CNN viewers will be upset about my first comment, but reality is reality.

I don’t watch much CNN or FOX but I think that everyone, with the possible exception of some Orange Cult members, know your first comment is demonstrably false and just a poor attempt to spread misinformation. /smh

Back when I married, a Japanese woman was not allowed to change her name when marrying a foreigner.

Correct, if she wanted to change her name she had to go to family court or it was not possible.

Until the 90s if a foreigner was naturalized they had to choose a Japanese name that could be written in Yamato kanji. Fortunately that has passed and a foreign name in kana is acceptable now.

Actually licensed radio operators have increased in most countries during the pandemic. The US has over 800,000 licensed Amateur Radio Ops and increasing, faster than Japan by the way. India has also seen a large increase. It’s a hobby, socially distanced by design, and has little to do with cell phones or the the internet, which most vies as tools…

It certainly has nothing to do with “not adapting to modern living” in any country!

I mean who could trust a country that has zero poverty, high home ownership, happy citizens and a hugely popular government, right?

Doesn’t sound like the China I lived in at all!

Zero poverty? Happy Citizens? Hugely popular government? Home ownership is quite high, even if it’s for reasons that are much different from other countries I’ll agree to that one. I guess 1 out of 4 isn’t so bad when talking about the CCP.

The “army” is out in mass today! lol

Oh, and speaking of those year’s wasn’t that during the time Republicans had Nixon and Ford running thing?

Carter was President, nice try.

Sorry, I lived too and it started with the oil embargos around 72/73 when Nixon was president and continued through the successive Ford administration. Carter became president in 1977.

Nice try though...

@Bass

Here we go, it's like back in 1976 with the gas shortages along the East Coast and Biden has just dug a bigger hole for himself politically

I’m not sure how this is like the oil/gas shortages of the 70’s, but OK...

Oh, and speaking of those year’s wasn’t that during the time Republicans had Nixon and Ford running thing? Good thing that a Democrat took over in 1977 and got things back on track, at least as far as the gas shortages.

Still don’t see how this relates to Biden though as the causes, and solutions, were entirely different.

You’re right, not 30 times!

Actually, according to worldmeters, the deaths/1M in Japan is 74. In SD it’s 2,192. That’s only 29.6 times Japan’s death rate. Certainly not 30 times! /s

Seapig, If I had that much trouble reading statistics, Id keep my mouth shut.

I would certainly suggest that you follow your own advice, Bob. It seems quite sound.

Posted in: What awaits 2 Americans accused of helping Ghosn flee Japan? See in context

Does any of this make sense?

They also argue that jumping bail is not a crime under Japanese law. That is technically accurate,

Japanese prosecutors say they have enough evidence to convict the Taylors.

If convicted, the Taylors face up to three years in prison and a fine of up to 300,000 yen.

They were arrested for something that “technically isn’t a crime” but prosecutors say they have enough evidence of that non-crime to convict them.

Sounds like a fishing expedition to me...

So it means they were extradited without any charges even being filed against them?

It will be interesting to see what charge the prosecutors eventually make.

@ Lamilly you said if she was keeping the pension she would have kept up with the rent. That is 100% your own assumption and is not based in any evidence or fact. She could keep the pension and spend it on alcohol or Pachinko or host clubs. Or maybe she took it out the money and threw it in the street.

Actually that she was getting a pension is also an assumption because it doesn’t say that in the article. The article does say the mother was “thought to be” around 60 at the time of death. From that one could also assume that she was too young and not yet receiving a pension. A lot of missing fact here...

You do realize that essential workers have a different standard, dont you?

And there’s the problem, essential worker!

The Presidential Policy Directive 21 (PPD-21): identifies 16 critical infrastructure sectors and essential workers. Campaigning by the VP is not included anywhere and, since Pence isn’t classified as an essential worker by Trump’s own directive he is supposed to quarantine for 14 days. Trump is again moving the goal posts to fit what he wants, the hell with everyone else!

