Posted in: Seismologists warn gov't against restarting nuclear reactors See in context

My gut feeling's telling me it's not gonna end good - the restart of the reactors.....

But you know, if looking at fro manother angle: Japan is an island, nuclear energy is the cheapest here, but it's still not cheap at all (just look at your energy bills at home). If they choose a hydro-power plant it might do serious harm to nature and Japan doesn't have that many rivers to begin with.

But then again, nuclear plants are probably one of the most dangerous things.

So it kind of depends on how you look at it.

But I'm personally against restarting any of the reactors. Well, maybe only in Shizuoka, since there can't be a tsunami there? But if putting safety first, then I'm totally against nucear stuff.

Posted in: Russia's Medvedev to visit disputed Kuril isles See in context

@YuriOtani:

The Kurils are living happily without belonging to Japan, and I'm really curious what its inhabitants would say if asked what country they'd prefer - Japan or Russia. I somehow think they wouldn't want to change their nationality. [espcially seing the tax hike which will come to life really soon].

Declining population? Isn't Japan the one with the fastest declining population with one fifth of it being old people? In a 1000 years? Are you sure Japan will still exist in 1000 years with its growing old trends?

If we start taking about "taken by force", then should I bring up the Kwantung Army which did whatever it wanted and is probably the embodiment of violence, greed and horror during the Sino-Japanese war and how it triggered the war itself by participating in the Mukden Incident? Or maybe I should also mention how the Japanese wanted to take Manchuria for its natural resources but couldn't do it peacefully, so had to do it cunningly and trigger the war by making the Chinese at fault here?

Or should we start talking about the Japanese government which is probably the most ridiculous government I've seen recently with prime minsters and the cabinet being changed like women's gloves? The government that thinks that everything can be solved and the rsponsibility can be taken just by apologizing. And the citizens' trust level towards the government decreasing rapidly.

The more I read about the politics the easier it is to compare various governemnts, beit the US, Russia, Japan, France, Greece, the UK, Germany, Italy, etc. All governments have their own flaws, sometimes big, sometimes not, but Japanese government looks really amateur. They're more concerned about illegal downloads, their income and not even their own islands, rather than making their country a safer place in case a disastrous earthquake starts.

You seem to close your eyes on what goes on in Japan, while blindly pointing out the flaws of other countries. It's not patriotism, you know.

And honestly speaking, we're a civilized community now (more or less), how long are we gonna continue on deciding what land belongs to whom? Just like barbarians, jeez.

Actually the Japanese have never accepted Ainu, meaning they have never thought of them as Japanese, so hence al lthe consequences of wiping the Ainu out so just that the Japanese could live happily. And in fact, I've heard more bad cases concerning Ainu people while those islands belonged to Japan than when they became owned by the Soviet Union. I'm Russian, but I can't say I'm a patriot, probably my whole generation is not, because nowadays our country doesn't include that in our upbringing. But I can easily see that Japan lost here in the past and now it's shamefully trying to get back what it lost due to its own foolishness, it's like a coward trying to steal back something that he lost in a fair fight. Those islands now belong to Russia, and I don't think that people living on those islands would be happy to suddenly belong to another country.

And btw, just imagine what's gonna happen to the Kuril people if Japan gets those islands. Ainu case much?

I don't dislike Japan, nor do I like or dislike Russia, it's just how I see it.

@Harry_Gatto

Well, the winner takes it all. Japan lost, and what's more it was with the NAZI. I'm very neutral when it comes to politics and stuff. But anyone who thinks Nazi is okay is touched in the head.

I wonder if Japan thinks it has gained the right to take over the Kurils?

Posted in: Russia's Medvedev to visit disputed Kuril isles See in context

The Japanese lost those islands due to their own fault. They did lose in war, so the Soviet Union took those islands. And if I'm not mistaken there ARE some documents that prove that, however, Japan basically had no say in that since it lost.

I find it really stupid that they've started making a fuss about it only recently seeing that the whole thing happened almost 70 years ago. Japan certainly has no better things to do other than try to buy new land or "get back their own land". It's really stupid.

