The point is not "was it a mistake". The point is, "should they be killed for it". Refusing to see this distinction implies agreement with their killing.

@Fox Cloud Lelan: "you have to be utterly annihilated". Really?? Japan was utterly annihilated?? Tell that to the 80 million who survived the war they started and rebuilt Japan into one of the world's largest economies (with a huge assist from America, by the way). Why do people from the minor countries hate Americans so much? Jealous much?

Asking this question about the country that was defending and that had almost zero military infrastructure at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack, is insensitive and irresponsible journalism. We won. We had enormous and critical help from our allies and we won. Get over it and stop hating America for its success. Stopping a war is not a crime. Fighting back, by whatever means, stopped the war and led to the really quite remarkable peace that most of us now enjoy. Perfect, no. But much better than the life the Japanese were providing for their victims.
