Yes, it's for the betterment of Japan, so we must agree. Maybe, just maybe, I can see their logic but it is pathetic all the same.

On a sarcastic note, they should have been a little more creative and sold Fukushima 'glow sticks'.

Nothing new with big corporations in Japan. Seems as though this sort of stuff is happening on a weekly basis, along with the deep bow, apologise for the 'confusion', and then continue on as normal.

More Americans might care about the ceremony if the actors didn’t spend so much time insulting them for their voting decisions.

Sorry, but look who people chose as a President. Certainly need some chastising. ;-) As for the Academy Awards, for me, mostly a bunch of self-congratulatory, over indulgent w*^%$#^s congratulating themselves.

Agree, nothing beats gas. Instant and controlable... mind you, love cooking on a real charcoal grill, something that gas cannot compare to for flavour.

statistic show that on average life time smokers die about 14yrs earlier than non smokers but not mainly from cancer as many would assume but respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, like emphysema and strokes from hardening of the capillaries

Very true. This is how my mother died. She smoked her entire life!

Yet, my great grandfather, grandmother lived well into their late 90s, both 2 and 3 pack a day smokers respectively...

Don't get me wrong.... but why is the Japan Dairy Ind. Assoc., making this statement? Shouldn't a Government Organization make it.

So they can find some minor fault with it, declare it as unsafe, and continue on with its protectionist practices.

Posted in: Japan gives green light to liquid baby formula sales See in context

Totally agree. Not that hard to put however many level spoons of formula into the appropriate amount of water. Had to do it every night for all three kids, wife suffered from mastitis on all three occasions. Just like making a cup of coffee. But then again, generations thought differently, certainly were not a lot of fathers that helped around the home back in the 'good ol days.'

Posted in: Japan to require airlines to accommodate wheelchair users from Oct See in context

What airline? It was a directive from the government. If you are referring to Vanilla , they told the man he could not board because of lack of equipment.

It should be mandatory now. The Japan government wants to be seen as a progressive one, yet it has taken them until they get the Olympic Games to finally get their butt moving. If it wasn’t for that, these poor guys would still be sitting on the tarmac.

It'd be a great idea. Used to love daylight saving in Tas.... get home from school, as I got older - work, throw on the wettie and surf till 9:00-9:30 some nights.... Bit spooky at times, but certainly was a lot healthier both physically and mentally back then.

And that's the sort of attitude that creates a suicide rate of around 30,000 per year. There is no shame in showing emotion whether it be happiness, anger, love or sadness. Yamato forever huh?

Whilst I understand your point, they know it is a dangerous even life taking situation, these guys are providing an invaluable service to the public. I have a lot of respect for guys like these who put themselves out there in the thick of things to bring us news, real news - not just the government sanctioned variety, to inform and educate society on conflicts like these.

Anyway, it's a pretty dull event so it doesn't bother me much.

Maybe for you, not for others. For me, who once swam at national level, it's pretty exciting stuff. I would love to be there for the 50, 100 free and 100, 200 breaststroke. As Yubaru said, Japan is world class when it comes to swimming and they would love to see it live on the box. There are a lot of sports I consider dull, so I don't watch them.

Posted in: Heatwave blankets much of Japan, killing 14 people over long weekend See in context

Because Northern Australia doesn't have the same humidity that Japan does. The heat is much less deadly when it's not so humid, as one can somewhat escape it by getting into some shade, and/or putting on the right clothes. The humidity cannot be escaped - I usually sweat a little even in air conditioning in Japan due to the humidity.

Ever been up the top end of Aus? Obviously not! Japan is cool by comparison.

@Kaishu: well, if Japanese people are very proud of this match, they are right. The Italian tv commentators were shocked by the amazing way Japan played as well. Japan showed to be one of the best teams in this WC despite being an underdog.

Yeah, they should be proud. Ganbare takes it to extremes on every topic that Japan is involved in.

Great game and kudos to Japan for getting so far. Well played by both sides.

Blue Samurai should have won the game at the end. They almost shocked the World again. Honda almost scored and finished Belgian.

Should have and didn't are two totally different things. Stop with the whole over the top nationalistic pride.....
