Japan and the US are two totally different worlds so when people compare a combini store here getting robbed at knifepoint and a drugstore in the US getting robbed at gunpoint (funny no one has even mentioned thart the perp also, stole drugs...possibly strung out?) there is no compairison. Also don't forget when you read these type of stories that you are not getting the full story. A lot of people in the US tend to fight back, causing the perp to do something stupid. Here in Japan we all know generally someone being robbed tends to be compliant and give the perp what ever they want, so most of the time they remain safe. (but, that seems to be changing too.)

Do not forget "the right to bear arms" in the US is not just about protection. When I was still living in the states I shot both competitively and hunted. So those sports/hobbies should be taken away from me and thousands of others because this world has wackos that rob and murder. The criminals that obtain guns illegally should be able to break into someones house and rob and maybe kill them because this person has no way to protect themselves? Some people will say.."you don't need to protect yourself, just wait for them to leave then call the police." Ok so some drug addict or out right murderer, kills your spouse and children and leaves you crippled for the rest of your life. Call the police....good luck with that. Me crippled, my wife and kids gone....just roll me off the nearest bridge please.

Mistake above...sorry. Well almost everyone here seems to be on the same page about one point...that this guy did not legally obtain the gun he used. So what good are tighter gun control measures going to do? He got it illegally. Gun control measures help only so much. (Just like here in Japan, only certain civilians can own guns, they have to be registered each year, and the ammo they have is checked and replaced for the same amount of new each year.) But if a criminal here wants a gun bad enough he is going to get one.

I am not trying, nor do i want to start some sort of gun debate here (we all know that goes no where). But as for the gun man, where do you think he got the gun? Do you think he legally purchased it? No I am not for every yahoo out there being able to carry a gun either. My point is that he is a murderer/criminal...whether guns are legal or not he's going to get one.

Several years ago a Okinowan police officer was actually fired for knocking one of these jerks off his bike AFTER a glass bottle was tossed at him. Most of the public complained about the firing of the police officer, but the stupid city (Ginowan) would not bring him back on.

I have a feeling this will someday be my (in laws) cousin and aunt. My cousin is 40 still lives at home, no job, and spends all my uncle's life insurance money on her boyfriends and gas. My aunt says "I can't control her." So I can see it coming some day sad to say, when mom won't give her any more money.

I never really hear about it much from countries where the women are more assertive. That is what makes it seem more of a problem here. Why since there were witnessess to this, this guy is not being charged I have no idea. Can not the police hold him and the proscuter's office charge him? I mean this is an under age girl that he felt up. So actually it would be molesting not groping right?

Kind of a funny story that applies to this somewhat. This last winter my wife was on her way home (on the train), she was wearing a nice skirt that stopped right above the knee, nothing unusual or provocative about it. A man about 50ish decided to try to find out what kind of panties she might be wearing. She broke two of his fingers and dropped him to the floor. She called me and I met her down at the cop shop, she did press charges. I hope other women/girls on the train were paying attention (and other would be gropers too). 27 years of jujitsu, she was/is my sensei, when I first came to Japan. My point being is that 50% of her students are now junior high age girls and older, so maybe the time of women "letting" things happen to them is ending....I hope.

@All, just some info for posters, I'm not someone who does not know Japan and on this site ranting about things I know nothing about. I lived in Okinawa and Osaka for 16 years, have a Okinawan wife of 14 years, and just moved back to the U.S. Peace and best wishes to all.

@Yumimoto You are a very narrow minded person. Please tell me why, if the U.S. and U.K. are only concerned with the global economy, and not helping with relief efforts, why are rescue crews there? Why are billion dollar aircraft carriers stationed right off the coast? Why are personel possibly exposing themselves to radiation also? (according to you, levels are already too dangerous)Oh I am forgetting, you are nice and comfortable sitting somewhere spewing your nonsense and anti US/UK bull. Also why are organizations like Red Cross collecting donations and doing what they can to help also. Oh, I forgot that too, they are in it for the money. (obviously meant to be sarcastic)I have a lot of friends in Tokyo and they have been in contact with both embassies (SP) and have been assured that if they are in any sort of danger they will be contacted ASAP.I guess that is all for now, I just get tired of all the "anti" posts.

@DocHolliday603, After 13 years in Okinawa I have personally witnessed more than once the fact that it counts for absolutely nothing, especially if you are any nationality other than Japanese. (and God help you if you are an Americajin)If this person had stopped after hitting the old woman and no one had seen the accident, and he tried to help by calling the police and an ambulance, possibly even tried CPR,(very few Japanese even realize there is such a thing, or even care) the police would do their little BS investigation and most likely charge the driver with professional negligence resulting in death. Because all drivers are "professionals".Then the driver would get the pleasure of spending the next 22 days in jail while they "decide" whether to charge them or not. Then spend the next 3-4 months (if bail is granted) bouncing back and forth to court. Then get sentenced, and spend the next 6 months to two years in prison. This all happened to an American and Japanese friend of mine, both times they had struck and killed an older person walking out into traffic from in between parked cars at night. So it's not right legally or morally, but here in Okinawa I can fully understand the notion to just go. Maybe someday the police will pop into the 21st century and get some real investigative training from a modern police force, other than idiots training idiots.
