@BurakuminDes.. Thats nice of the Vietnam PM to text his citizens: how about now he allows them to vote in an election some time, or allow opposition parties?

I believe that will come soon enough after this event....

@Octagon..@Zenpun.. @sanyuyulai...

Taiwan hired ultra China nationals as slave driver in factories and construction sites in Vietnam for larger profits. No wonder the local workers can't tell the difference between China and Taiwan businesses there.

The riot at Formosa construction site is a tit for tat between china workers and the local workers. Sadly injuries and fatalities on both sides..

China started it all and must be responsible for the chaos in the region. Put your blame squarely on the hostile Chinese regime and claim your compensation.

@yosun: It is a very sad situation, tit for tat at the Formosa construction site. Both sides got injured and killed. It is a very very sad situation. China started it all and should take the full responsibility, so enough of it, stop whinging will ya !..

@yosun: I won't wish to repeat myself here... but

If you bother to do some research and reading on this riot to find the real cause then you would understand the situation better..

Sadly, this is more or less relating to an industrial dispute in the boiling, and a spark of violence is just waiting to happen. This anti China demonstration event is just an excuse to trigger it.

The steel industrial complex Formosa in the north is under construction by a China's based contractor with a few thousand China's national workers and supervisors onsite. You know what they can be like as bosses.

The local Vietnamese workers are treated differently on the construction site, some have not been paid for a few months. In this case, It is the Taiwan based company, Formosa's management has created such a unfavorable and volatile working conditions on site, and is just simply asking for an industrial trouble.

The Taiwan and Singapore corps should learn from this event, try to hire more local workers to run for your overseas businesses. Using ultra China nationals as managers and supervisors for businesses in Vietnam, Philippine and other non Chinese speaking countries will not work well. A basic human resources management stuffs... good luck !

@Octagon: One more thing !.

Taiwan's businesses should learn from this event. Using China nationals to supervise and manage local workers in Vietnam, Philippine or other non Chinese speaking countries will create more trouble than its worth.

Learn from the US, Japan, S Korea, and others multinational corps to hire as much local workers as you can. A basic HR management 101 stuffs !

@Octagon: I agree that any violence and senseless destruction of properties must be condemned. Sadly, there will always be opportunists joining the mass looting, stirring the peace in any civil unrest events in our history.

Thanks for the news and info. Apparently the industrial complex Formosa in the north is under construction by a China's based contractor with a few thousand China's national workers and supervisors onsite. You know what they can be like as bosses.

The local Vietnamese workers are treated differently on those construction sites, some have not been paid for a few months. In this case, Formosa management has created such a unfavorable working condition on site and just simply waiting for industrial trouble.

@toshiko: Young people of Vietnam respect and look up to Japan as a big brother figure to develop their country future. Vietnam is a country with a young population. I won't be surprised to see Vietnam to foster a stronger alliance with Japan, and come to help protecting Japan in the future.

@yosun: The authority is doing their best to control the situation, not to further inflame the anger of the people with China. Only demonstrators and hundred local polices got injured. They are not attacking foreigners. No spreading rumor please !.

@blackrock: Rightly so!. It is a genuine demonstration as people have been bottled inside for so long from big red bro aggression. Sadly, those opportunist looters always there from any riots occurred in the US, Europe or UK or anywhere else.

@toshiko: All comments from Vietnamese people I read in many Vietnamese news websites are calling for calm and condemned the recent riots..... The local authorities are now prosecuting a few hundred of rioters... You need Google translate to read this: http://www.thanhnien.com.vn/pages/20140514/bat-giu-191-doi-tuong-gay-roi-kich-dong-o-binh-duong.aspx

I haven't seen any photos, but only read some reports mentioned a small over exited group of demonstrators crashed gates of some non-Chinese factories, to get workers join the mass a few days ago. If there is any physical damages to Korean or Japanese factories then could be just entry gates.

My real concern today is a news reported of a few hundred Vietnamese workers got hospitalized from drinking water in two factories in the north. The authority is calling for calm. What on earth is going on ?.

In the ideal world of regional peace in Asia is when both the DPRK and RPC are promoted into sainthood, and at peace with themselves and neighbors. I am positive and think that could be happening in the future, but right now it doesn't look all that possible.

No doubt, a lifting of the ban on 'collective self-defense' by Japan will been seen as a maturity, and the willingness to take on a more responsible leadership role for peace keeping in Asia.

