I love coffee therefore not a big fan of Starbucks especially since they teamed up with Monsanto. However 700 yen for a coffee is way too much, especially if this is the entry price for a "standard" coffee.

I think manga is depriving young people of the pleasure of reading real literature.

How? Please elaborate here, in that case same goes with movies, TV, video games, etc... People will eventually get to literature some sooner than other. Actually thanks to manga kids are actually reading.

now the tax payer and everyone else in Japan has to

Are you American? Bringing up the tax payer to the story? Really?? Which burden will you bear, paying for a spot in an asylum or death row? Wow such a burden mate.

What a selfish coward. Are you serious there? I think it's more like "my child is a monster" can you put yourself in his boots for one second? What would you do instead? Pay the girl's family, pray, cry, something else? His life was over the moment his teenage girl committed the unthinkable. What's the point living with it, will it ease the pain of the other girl's family? Will you tax be lowered...

Wow lot of you guys seems to totally forget that living with this on your conscience as a father must be unbearable , whether you are a samurai or not. How can you look at yourself in the mirror after your kid does such a horrible thing? Of course he lived in a different place, of course he remarried but he asked help from psychiatrist too. What can you do, wake up every morning and live with it? It does not solve anything but what his to be solved anyway? This girl will never get better, she does not understand basic feelings anymore, love is far from the solution here... Sad story with tragic ending.

Posted in: Tokyo pulls plug on late-night Roppongi-Shibuya bus service See in context

There should be a 24h city bus service at least connecting big hubs and main stations on the outskirt of the city especially on weekends. Why don't they do it? Every big city in Europe has a night bus service or at least late trains in the week end. In Tokyo either you party until 11:30PM or 6:00AM as a taxi ride home could easily cost you more than 6,000Y.

In a previous comment you said

has a cat less life value than a dog, be consistent if you want thumbs up!

Posted in: Akie Abe joins gay parade See in context

There is really no need for one to come out as gay or straight. It is a choice we make individually.

I don't think it's a choice you make it is just who you are, born this way if I may say so. It's not like you wake up one day and say:"That's it, I'm gay now! Because I chose it"

Went to Matsuya Ginza with the wife as she "had to" buy chocolates for the brother in law and even nephew??? Oh boy what a mistake there was this chocolates fair, impossible to walk, only excited girls buying buying buying like headless chicken... I can help but to be cynical at this time of the year in Japan. Go Japan, spend your cash! It seems the only way of life for most of you guys.

Well that's is another good free party spot gone. Japan does love killing the fun especially when it is free. With an aging population it's not gonna get better. Ban on tattoo, ban on dancing, ban on drinking, ban on music, what's next ban on being young?

This movie might actually make some money in Japan with all the aggressive marketing and Disney related placement! Does not matter if it is good or bad if talentos say it's good people will follow! Haven't seen the movie yet so hard to judge but seems pretty bad.

Posted in: Why do Japanese work such long hours? See in context

I worked in a Kaisha 2 years and the main reasons have stated in the comments, but one thing I witnessed was that they sleep at their desk to show exhaustion from work. So basically 2 hours asleep means they have to stay at leas 2 hours after standard working hours. And also it is considered bad to leave before your boss and as most of time the boss has a boring life waiting for him back home he just seats there surfing the web or reading news paper while the other workers are dying to get home or out.

I feel so blessed to have grown up in Europe where we have nice gardens and playgrounds to play with our friends and even houses with gardens if we are lucky enough and not living in big cities. Where I only see concrete playgrounds right next to the road with sometime heavy traffic in in Tokyo, not even grass or sand boxes... I feel sorry for the kids, the environment is really not fit to play around with your friends. Oh and of course we were always being watched over by parents

Posted in: Have Japan’s anti-smoking laws gone too far? See in context

Great discussion points here. I sometimes wonder if the pro-smokers are the same people as the pro-whalers? Both disrespect life and are completely self-serving in their "reasons".

I think you forgot to say that "we" (I am a smoker, dirty dirty killing selfish smoker) also are racist, pro death, homophobic, or whatever else... are you out of your mind Ranger_Miffy2 ??? I am shocked from what I read from most anti-smokers... You are a menace to society all of you, what do you want to jail us? Put us in camp? Ban us from cities? Hitler would not have had any better ideology than you guys. Thanks you stressed me up I need a smoke!

Please, kill yourself as you feel like, it's your rights to do so, but make sure not a single whiff of stench comes my way in the process. It's my right to enjoy clean air.

You probably do not live in Tokyo, if so please let me know where you've found clean air.

You can pick any western celebration they have in Japan and the result is the same, they take the spirit away to turn it into a capitalist/commercial event: Halloween=no trick or treats, Xmas=couple date night, Valentine=chocolate industry booster, they even have thanksgiving...
