she and the "P"RC don't rule the World, nor the Pacific?

In my twelve years in Japan, I think I was "stopped" once, and it was for parking my bike in a no bicycle parking area. The officer was nice enough, but made sure I knew what was going on and why I was being told to move my bike.

Posted in: Mass killing sparks debate: Why didn't the system prevent it? See in context

There are always armchair quarterbacks and sofa-recliner experts who come out of the woodwork and say this or that could've been done. Like someone else mentioned, 20-20 vision hindsight always is. In this case, the perpetrator detailed what he was going to do and how many he was going to off had he been given the opportunity. He is sent to a mental hospital and stays there - what, two? three days? - and is then set free by his doctor. No judgment of the doctor will come from me, as people such as this Uematsu can fake and fool the system. However, I noticed when living in Japan that being disabled in any fashion was something to be hidden: a shameful thing, almost. Would this attitude being changed have helped this situation? Would it have prevented this crime? It probably would't have. It seemed this person Uematsu was bent on doing his deed, and when given the chance, he did it. Evil always finds a way. If he hadn't done his deed at a mental hospital, there are other places and other ways where he could have and probably would have vented his evil.

No system on the face of this Earth is 100% foolproof. No one country has total and complete insight on hos tragedies such as this can be prevented. Yes, better security systems and armed - or at the very least, highly observant - security guards could have prevented this, but even such is not 100% foolproof.

I guess my point of this post is simply to say, there are proactive measures that can be taken to prevent this sort of thing from happening again. Diligent observance, talking frustrations and anger out, and - if need be - professional counseling can be deterrents, and they don't have to dissuade nor nullify personal freedoms.

While 1st - or at least 2nd - degree murder would be an appropriate charge for the both of them, I doubt that they'll get such. Yes, they are minors, but at age 16 and 17, many, MANY know what is right and what is wrong. Dealing with teens as I do on a daily basis, these two knew what they were doing. Stupidity doesn't justify this, nor does youth, nor is this or was this an "accident" in any loose sense of the word. This was a deliberate choice, and sadly enough, they will likely suffer zero consequences for it.

I guess this is why we've never visited mainland China, even when we were close and lived in Japan for some years. Though I have had and have now many good, good students and friends form the mainland, and they have oft invited us to come and visit, we likely won't `til things change over there, as far as their form of government is concerned. We won't be holding our breath nor waiting by the phone in anticipation...

Posted in: Do you think Russia should have been banned from the Rio Olympics over allegations of state-sponsored doping? See in context

If every country that doped or was caught doping received a ban, there'd likely be few nations competing. I disagree totally with doping, and hope that athletes who get caught doing so get banned for a good, long time, if not for life, from their events, but to ban a country because it happens is simply throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Otherwise, East Germany would never have been allowed to compete, especially in women's events....

Hmmmm...my Dad, at one time, worked four different jobs during the same period time, yet never forgot to drop us off where we needed to go, my brother and me, and never left us for the entire day in a blazing hot car on a searing Summer day. I get exhaustion. I get forgetfulness. I get stress. I get working a lot of overtime. I won't judge this Dad, but neither will I give him a pass (it's not like he was supposed to pick up paper clips at a store, or something: it was his son!). Yes, he and his wife will have to live with this for the rest of their lives, especially Dad, and that, in and of itself, is a prison all its own. My only prayer is for their peace and comfort.
