Posted in: 8 things you should never say to a Japanese person See in context

I can relate. Since I'm from Seattle, the first comments from Japanese people are usually "Mariners!" and "Ichiro!" followed shortly thereafter by "Starbucks!" and sometimes even an "Amazon!" or "Microsoft!" for good measure.

Sure, it gets old, but hey... if it's the only icebreaker someone can think of, I'll just roll with it.

Why do they always have to make gimicky crap?

Get's people in the door. You and I don't have to like it, but take a look around and you'll see that it works for businesses here.

Of course they are small. I wouldn't say they are value for money. I'd rather pay 1000yen for a real burrito.

I agree, but we men are not the target audience, so it seems like a reasonable strategy. Plus, the business people working in and around the Marunouchi Building are making bank, so I can't imagine that pricing will be much of a problem.

Because shopping is the opiate of the sheeple...

Ouch. Almost cut myself on that edge.

Brown bubbly sugar-water about to become even more overpriced that it already is in Japan.

Why is it so profitable here? Less soda competition compared with the US?

Posted in: For some women, husband's death like a breath of fresh air See in context

Interesting article. A shame the quoted widows did not feel free until after their spouses died.

However, would Mr. A in the article really change in any significant way after reading it? After he dies he may not really care how much fun his wife will have since he has apparently been fairly oblivious to her feelings thus far.

This really is wave of the future stuff right here. If this becomes proven tech and eventually catches on, paying for parking could provide added value with some charging included. Quite an interesting concept.

Posted in: No trace of 7 Japanese divers missing off Bali See in context

This forum needs a generous dose of Occam's razor.

As "mysterious" as this may seem to some here, tragedies can and do happen. This was a terrible tragedy, almost certainly nothing more sinister than that. The awesome power of the ocean can be unforgiving, even for the highly experienced.

A lot of negative Nancies here today. Must everything be constantly ridiculed?

If people enjoyed watching the game (and obviously many did), accept it and move on.

What a tragedy it would be to witness your spouse killed before you. I can't even imagine. Very sad story indeed.

On another note, the printed story here is literally six sentences, leaving many blanks left to be filled in. I always wonder what it is about the JT comments section that brings out all the armchair detectives with the wildest of theories, though. Sometimes a home invasion gone wrong is just a home invasion gone wrong.

AKBfan

Still only representsa the opinion of a tiny fraction of Japanese women. My guess in the high 90 percents wouldn't even consider dating a foreigner......

This is probably true. At the same time, we foreigners are an even tinier fraction of the population, so the odds are still pretty good. At least anecdotally speaking, there never seems to be any issue finding Japanese people interested in meeting us foreigners, so....

Strangerland

the idea that 'wife wants to be a housewife' = bad wife, isn't as cut and clear as some would like to think.

Spot on, my friend. Excellent post.

Go Hawks! Seatown FTW.

Regardless, it should be a great game either way. :D

Does NHK broadcast the Super Bowl?

Came for the expected JT forum negativity, leaving satisfied. Thanks for never disappointing.

That being said, I sincerely admire this guy's passion in accomplishing his goals. His fans seem to enjoy his music and performances. That's all that really matters, people.

I also believe it's barbaric, don't get me wrong, Thunderbird. At the same time, it's not my prerogative to impose my views on them.

If they stop, it will have to be because they choose to; outside pressure will only keep having the opposite effect.

From what I understand, popes are allowed to state their opinions, which is what Francis was doing. That being said, his opinion carries a huge amount of weight, of course.

Papal infallibility only extends to infallible declarations, which are extremely rare: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papal_infallibility#Instances_of_infallible_declarations
