alladin - you act like you know jake personally. i don't think you have the right to say that kind of stuff. take away his ukulele and he's just a wimpy kid? well i can take away your job and you're just a wimpy homeless guy. what kind of logic is that? i'm from hawaii and i'm proud of this guy. at least he's doing something...unlike my friends still stuck on the rock.

Posted in: Anti-smoking 'monsters' have smokers on the run See in context

The real "monsters" are those selfish people who insist on smoking and polluting the air that we breathe in various places. Despite what this stupid, know-nothing journalist says, there is plenty of accredited evidence that passive smoking, or second hand smoke, causes illness and death. Smokers can and must submit to the will of the majority ofsensible people everywhere, who want this disgusting drug habit banned.

Smoking causes pollution? On a scale equivalent to maybe...say cars? I think you're blowing it out of proportion. I think everyone in the world knows that second hand smoke is bad...you don't need to repeat the same thing like a politician. There is evidence that it causes harmful side effects but as the author and others have said, where will this stop? This is all about cause and effects. Since smoking is bad for you, we're gonna make you stop. The we in that sentence being people like you realist. Then are you going to ban alcohol because it leads to dumb decisions and alcoholism? Are you going to ban cars because it pollutes the air just like smoking...like you said? There has to be a line...and people are crossing it right now by banning an person's individual decision. To defend myself, I have never smoked in the presence of children. I at least understand that much.

A great lot of allegations but no mention of how in the world those allegations came to be; a mole, phone tapping, mail tracing, railroading, what?

I have no doubt that these people are heavily armed nuts who think they are Christians, but that in itself is not a crime. I guess I should be happy they and their children did not get surprised attacked and burned alive like Branch Davidians. Interesting that the Oklahoma bombing is mentioned but not the government massacre that sparked it.

well they mentioned that an FBI agent had infiltrated their organization. so i assume that agent gathered information on the group. besides, the FBI has been following this group for years and its no surprise that if they planned to attack police officers in april...the government would feel responsible to take action now.

Since when has dolphin hunting been illegal? The Japanese are hunting in their own waters, I think this is an issue of sovereignty. If the meat is toxic, then the Japanese government needs to investigate, not some self-appointed Western activists who think they have the moral high ground on everything. You might have a point on how MAYBE the whale hunting is illegal, but saying that the dolphin hunt needs to stop? Thats taking it too far. They're hunting in their own waters, dolphins are not going extinct, I think this issue is done.

So you advocate killing a Japanese whaler in the name of saving whales? Wow...nice ideology there. Then the Japanese should just ram all of the SS ships into the sea. There...you have escalation

Posted in: Whale of a problem See in context

Ok maybe Japan should. If its a lie then why doesn't the IWC stop it right now? Must not be that bad of a lie because they're still hunting. And why do you people care so much if Japan is hunting whales that aren't endangered?

Like I said earlier, its just the West trying to dictate their "righteous" ethical views on the rest of the world. You are beginning to find out that people don't care about you anymore. The U.S., let alone Australia (wow...big political clout...) can't boss around people anymore. If Japan wants to hunt whales, I think it should be able to. Since when did Australia own Antarctica? You can't reserve the whole bottom half of the world as a sanctuary.

Posted in: Whale of a problem See in context

Japan has been whaling for decades now...just like they have been hunting dolphins. Why is it all of a sudden its a problem? Its because some pompous, righteous Americans/Aussies/NZ people thought it was unethical to hunt these "beautiful" animals. Well its up to your interpretation. I can call cows beautiful animals too but thousands are slaughtered everyday and I don't care.

I also think other countries don't have the right to dictate another country's policies. If there's a loophole in the IWC mandate, then fix it. But wait...you anti-whalers haven't...well then quit complaining that whales are getting killed.

Obama is offering a tax-cut for people who make less than $250,000 a year. I can bet thats a pretty big chunk of the US population as some of us aren't so fortunate to drive around in nice little benz coupes. My friend told me today that his dad is supporting McCain because he said Obama would raise taxes on the rich. His dad makes over a half million a year and I'm sitting there shaking my head...

zurconium: Why the opposition to free speech?

Fact is, Palin won. Claiming otherwise is sexist.

rjdsr, I really hope you're being sarcastic. She lost, only the Republicans who have their heads up their bottoms are saying otherwise.

