Posted in: LDP education proposal includes TOEFL prerequisite for univ entrance See in context

absurd idea... TOEFL is just another point system test. I got more than 100 in TOEFL iBT without being able to speak fluent English. There are certain patterns in that test like TOEIC. If they introduced TOEFL into university entrance exams, most students would focus only on how to get good score in TOEFL, not on how to use good English. It must be a wast of time... What they should think about is not to introduce another difficult test, but to how to teach writing and speaking English.

I also think that while writing and reading must be useful, listening and speaking skills are not necessary for most Japanse. I've never had any English conversation in Japan.

A lot of members of the team Netherlands come from Curaçao and Aruba, not mainland. The team Italy has some Americans. So, it might not be true to say "Europe can produce good baseball teams"

@Jamie Lunel

This article is written by an American news service. I'm not sure, but in the US 19 years old is considered adult, right? There isn't the double standard here. Can you find any Japanese news service actually releasing his name?

It was tough. Brazil was stronger than I thought.

TigersTokyoDome it's surprising. But, Korea this time does not have any MLB players in its team. Like Japan, they are not as strong as they were last time.

I am wondering why they want to come to Japan in the first place. I think Japan is not so interesting place to visit. I cannot find anything special for Japan. Only thing you cannot see the similar thing in other countries is Otaku stuff or terribly busy trains?

Posted in: British Council aims to improve English language proficiency in Japan See in context

Since most Japanese will never talk with other foreigners in English, there is no need for them to be able to do so. Being able to read and write English is enough for Japanese living in Japan. The current grammar-centric study is not so bad because grammar is the most helpful for non-native to become able to read and write the language.

IELTS is a good test, but there are not so many differences from TOEFLiBT and EIKEN. Only few will take IELTS, instead of wildly-accepted TOEIC and TOEFL. Probably, they should show why IELTS is superior to TOEFL.

That's fine. Most Japanese cant understand what a title means in English. It is good idea to let them know a clear sense of the show. I guess this kind of translation has been done in many countries other than Japan.

Posted in: Do you think the curfew on U.S. military personnel in Japan is a good idea? See in context

Curfew itself would resolve nothing. They have to realize they have a special status and have to behave in a especially civilized manner. I would like them to be happy in Okinawa. Setting the curfew and banning alcohol should be temporary.

Just a difference of tastes. There are a lot of things which is popular in Japan but not in other world and vice versa. Why do they think it must be popular in Japan? I've never seen this, but it is sung by Korean language, right? K-pop singers which are popular in Japan generally sing in Japanese. I guess it is also a reason.

Posted in: French broadcaster apologizes to Japan over Fukushima gag See in context

I lived Sendai near Fukushima. But I did not get angry at the French broadcaster mainly because it did not come as a surprise. I knew many people around European football like to do something like that.

But I found it funny that when Japanese comedians imitated Nazi costume and salute, and were reprimanded by German or Jewish rights organization several years ago, about 80% of people in JT also criticized Japan, saying insensitive, too stupid or not knowing history. Then, when France made fun of the tragedy in Japan, people in JT are criticizing Japan. I think in both case, they did not try to insult the victims and Jewish generally do not watch such a Japanese TV program. I wish people here criticized German or Jewish rights organization if Japanese did it again, saying there are cultual differences or how childish they are.

Posted in: It’s never too late to change bad chopsticks-holding habits See in context

In a survey conducted by Meiji University of 8,000 people, it was found that only a third of people in their 30s were using chopsticks correctly. They also found almost the same statistic for 40 to 50-year-olds, showing that the correct usage of chopsticks is declining yearly.

Is that really true? I believe I can use chopsticks correctly and most of my friends can do. If that is the case, what I think as right usage of chopsticks would be wrong.

Posted in: Why the Japanese have no problem asking about your marital status See in context

I dont see the issue there. What you say sounds like saying it is annoying that many americans call me by my first name when we first meet in the US and they should not do like that. I feel being called by my first name is more intrusive than asked about my age or something. It's very rude in Japan, but it is not considered rude in the US, right? If I really hate to be called by my first name, I can ask them not to do so later. It's also possible for you to avoid answering and later tell them not to do so. It is just a cultual difference, isn't it? It is not the matter of should or should not.

They are very usual questions in Japan. Japanese asks not only foreigner but also Japanese about them, probably because it really depends on her/his age and status how to deal with a person.

Posted in: Ford asks steep price for Japan to join TPP talks See in context

I think Japan has offered an environment in which foreign makers can be flourish, and there aren't such big obstacles as they said. Then why do you think European makers like BMW, Mercedes, and Audi are so popular in Japan? Most Japanese consider having a car made by foreign maker especially European is a kind of a status symbol.

American makers not only Ford have already had bad image in Japan. I don't know well about recent Ford's cars, but their cars are regarded as fuel-consuming, too big, and not confortable. Also preference on cars is very different between Japanese and Americans. Japanese people don't like to have a sort of wild cars. If you seriously want to be flourish, how about thinking of creating new cars which suit for Japan's market, not just exporting their cars. Many Japanese makers have produced cars only for foreign markets to penetrate in the markets.

Multiculturalism is one of the concepts.Promoting multiculturalism might be a great idea to encourage diversity, which is often beneficial for the development of a country. But, a country does not like to promote it. It's no problem. It's their way to go. Of course, violence and discrimination against foreigners should not occur in the country. But, I think there is no obligation for all countries to promote multiculturalism.
