Posted in: Ireland swallows bitter pill, asks EU for loan See in context

Coming from Ireland myself,its heartbreaking to see what has happened to the entire country over the past few years culminating in this embarrassing loaning of money to get us by.The money will undoubtedly go to prop up the banks who are haemorrhaging cash as bad debts mount and depositors move their money elsewhere.The phrase "privatisation of profits and socialization of losses" sums up the situation at present as the ordinary person gets hits hardest in draconian budgets aimed at saving money to keep irish banks just about afloat.

@rockbuster no-one in their right mind would touch an irish bank with their debts.the irish government could not afford to let them go to the wall either as defaulting would result in evn worse situations in terms of future lending.Other major European banks are exposed for huge amounts in Ireland,especially british banks like RBS which owns Ulster Bank and Danske Bank which owns National Irish.

Posted in: European officials: No bailout yet for Ireland See in context

its funny how things like economics move in cycles..the same things repeat over and over again.in the early 80s ireland had soaring immigration and a basket case of an economy on the brink of bankrupcy.this time around following the boom of the celtic tiger its worse as the government enacts draconian austerity measures in budgets designed to claw back billions to cover mounting debts.the international bond markets wont be lending to ireland in the coming year after their credit ratings have been cut and with germany anxious to protect its own taxpayers first.This money is just needed by ireland for the day to day running of the country.Ireland has no other option but to accept a disastrous and extremely costly IMF/EU bailout.they have gone past the point of no return.

@timrussert

enacting austerity measures does not work... it will only stall any recovery.if george osbourne,the finance minister does this they will go the way of ireland who themselves are about to require help from the EU/IMF.Then,it really wont be such a Great Britain anymore.

@mrskit

i was watching the morning tv news last week and they were showing special gadgets gyaru can buy to do even basic tasks like opening a can of coke or buttoning up a jacket without breaking one of their elaborately decorated extremely long fake fingernails!kumi Koda could do with some. Also the fact that such a crap award has been around for 25 years and that other vacuous celebrities are associated shows how shallow some can be here.

why the hell are the cops laying out 3000 pairs of panties for a photo opportunity?this kind of thing is more suited to high profile drug busts where they show off bricks of cocaine worth a couple of million.are they proud of such an arrest?these police are a joke!does this count as real crime?

Posted in: Windfalls from soaring yen not necessarily passed on to consumers See in context

correct me if im wrong but the yen has steadily been gaining in value against other widely used currencies like euro and dollar for a couple of years and i would bet money that in that time little or no reductions on imported items has occurred.couldnt believe how expensive some things were at costco last time i went especially with the yen at such a high against the dollar.it should be cheaper now to buy stuff from abroad,right? Like someone else mentioned ill just keep my money and send it home to change back into euro..more money not being spent in the local economy..and they wonder why consumer spending is declining!

Posted in: Despite feeling the demands are unreasonable, the families tend to pay because they don't want people to know someone in their family committed suicide. As a result, they suffer doubly. See in context

i agree with stevecpfc this does seem highly insensitive and cold to be chasing compensation from a grieving family..worrying that is said to be excessive also.the landlords behaviour is an example of how business/money is put before people just as work comes before family in everyday life here in japan.

personally i wouldnt care if i stayed in a place where someone had committed suicide although i can appreciate others superstitions and uneasy feelings about doing so.unless a clause has been put into the lease when signed about compensation in event of suicide on said property surely there is no legal come back on some greedy landlord hounding for compo.

There definitely is a deliberate effort to come across as being ditzy,cute,childishly innocent..whatever you want to call it.if they are genuinely intelligent maybe they dont want to show up the guy by being smarter than him.sometimes when you say something that they dont understand they give you a look that my red setter gives me when he doesnt understand a command: the head tilted to one side with a blank expression on their face while their big brown eyes with look up at you,eyelashes fluttering...

@tamarama Of course theyre not all like that but when the article itself deals with generalisations then alot of our responses will sound like one.Judging by the content of alot of the 60 0dd comments so far alot tend to agree with listed generalisations above ,all based on personal experiences here in japan no doubt.

@tamarama, far away hills may look green to you..trust me alot of them are vapid,insipid,shallow,vain,one-dimensional future stepford wives.you need to appreciate the positives of some of the women in your own country like a decent sense of humour or not being afraid to put her point across or having the ability to have a decent conversation in the first place.

@cracaphat yeah youre right..think nishioka knew by round 7/8 that hed seen the best of what munroe could give..nishiokas hand speed and feet/movement were pretty impressive and too much for rendall.alot of times he just couldnt get close enough because of that..couldnt cut the ring fast enough to land some decent punches.

Basically when you read between the lines of points 1-10 you can sum up your average J-girl as being: 1.Image concious to a ridiculous degree. 2.Lacking individual opinion or taste..the collective "eeehhh"s and "kawaii"s are just one example in a long list of such behaviour.like sheep they follow each other in buying the latest fads/trends/fashions also. 3.See point2 4.If just boyfriend/girlfriend she might do this..if youve married one youll hear it alot more. 5.alot of students i used teach would always give the "go to shopping" answer when asked about hobbies. 6.you would think not having eyebrows would save time getting ready but if anything it gives them another excuse to buy yet more cosmetics. 7.vain beyond belief which is linked to how immature and insecure they can be. 8.wait till youre married! 9.see pt.7 10.that overpriced cake they just bought which a guy could eat in a bite could be filled with the greatest load of crap but as long as its decorated well with lots of swirls,ribbons and decorations,theyll buy it and take ages eating it.this could also sum up a j-girl..nice to look at but nothing on the inside.

You can never recreate the authentic taste of real curry,chili,thai curry etc.. when in a foreign country.Either they adapt to the locals particular tastes as many have comented or the right ingredients cant all be found. Even if you go the original countries on holidays you need to go where the locals go to because once again if you stick to where all the other tourists are going the food will not be as good either. Who is to say what "real" thai curry or mexican chilli etc..should taste like anyway?Every single restaurant will taste different.

living on your own can be good for some people,especially some of these japanese who have lived at home for most of their lives...having mom and dad still doing everything for you short of wiping your ass can turn people into lazy,helpless and immature individuals.thats why married life for some of these is too much of a shock to the system...how can they be expected to look after kids or a partner if they cant look after themselves?