Speaking of reasning, I've NEVER heard Japan name at least one legitimate reason - why they should get the Kurils back. The only thing I hear or read about them is "The Japanese expressed regret" and blah blah blah. Where are their reasons? The reason "it's our land!" is ridiculous and childish, it's not a reason.

I wonder if any Japanese people actually read the news on this website, because I'm pretty sure that they are 100% blindly "for" taking the Kuril islands back.

I dunno, I find the whole dispute really childish and I think that Russia kinda smirks at Japan's remarks, that's why they're not really reacting to it. Because it's really ridiculous.

Japan has even established a national holiday called "The Day of the Northern Territories"! It made me lol really hard.

What's the cause of such attacks? And how come no one saw this and why didn't the crowd react to this? I'm sure it was obvious what happened, at least when the woman started bleeding. Or did everyone pretend they saw nothing and it was not their business?

I feel bad for the woman, hope she recovers soon. Piled up frustration again, huh? It's funny how for 2432434324th time it proves that the Japanese don't value life, neither their own nor others'.

Posted in: Parents of ex-Aum fugitive Naoko Kikuchi apologize See in context

You can't say whether what Kikuchi's parents did is a good or a bad thing. It's their choice, she's their daughter. At least I hope they issued an apology because they love her, not because of how society views them.

I understand that you must look at it from the Japanese's point of view, but still, why is the way they're viewed by others so important? And don't say Confucianism here, because I highly doubt that parents think of confucianism every time they have to issue an apology. I mean, I know there are special historical reasons and such, but why won't they even try a tiny bit to change it? Afterall, it hasn't brought any good to anyone from what I've seen and heard.

I personally think it feels better to be a gaijin in Japan than to be a native Japanese, because there's just too much pressure. The society that seems to be so well developed with awesome traditions, seems to nurture its worst traditions and habits more than any other.

And they also seem to think that their "sumimasen" will always work, be it nuclear bomb or a sarin gas attack.

I kind of do understand the way the Japanese think, but just thinking about it makes me feel pressured @_@

Posted in: Japan's birth rate stays flat See in context

Hmm, do they count the killed children as well? Japan's population itself wouldn't even raise their own children, even though they have so few. Why would anyone expect the birthrate to rise? I see the news of kids being killed/almost killed by their parents or negligent strangers all the time, it's not even funny anymore.

The article says they're kinda against a lot of foreigners coming to Japan, so they're sorta against foreigners but accept a lot of originally English words into their speech and enjoy American stuff. Are they scared that foreigners would be way too competetive in jobs with them or something? What's the problem anyway?

I think they're pretty biased for such a developed country.

The birth rate will remain flat as long as they continue not doing ANYTHING about it. They keep on saying they'll do their "utmost best" but apparently their "utmost best" is kinda sucky.

I'm sorry for being so categoric, but the Japanese don't seem to know how to solve more or less unusual problems.

Oh and yeah, this comment has been removed by moderators as"off-topic". I wonder which part of it is (I know added more text to it now). I'm bashing the Japanese just for the sake of bashing, I'm just becoming more and more disappointed how the Japanese can't handle problems, because such a TIIINY birth rate is really a problem.

Errr.... lol? Dejavu? Or what? I read the news about a parent killing thier child everyday here. Japan, hello? Maybe you should become more mature already?

Poor child. But yeah, I wonder if the man is somehow involved. But then again, if the woman is still alive, there'd be a spossibility she could tell if it was him. I doubt it was him.

Depression is just the result of weakness and subconscious desire to be showered with self-loathing, so to speak.

No matter what you call it. Only those that are not strong-willed suffer depression. I've endured a lot of things from witnessing my grandmother's death with my own eyes, my father hitting me and my mother, him cheating on my mom, uncle sick with HIV because he cheated on my aunt. Maybe it's not as horrible as other people have it, but I managed to become what I am and live where I am now only thanks to myself. I don't respect people that put themselves down and take others down with them.