When conservatives before the debate say the only thing Palin needed to do was not mess up and "survive", theres something fundamentally wrong with that statement. Why would anybody supposedly qualified for VP need to just survive a debate? And why did she talk about taxes when that issue wasn't raised by the moderator? Its because she only has prepared statements that she has drilled into her head. What I found most concerning was that she stated she wanted to expand the VP's powers when that is definitely not necessary after the havoc Cheney brought. And basically at the end she said she wasn't going to bow into mainstream media pressure, she wasn't going to give any more interviews, she was going to ride the "Straight Talk Express"...why is that???? Because as her interview with Katie Couric showed, she is just plain not qualified for something as important as VP.

Good for Obama. He has stayed courteous and respectful throughout the campaign. Of course you can leave it to the Republicans to launch slanderous campaigns against their opponents. Wearing a flag pin? He supposedly didn't put his hand on his chest during the Pledge of Allegiance? Fox News said he got sworn in as a senator with a Quran? We all know these are all baseless and petty attempts to degrade Obama's character. I hope Americans choose wisely, not based on one's color or religious upbringing.

agreed. alot of my white friends base their opinions of asian women off of movies and those gravure idols you see online. but obviously this is not the case with people you meet while you live here. chances of you meeting a girl like in the picture above, are close to nil. theres always that small chance but its very small. i used to see lots of pretty girls in the US but nobody says that american girls are the greatest in the world...

whats the point of taspo if they dont check at the local 7-11? as long as you dont walk in with a high school uniform on, you can get cigarettes pretty easily. so if kids cant get their cigs from the vending machine, they just have to walk a couple more minutes and find a conbini and theyre set.

its good that he got the prefectural gov't to ban smoking on the streets but after living here for half a year, i can tell you that 75% of the people disregard these sorts of bans. i'm pretty sure its banned to smoke on the streets in tokyo (or is it just a "keep the streets clean from litter campaign?)...anyways theres signs everywhere telling people not to smoke while walking and to go to the designated smoking areas. but on a weekend night, its a crazy free for all...come to think of it...even on the weekdays

Posted in: 8-year-old girl drowns while trying to save brother in Kagoshima river See in context

I just have one thing to say. You can't expect parents to do everything. Kids have to learn certain things by themselves. For example, if this river in Kagoshima was flowing like the Niagara, a kid has to learn someday that its not a good idea to go near there. Based on your opinion, it seems like you have to supervise your children 24/7 for the first 8 or so years of their lives. And thats definitely not necessary.

um...well i wouldn't "let" my children play in a bath tub with a hairdryer. your comparison is a little exagerrated.

how do you know they couldn't swim? maybe they could, but the river current was just too strong? i got swept away by the current in hawaii body-boarding when i was a kid and the lifeguard had to save me. my parents weren't two feet away from me to save the day. Do you even have kids Jerome? I'm just wondering.

After reading this article, I have no sympathy for the author. If a police officer asks you of something, you comply. Its as simple as that.

Why was the author so paranoid if these "officers" were real police officers? If they were trying to take them to the station control room wouldn't that mean they're for real?

Also I have a hard time believing that these officers "grabbed" these people. Just yesterday I was approached by two officers in Shinjuku, and they reminded me it was forbidden to smoke while walking on the sidewalk. Then of course they searched me and my belongings, which as far as I know, is legal in Japan. (In the US they need reasonable doubt I believe) Anyways I complied and assured them I wasn't carrying a bomb or anything like that and I was let go after a couple minutes. Being Caucasian might be different, I don't know. Because I'm Japanese, the usual police stories I hear from my white friends never happen to me. Does a non-japanese have a similar experience?

I am surprised that many of these posts focus on "Japanese parents", as if other parents of different nationalities don't have this kind of problem. Also people on JT love to blow things out of proportion, quite frankly, and it gets annoying. There were probably thousands of kids playing today but it just so happened that a horrible accident occurred and people here immediately jump on the boat railing against "dumb" parents. I used to play with my brother unsupervised when I was a child and the worst I got was stitches. Parents can't supervise their kids for 4 hours while they run around outside. And for the smartasses who might reply, if you had a mom who could follow you around all day while you rode your bike or explored the neighborhood, good for you. Not all people are blessed with such circumstances.
