Posted in: Why doesn’t the U.S. adopt the metric system? See in context

The year I graduated from high school (1974), my events in track and field (athletics) were the 880, 1 mile, and 2 mile. Track and field is all metric now, though you will find some meets that feature legacy distances like the mile. Of course it would make good sense for the US to do the same across the board, but it is one of those quirky differences that make the world an interesting place.

Posted in: Teacher's conviction for groping girl on bus overturned by Tokyo court See in context

He was a teacher at my kids' school. Info on this while the process was ongoing was hard to come by. He was in limbo for three years, not able to work, on a reduced salary until the matter was finally settled. He persevered. Sometimes we saw him and his supporters in front of the local train station working to bring attention to this matter. I think there was support for him in the community, and it appears that the people close to him stayed loyal.