So I can't take the excuse for this murder as depression.

This guy's not as capable as Hitler. But he's still dangerous. Anyone like that would be dangerous if he had a lot of power. The Japanese just don't have the "golden middle" or so to speak. They have either passive politicians or overly active ones, none of them is reasonable. Well, Noda's not THAT bad. He's just taking things at his own pace but I don'tthink he's a bad PM for now.

And Hashimoto's building an army of his own, that's right. The guy that originated his fame from the tv shows.... Imagine any dude from the reality show in America to become... .say, the mayor of Washington. lol LOL.

The reason the Japanese have this kind of politicians is partially due to their mentality.

I suspect it's that kind of people that for some reason chose her as their target (For some sick reason), and kinda cut off all the possible escape routes for her, even removing her license plates and pretending as if she was still alive by sending emails. This is sick.

Once again, the child dies, the parent fails to commit suicide. successfully. Is it just me or it's at least the 4th case of a parent killing their kid for the past two weeks?

This is ridiculous. This father was just another weak coward.

Poor child. Instead of caring about her, he was only thinking about himself.

Posted in: Woman kills three children and herself in charcoal-burning murder-suicide See in context

Agree with people above. This happens waaaaaay too often in Japan. Its population is getting older and older, and they're killing their own kids, be it a murder, a suicide or an accident (like that one when mother killed her kid with the car accidentally).

And to use this kind of torture-like tool - charcoal burner. Parents in Japan seem to find more and more unusual tools to kill their children.

Poor kids, and three of them! It must be pure horror for their grandmother...

Oh come one. Shoving is an everyday occurence in major cities, especially in the subway. People grumble, get into arguements or simply silently do their thing, but it's NOT the the first time someone was stabbed/injured because of this in Japan. I remember there was an accident not long ago (I think in Tokyo too) when one woman stabbed another because she "didn't like how that woman looked at her"..... WHUT?

Why arethey so violent? Even though the crime level is very low, the average citizens themselves do more crime than in other countries. And why in the world do so many people carry knives?

Posted in: Police meet to discuss anti-stalker measures See in context

@valued_Customer.

But you know, in the majority of cases the victims know the name of the person stalking them, because they've met them before (it's not always true, but mostly). So at least the police can come up to this person and at first orally tell them to stop disturbing the victim.

About the "he said.she said" aspect. Aren't all witnesses like that? Basically the trials are based not only on evidence but also on testimonies, and testimonies can be a lie, so unfortunately such subjective things still count in our modern society.

Besides, the police doesn't realize that stalking is becoming a very serious issue in Japan (honestly speaking, I don't understand what's going on in stalkers' heads). Well, maybe only now after a few murders.

Why is stalking in Japan so common? What's the point of it anyway? I've never heard of any stalkers or stalking cases here in my country.

Wow, I kind of liked him at first when he positioned himself as a very active and modern leader and won the elections. But what he's doing is beyond ridiculous.

It's clearly illegal, Japan or not Japan, such things are illegal everywhere. But the Japanese won't take action against it unless they get enough people to stand against this guy, becausr the Japanese can't do anything on their own.

This is hilarious. Only in this country could this happen. Try this stunt anywhere else and the only person getting fired would be the nut job Mayor. Who cares if a person has tattoo's? Really as long as they do their job who really cares. Oh sorry l forgot this is Japan where there is massive stigma about having them....

This, 100% agree with this. Enough said. Oh and yeah, mods tend to remove a lot of comments that bash Japan, so that you know.

AKB's incredibly generic, it's a band from the 20th century when Backstreet Boys, Boyzone and Spice Girls were unbelievably popular. Why is it so popular in the first place? All the girls look the same anyway. It's not the group's fault that this happened, but how nuts Japanese fans are? I hear this happen a lot more often in Japan than in other countries (although there are some pretty nasty stories of American fans as well).

But personally to me AKB looks like your generic K-pop band, there are dozen of them, and they're all the same, so choose whatever you want - all thesongs are the same anyway.
