TCaesar: I would suggest that you avoid wherever the show offs hang out; probably the clubs and such, right? The women who go for those types know exactly what they want so you should be glad not to hook up with them. Trust me, those guys are probably doing you a favor. ;)

In terms of "volume level", I've heard that the Italians are considered to be pretty loud in Europe. When I was in France, it turned out to be true. It didn't bother me per se, but I was just surprised at the noise level.

I'd like to know if anyone qualifies this as bad behavior: I'm on a plane sitting next to an "Asian-looking" woman in her 50s. They serve the in-flight meal. She stops eating half-way through the meal and then starts brushing her teeth at her seat!! Now mind you, I'm still trying to eat while she's doing this. But the moment she started rinsing her mouth and spitting in her cup I just put down my fork and stopped.

Posted in: Obama: Money alone cannot solve U.S. school problems See in context

I think most of US schools should adopt some of the habits of the schools from the north eastern or new england section of the States. Even though I spent most of my school years on the west coast, I attended a few years on the east coast and noticed that when I went back to the west, I was way ahead of my classmates, especially in math, science, and computers. Students are also given a reading list for summer vacation and have to prepare book reports for the first day of school. The gap between the east and west just seems big.

US summer vacations are too long - period!

The teaching profession in the US doesn't get the respect it deserves.

Funny how people are able to blame everything on a President who's barely been in office for about two years. Granted, it's important to evaluate someone's performance midway through his or her term, but this is going a little far, no?

The Lehman Shock occurred back in October 2008, right? As well as all the activities that led up to it occurred well before Obama was in office, no?

He should have just sprayed shaving cream in her hand and then tickle her nose while video taping it and then upload it to Youtube. That would go viral.

Posted in: Poverty grows among Japan's young adults See in context

neogreenjapan - yes, I didn't want to come out and say Chinese specifically since there are also quite a few workers from other countries. But the majority do seem to be from China. But hey, power to them. It takes a lot of guts and effort to make it in a foreign country. I'm trying to do the exact same thing for crying out loud.

My take on the whole thing is that the young Japanese aren't inspired and aren't hungry enough anymore. Life is good as it is what with all the manga, playstations and Internet cafes. They can mooch off their parents and keep the money they earn for themselves to buy all the brand crap that they see in magazines.

I'm curious what others think and if there are any Japanese out there following this article, it'd be nice to hear from you as well.

When I saw her in Buzzer Beat, she was like every "boyfriends" dream, but when I saw her in the next drama with KimuTaku she became every "boyfriends" nightmare; could barely sit through the first episode.

I'm not sure if it's already been posted, but has anyone noticed the number of foreigners increasing in the lower-wage job bracket? At least in the Tokyo area, just about any convenience store, McDonalds, and Yoshinoya is staffed by young foreigners. Makes me wonder if there's going to be some kind of backlash later on by the Japanese complaining about how all the foreigners are taking their jobs because they're willing to work for much less and on a PT basis.... I'm curious to see how this plays out.

I think the convenience store "Flesh Sand" is a Japanese standard, but the one example that sticks in my mind is that of a diaper/bottle tote bag for infants called "Body Bag"....
