All Japan has to do is wait another 5-6 years then there will not be any of these "survivors" left alive to cause all this fuss

Japan has the right to press the North Korean dictatorship for the issue of this to be fully resolved

China is bitching about this as they are trying to essentially turn Japan Into to a vassal state. China should stop bitching about what Japan does and concentrate on its own problems

I never said they couldn't. I asked, if you check the post, does anyone in Japan bothered about these sanctions?

Japan has not bullied Russia and behaved itself and what did that get Japan from Russia; NOTHING. What you said is just not true

Does it really matter what Japan puts in school textbooks about these tiny islands? South Korea controls the islands and Japanese school textbooks is hardly going to undermine their control of them. This is yet more Japan-bashing by the ROK. And what exactly could they do by "reciprocal countermeasures"?. They have already expect ivy recognised Russian occupation of the Northern Territories, what much more could the ROK do to screw over Japan?

night knight:You sound like a real spokeperson from U.S. State Department. Russians show their attitude to Japan by removing japanese consumer goods from ban list. U.S. and EU food and consumer good were and still are in that list, in response to western sanctions. Also Russians offered to Japan a joint venture, to build a gas pipe from Karafuto to Hokkaido. This is a real attitude, not U.S. propaganda !

So the Russians have removed Japanese consumer good from a ban list, this solve this dispute how? And as for this supposed pipeline from Sakhalin to Hokkaido, IF it exists, there will be conditions attached such as dropping this dispute or allowing the Russians who occupy the islands to enter Japan with no visas; again this does NOT solve the problem of the stolen and illegally occupied islands.

No matter what happens, you all need to remember that Russia has no intention of returning the islands back to Japan. If they had any intention of returning two of them, then they would not be building infrastructure on Shikotan and letting more people move there. This is just an example of Russia's "screw Japan" attitude

night knight: Jay, if you do not believe him, it doesn't mean that ALL Japanese people think the same way. It seems you are constantly trying to impose a western sort of negativity to Russo-Japanese relations here and there.

But promises he makes to Japan ARE worthless; he made offers to return two of the islands then axed the deal. He also lies through his teeth when he says that he is committed to solving this dispute as if he were, the two islands he previously offered would be empty instead of having more occupiers on them.

And speaking of the occupiers on the islands, if Moscow is SO concerned about their standard of living, they should invest money there themselves instead of begging Japan to do it

alex rockstone: Correct me if I am wrong but "training exercises" of SDF would hardly impress anyone. They weren't organized to seize any large parts of foreign land. As for relations of Japanese to neighbors, they should stop all relations with real barbarians who bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki by most brutal weapon of mass destruction.

If it were not for the Americans, then Stalin would have stolen part of Hokkaido proper or maybee even all of it. And still no one here can show me not one SHRED of proof of this so-called ''offer' by Moscow to return two of the STOLEN and ILLEGALLY occupied Japanese islands back to their rightful owners.

YuriOtani: That is fine with me, so there will not be a peace treaty. Second no fuel imports from Russia. Putin has chosen the path for Russia and they have to live with it. So it is come full circle, no northern territories no peace. Your war games do no scare the free people of Japan

Well said my friend. Japan should also scrap the easy entry into Japan for the Russians who occupy the Northern Territories. Japan should also hold "training excersises" on Hokkaido's Nemuro Peninsula; let's see how those barbarians in Moscow like that

sfjp330: Is there proof that he didn't? Regardless, the two islands that is mentioned represent ony 7 percent of the land space.

Yes, I know just how much of the land the two islands represent. And i have read about this on Wikipedia for many hours and can find no proof that he offered Japan anything back in 06. And even if he DID make such an offer, he can not be trusted to keep his word so any promises from him are worthless

zichi:The fact remains, whatever is said and stated, Russia are in occupation of the four northern islands and there's no way that Japan can use to get them back. If they are willing to hand back two of them, that would be better than zero, and if not, well then at least for the near future or while Putin remains in power, Japan will just have to grin and bear?

The problem is getting Putin to offer 2 of the islands without any conditions. But he can not be trusted to keep his word so any promises he makes are worthless

If Putin will not return any of the islands to Japan, then he can kiss better relations with Japan goodbye

sfjp330: Yes. In 2006, then-President Putin reinstated the 1956 Soviet offer of two of the four territories. The Japanese replied that they would only accept all of the islands. Putin retorted that Russia would now give the Japanese no territory. These actions moved the two parties back to their original positions.

Is there proof of this other than Wikipedia? And how can Putin reinstate the 1956 offer when Moscow said that as long as the US military is in Japan, they will not give back any of the islands? And if China and Russia can work out a deal wherein Moscow gives territory to China, then why not make a serious offer to Japan instead of offering it then withdrawing it when Tokyo does not thank Russia.

Does anyone here actually think that Russia will EVER return any of the islands back to Japan? Because this latest stunt from Moscow has me thinking that they wont. Moscow has the NERVE to bitch about Japan placing sanctions on em for their actions in Ukraine, maybe if Russia had not backed out of the last deal to return two of the islands back to Japan then Japan would have been less inclined to place sanctions on those barbarians in the Kremlin