You have to have a local bank account if you want to do any onshore business there. By law.

Incorrect!

This says a lot more though!

It is Trump, however, who maintained an office in China during his first run for president, and partnered with a major government-controlled company

But since Trump seems to be a government-controlled (CCP, that is) president then it makes perfect sense.

He knows he’s losing the race and with nothing else he is resorting to scandals, not to help himself but to try and damage his opponent.

Lock him up! Lock him up!

Trump’s advisers hope that his stance – which includes falsely accusing Biden of wanting to “defund the police” — shifts attention away from the pandemic

Even though the false “defund the police” allegation has been throughly debunked and, in to put it bluntly, another outright lie by the Trump side they continue to use it at every opportunity. Sling enough **** & lies and hope that some stick. This seems to have become Trump’s main campaign tool, although he’s proven himself very adept at misleading through lies over the past 4 years...

Florida is case in point (pardon the pun). The state is well BELOW the national average in per capita deaths due to corona, especially compared to places like New York and New Jersey.

The article is talking about the current situation. The fact that Florida has the greatest number of active infections in the US right now, combined with an infection and death curve which very steep and doesn’t look like it will flatten any time soon, could have a lot to due with the state being “singled out” as you say.

Posted in: U.S. says Ghosn's son paid $500,000 in cryptocurrency to man for escape from Japan See in context

@nishikat

Don't forget the [US] Feds are against him now.

The Feds aren’t interested in Ghosn. The Taylors were arrested because Japan issued an arrest warrant and the US has an extradition treaty with Japan. The US feels required to do due diligence and take them into custody and, ultimately, decide to extradite or not extradite.

They’re not interested in Ghosn’s son either. They just brought up the payment to add weight to their argument that the Taylors not be granted bail since they have sufficient funds to flee.

In the end I think it’s 50/50 on the Taylors’ extradition. As far as Ghosn and/or his son there is nothing there for them and the FBI could care less!

With a president that has a strategy of creating conflict and division it’s no wonder this type of tragedy has increased over the past three+ years. Add that to the leadership’s mismanagement during the pandemic, and the current 145,000 and increasing deaths one can only hope that a new administration will be able to recover. It’s almost certain that the detrimental effects of the Trump presidency will drag the US down for years to come.

Oh and @JBird please also compare the infections in children.

I didn’t compare infections in adults, I just stated that erbaviva’s post was factually incorrect.

I did mention that the US death toll from COVID-19, even with all the precautions, is double the highest estimate of influenza deaths already. You’ll notice I didn’t include anything about their ages.

Posted in: Tokyo confirms 131 new coronavirus infections on Saturday See in context

@erbaviva

A PhD does not make one a medical doctor and after reading all that you wrote all I can say, to quote a saying, is A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. I can tell you’ve read a bit but truly understand very little.

There are many coronavirus, most are not dangerous, some cause a cold, others are more dangerous. They are similar to influenza virus (A & B) in that the have a single strand of RNA as their genome, but that is where the genomic similarity ends. I’m not sure what you were referring to concerning DNA. The coronavirus that causes COVID-19 is certainly not an influenza virus.

In some cases a COVID-19 infection can cause cytokine storm, which is a dangerous overreaction of the immune system, but that doesn’t make COVID-19 an autoimmune disease.

In the US it is estimated that between 25,000 and 60,000 people died from the last large flu season. During the flu season nothing special was done to combat the epidemic. From COVID-19 the death toll has already passed 130,000, AND this is with lockdowns, testing, tracing, masks, etc, etc. AGAIN, this coronavirus IS NOT a flu virus, AND COVID-19 is not the flu!

@ Burning Bush

Ok, and how many have recovered?

100, 500, 1000?

New infections MINUS recovered cases would give us a clear picture of whether it's spreading or not.

New infections yesterday = 503

Total number of recovered since the beginning = 622

Yes, it’s spreading. And the rate is beginning to shoot up!

Please do a bit of research before posting your inaccuracies down playing the infection.
