the government would save a tax money that is needed elsewhere if they simply let certain convicted criminals be turned over to those of us who are fathers and or grandfathers for their punishment

Resident Koreans in Japan already enjoy many special privileges? such as a a fourth generation not being allowed to become Japanese citizen and still listed as a "resident alien" and facing constant bigotry because they are still not allowed to integrate into Japanese society. even the school children face harassment .....do you envy these privileges

Why is Yasukuni any different than Arlington? The United States has had several war criminal of their own who are national heroes but the winners get to write the history...which means "we include all the things we wish we had done and leave out the things we don't want anyone to mention and if they can't be ignored we blame it on the guys who lost" All the records that were kept by the infamous Unit 731 were appropriated by the Untied States so they could be used for American research. that makes America an "accessory after the fact"

the Atom bombs were not necessary though. Japan had previously gone through the consulates Sweden and Russia asking for a diplomatic end to the war and was ignored. Russia for one did not pass on the request.

the problem in South Korea is the Status of Forces Agreement is still in effect which means that no matter what the Americans do to anyone they can only be punished by their own military..even if it is murder or rape.

American military personnel are subject only to their own military so the government is long overdue to institute a new agreement...the SOFA is overdue to be replaced with civilian justice for all crimes committed by all personnel outside the areas of a military establishment.

Japan is headed in that direction with a forces that is no longer completely defensive and it is about time

Trump was considered to be a bad joke...nobody believed he would last this long because they didn't think there were enough racists and people ignorant enough to vote for him.

and the Hillary is not that bad for a politician....the Republicans and Fox news have been telling lies about her for so long that some people are starting to believe the lies.....she is just bout the most liberal member of the congress

there must be something missing from the story. I am sure there is a lot of background that is left out of the article and in all probability there was either more to this incident or a huge history between the two.

paid protesters are a common site all over the world. I have seen them in South Korea and in the United States. visiting in America I saw protesters in front of a grocery store one time and found out they were being paid to stand there with placards by one of the stores competitors.

At least in Okinawa this is a cause that will bring out a number of people who want to be there.

Even in the United States it was only the racist right wingers who were the 'birthers' with Donald Trump leading the way, I can't believe that anyone outside that insular group of mental defectives bought into that crap.

it is the United States and even though their constitution and bill of rights guarantee that it is a secular nation with no one religion being held in any higher regard than any other many of the people seem to have the illusion it is a "Christian nation"....Thomas Jefferson for one was disgusted by all churches.

from the posts here you would think it was an American site with all the vitriol against Muslims! it is a shame Buddhism has not taken hold in America.

why all the fuzz? the United States talks so proudly about freedom of speech yet when you make a joke they don't like or say the wrong thing they are afraid someone will be insulted and cry "oh no you can't say that it might hurt someones feelings!"

in Japan anime/manga and especially doujinshi just let them be.....people will like them and read or they will not like them and they will be ignored

The reverse or feminine (moon, night, waning sun) sauvastika is less often used most non-Buddhists also probably do not realize this ancient symbol of harmony.... to the Hindu it is a symbol of prosperity and good fortune representing the four vedas.

a few short years of evil should not mean that his ancient symbol is forever co-opted.

I did acclimate to a degree first in Korea but was never allowed to fully enter the society. I took the girls and their cousins to amusement parks and movies but was coopted as an English teacher to fill in much of my spare time as my wife and most of her friends had learned their English at school from a teacher who learned English from another Korean teacher. They knew the words but needed help learning to pronounce them so Englishmen and Americans could understand them. Free English classes continued when I was transferred to Japan....that was some time ago though I have been retired from the Military for some time now.

as you watched the news they were calling it a mass shooting by a co-worker thus assuming a white Christian.

later when the name was revealed you could hear the glee in their voices and see the relief in their smiles as the reporters began to bring forth the term "terrorist"

so long as the suspect was not white they could call him a terrorist and when they discover the suspects were not Christians it was verified they could call them terrorists.

this is why i get so disgusted with America..they do not even attempt to hide their bigotry

the Treaty of San Francisco stopped just short of turning Japan into an American colony. it Donald Trump has his way that would become a reality. just leave the excuse for using Japan and Okinawa is long past.

I remember my Air Force days and the smirking Yank G.I.s talking about their time in Japan or Okinawa or Korea and the girls ......

Korea does still have some cause for a presence but at what cost. why do the Japanese want to endure that same cost to their civilian population

I believe the lack of a smoking ban in public places is a great tourist draw. Too many countries have gone way over board with controlling what should be personal decisions and if and where to smoke is one of them.

while personally I no longer smoke it is up to my friends and family ...and anyone else to decide if they want to smoke and I will provide ashtrays.

Japan is great the way it is ...there is nothing wrong with expecting a small amount of adjustment from visitors and that is necessary to enjoy visiting. I have spent time in nations from Iran and Kuwait to Uruguay and Argentina and wherever you go you can always find people in the large cities who speak English or Spanish.
