Posted in: When you drink coffee or tea in Japan, do you prefer the chains like Starbucks, Tully’s, Doutor, etc, or do you prefer the traditional “kissaten?” See in context

Having your own espresso machine is fine, but even more important is having an excellent burr grinder so you can grind the beans just before brewing. Too bad they're so expensive. I think Seattle has to be one of the best places for coffee, and I don't just mean Starbucks, Tullys or Seattles Best Coffee. There are hundreds of coffee places in the city - naturally all smoke free.

When folks talk about Trump and human rights, it seems to me they are being extremely naive in saying let them all in regardless of the fact that there is no proof as to who they really are. Extreme vetting only makes sense.

Trumps' comments about the media being 'biased' ( to put it politely ) are obviously true. I'm so glad we don't have 'crooked Hillary' ( to put it mildly ) in his place. We ( Americans ) have a chance that he might improve things in the country. I wish him luck.

As a financially tight American ex-pat from Seattle, I'll let those young hip Japanese spend their 4200 yen on a fashion accessory that provides no function greater than a suica etc card. Starbucks has always seemed to be a very well managed company.

Competition is a good thing! They're both two of the best Japan has to offer. I hope to see them soon in Sapporo for the Asian Winter games.

She is really an exceptional athlete, and on top of that appears to be a very mature young lady - considering she is only 20, I wish more athletes would be like her. I hope to see her in Sapporo at Okura soon.

Sport superstars will perform in Qatar, a country with horrendous treatment of women, but Hollywood celebs won't perform for Trump - seems like kind of a double standard. Trump bashing is PC but accepting some middle eastern treatment of women etc is ok.

jpn_guy articulated many of my thoughts on this matter. He obviously is not listening to 'outside' consultants otherwise the entire name of 'cool Japan' would have been changed. He is really not the right guy for the job - and that's the most polite thing I can say about him.

A Very impressive young Japanese girl - actually a Very impressive person - period. It was good to hear her reporting how she sort of ignored the negativity from the adults who were just the opposite of supporting her extra-ordinary goals. Well-done young lady!

Posted in: What do you think of when you hear the words "Cool Japan?" See in context

The way the marketing people use the word 'cool' is really so out of date - to put it politely. There are many exceptional things about Japan - but I would not describe them as 'cool'; it's as if the marketing people are from the early 20th century.

You don't have to accept the fact that Japanese wives often control the paychecks. For me that is beyond unacceptable. I'm an American married to a Japanese wife. We both tend to spend our money as wisely as possible.

Posted in: Thousands march in U.S. cities against Trump presidency See in context

The behavior of the few violent protesters is probably just adding resolve to those who voted for Trump. Protesting itself is great, it's very American, but at some point you need to figure out how to move forward, not just try and block those who have chosen another path. The country must deal with 20 trillion dollars of debt - name calling the president elect isn't going to help.

Posted in: Americans don't think Trump is qualified. Why they elected him anyway See in context

One of BS's comments about '..elitist to the core..' is completely off the mark. Disgust with HRC and her lying and Obama's health care plans as well as rejection of HRC's connections to Wall Street et al - those were just some of the reasons people voted for DJT and against HRC. An exceptional piece of writing - but not in a good way.

I guess I've been lucky. I've had great neighbors. We never really socialized but I did give an English book of Alice in Wonderland (for kids less than 7) to one of my neighbor's daughters. They were so sweet! Generally I like the Japanese and that is usually reciprocated (spelling).
