Furthermore, that’s one beauty of our experiment, that people can and choose to live together according to their nationality, race, interests, etc. It works. A lesson for Western Europe I guess.

No FizzBitt,

I think you might be taking an 'old world' view on this. American's mix, we fall in love with eachother, marry have children. Been happening for generations. My two daughters are:

French, German, Scottish, English, Croix Indian, Dutch, Spanish, African, Indonesian, Chinese and Taino Indian.

This does not make America better, my country was robbed, raped, enslaved, etc. by numerous Colonial powers. Today, we are trying to figure it out. It's ugly but we are not shy or ashamed about making progress.

San Francisco has a China Town where if you don't speak Cantonese then you're out of luck in a lot of shops. Also, Spanish is the dominate language in a lot of places: Many cities in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Florida, etc. What about Puerto Rico?

I'm from San Francisco and our city government creates instructions in English, Spanish, Chinese as a baseline and many forms are also available in Russian and Vietnamese because we have a significant community there.

This does not make Japan bad. America has it's own history and because if it, it's a very diverse place. I'm a mix of seven nationalities and that's not a lot.

America seems to be our best human hope of seeing eachother as 'fellow humans' but with that said, America is less than 300 years old and still struggles with it's colonial past.

I suspect most Americans want pluralistic society, where the people in it believe all kinds of different things and tolerate each other's beliefs even when they don't match their own. This of course is the very opposite of many other societies.

Pluralism is the engagement that creates a common society from all that diversity.  America is working toward this and has a huge head start. Diversity in Japan, LOL.

USA is by far the largest economy in the world at around 21 Trillion. The US economy is so big that the state of California is the 4th/5th biggest economy in the world and Texas is the 10th/11th. Think about it... USA dominance is not going anywhere, it's truly a country of business and humans flock from all over the world for a piece of the American Pie. Politics is good theatre but in the USA it's always about the money.

US bonds and US state municipal bonds should bev a part of your investment portfolio. A lot of money is running at them as the trade war(s) at uncertainty to markets.

Just silly to predict the US economy will fail and if it did, that this would be good for any human on the planet.

Debt is fake, the money in the USA is in private hands. The USA could make changes to it's tax system and eliminate the debt.

The United States has occupied both Japan and South Korea since the end of WWII. Both the Japanese and South Korean economies are completely dependent on shipment of the things they produce to the USA. @ Henny Penny

Your comments are simply not true but that's OK.

Ibuprophen is an over the counter drug in both the US and Japan. I know what 12 tablets cost in Japan.

AND, how exactly is it better that imported is more expensive? LOL, all Japanese beers are sold in the US. I CAN BUY a six pack of Sapporo for under 800 yen in San Francisco. LOL, thats 6.99 USD.

California farmers grow an abundance of rice and... it's delicious and inexpensive BUT in the USA food is not just for the wealthy. We eat strawberries, tomatoes, avocados, mangos, rice, bread, beef, etc. All the time!

Japanes shoppers are screwed, living in a fixed system that rewards inflated profits.

Posted in: Major Japanese companies pessimistic about economy: survey See in context

The slow death of a closed economic model has strapped the Japanese workers to ridiculous work hours, poor production and artificially inflated prices that can no longer be supported by the salaries they recieve. In Japan, 200mg of Ibuprophen cost 123 yen a pill, in the USA, same pill cost 2 yen a pill and I can do this with everything. Profit margins are ridiculous in Japan. Average USA grocery store operates on a 2-3% margin, in Japan 23-24% margin AND very limited food choices!

Consumers here are lousy shoppers and have a built in nationalism in their thinking, which of course would change in a second if the economy was opened up. 200mg of Ibuprophen is just that, no one makes it better...

Constant consumption. More, more, more... We humans are sort of ridiculous. So, I get it. This is good news for the economic system we feed and let's all be happy that people bought more crap!

Sorry but what I took away from this article is that 'nothing' is changing and maybe this is not so good for improving the likelihood that the earth will continue to sustain our existence. Hmmm... I guess that's a different issue? New TV's vs conscious decisions about creating pollution. Yep, TV's won again.

System is rigged to keep all the money in Japan so wages really don't matter much. When Japanese people decide they want 'freedom' of choice then prices will go down and salary spending power will increase. Example: Ibuprophen 200mg in Japan 125 yen a pill, USA 2 yen a pill. Can of beer in Japan, 200 yen, USA 400 yen buys you six beers. I can do this all day....
