”…preparation will cause no destruction the environment or disrupt local people's lives.”

You obviously have never lived nearby any on e of these major constructions. I agree with Kazuko, Aoyama jingu gaien is one of the most beautiful spots during the fall foliage season and I do hope the trees can be saved.

As a vegetarian myself I can’t understand this guy whining about a vegan tempura soba. If you want it that badly stop searching for a venue that’ll serve it and make it yourself with the ingredients you can find. You should be responsible for your lifestyle choices, you won’t make it very far with others expecting to cater to your needs everywhere you go.

Be respectable of the Korean community here in Japan, who work, live, build households, and follow the due diligence of their bicultural status. Many have friends and family in both countries and all the “hatred” publicized towards Japan from Korea could be heartbreaking, and vice versa. We learn to live with whatever the consequences our decisions may bring, but hopefully the two nations can overcome the difficulties in building a better relationship.

Just bad politics to interfere with business operation, a classic mistake. If you lay down the facts, it’s pretty clear that this deal needs to go through.

Posted in: Himeji Castle entry fees set to be hiked for all non-local visitors See in context

@hawk, so true, no need to physically enter the castle to enjoy the view. Regarding the definition of “local” resident discount, it states pretty clearly as “Himeji residents,” which I assume literally means those who reside in Himeji. My stance is neutral, as this practice is very common worldwide, I wouldn’t call it a discrimination. Consider it a resident privileged discount as opposed to premium rates for non-residents.

Posted in: Japan wants its hardworking citizens to try a 4-day workweek See in context

@Jdoe, I couldn’t agree more, what’s up with everyone so obnoxiously obsessed with reminding each other how “busy” they are? I know firsthand that longer hours doesn’t translate into efficiency and that’s the case I see here all the time. Plus all that time they spend eating and drinking together, I almost think they enjoy staying at the office because they don’t want to return to their teeny weeny homes with one bathroom.

Posted in: Man arrested for groping girl on subway, spraying bodily fluid on her See in context

First of all, all the twisted wording in the article is confusing, am I to interpret this literally that he somehow “sprayed” “bodily fluid?” Secondly, though I have limited knowledge of Tozai line, I’ve heard from many that it in fact is the busiest line during the commuting hours and unlike others, it is very difficult to even move once you’re on board as people come in at every stop and nobody gets off. The victim probably didn’t face many options and it is beyond infuriating thinking of the trauma she must’ve faced, and really hope his full identity is publicized and necessary justice and action will be taken.

Common sense, one of my former colleagues used to turn off his cell as he left the office. It was jawbreaking to see how much time Japanese workers spend communicating with each other after hours, including weekends! Maybe not the case for all companies, but drawing a certain level of line by enforcement would be a partial solution…

Posted in: Lawson introduces staff badge indicating foreign-language speakers See in context

@starpunk

It was originally a dairy shop owned by a person named Lawson back in the states. Japanese company bought it and it became a convenience store here, but to this day their dairy products are well known for, such as their infamous dessert cake rolls with cream fillings. I think the logo you’re referring to is the one with a milk bottle, hence its origin.

Just do what most countries do and let them take care of it at the airport or abolish it and boutiques will survive with duty free shops at the airport. Tax free shops at local stores like biccamera and donki are meaningless for vendors anyway.