Foster a stronger regional security ties with technology assistance to strengthen the alliance defence capability would be enough to deter any invasion from rogue countries. No need for Japan to send its military to defend any alliance members in that case.

@BurakuminDes: It is easy for us to look from the outside and with your critic comments..........

You would understand the reason why....... if read the Vietnamese news on how many poor Vietnam fishermen are rescued from the sea weekly since China stepped up the claim of the south china sea.

Anger by the young people in this case is genuine..... and this kind of riots is to expected in the US or anywhere else with opportunists looting.

Demonstration against China's aggression like this have been suppressed by the authority for years in fear of upsetting big brother china........ I am surprised Vietnam's young people have managed to hold back for so long....

The authority must be very careful now in dealing with theses arrests, not to send the wrong message of pro China's stand and further inflame the anger of the people.

I believe they will topple the government on the next riot..............

@bannedacctsam: Of course Vietnam always many steps behind China if following the current big bro foot steps !. It just like my real life experience..... Recalling my teenager years, I could not grow up to be a responsible adult until I stopped following my bad ass big bro and chose my own path in life:).

I bet you from this coastal stand, Vietnam is soon to choose a different path for her future development, and that would be a positive direction for a peaceful region don't you think !.

@bad hair day: You are absolutely right !. UNCLOS 1982 defined the EEZ of 200miles from the continental coast line. However, I think 12miles allowed for Island, and little or nothing for reefs and rocks. Perhaps we can understand why big red bro is so keen on controlling those reefs and rocks, filling them up and build mega cities to claim the natural title of Island.. Well, you'll know the rest to the result for east & south China seas if that to happen ...:)

Posted in: Chinese media call for territorial challengers to be made to pay an 'unaffordable price' See in context

@bad hair day. C'mon now !. Why try to complicate the issue here ?.

The simple fact is big red bro China is positioning the supper ocean rig 80miles inside Vietnam's 200miles exclusive economic zone. Defined by the UNCLOS 1982 and China was one of the key signatories.

What else is there to discuss really ?

According to Vietnam news with photos, big red bro China is protecting the rig with more than 80 surveillance ships, including sub hunters, warships and daily low passes by warplanes from Hainam’s airbase...

@Cliffy: The major China military bases are located at Hainam island, more than 600km to the north. According to Vietnam news, the supper ocean rig will be used as a new floating base by China, only 120miles off the coast of Hoi An city.... Anyway, there will be no real winners from any war, and that would be the last survival option for Vietnam when nothing else will work..

@bannedacctsam: It looks like Vietnam is starting the new road to shake free from the red shackel of communism and the big Red north as a form of self protection. Vietnam is turning Blue by the look of it !. May be their new flag will come out with the new colors Red, White and Blue land of the free !. One can see lots of potential for the new Vietnam .

I've been following the Vietnamese media over the last few weeks, and very much to my surprise seeing the new forms of free expression and discussions by many major national new papers. Many articles calling up for national reforms toward democratic and freedom. I've never seen such articles printed on the state run media before. I am a positive person, and I can see some good things for Vietnam emerging from the current coastal invasion by the big northern red bro.

China exposes it's devious and dangerous expansion plan in this case by create a dispute matter in a non-disputed coastal zone of Vietnam. Positioning the oil rig 80 miles into Vietnam's 200 miles exclusive economic zone is just a mean to legalize the ridiculous china's nine dash line.

You can compare this with a scenario when your good neighbor needs more land for expansion, but won't want to buy, simply moved the property boundary fence into your land when you are on vacation, and then demand a negotiation on your return !. How clever is that of China, LOL. Japan should watch out for the same trick from big brother china.

Yeah rite !, China and Taiwan are being bullied and robbed by the little Vietnam. China fishermen are robbed, their boats sunk and some got killed by those giant Vietnam maritime surveillance ships. Big brothers china are powerless to do anything about it and needs help from the US and Japan to fight off Vietnam:). Sure the world can see it clearly now. Such a magnificent play of crying wolf :)

Good to hear the truth from America !. Use the same logic to convince Vietnam to join the US-JAPAN alliance then you will get a positive response.

Japan, the time to act is now!. Helping to modernize Vietnam's armed forces give you a Sword of a Dragon to preserve peace in the region. Vietnam values friendship and loyalty. You can see how they've been supporting Russia in good and bad times since the Soviet era !.

Posted in: Japan, U.S. express concern at China-Vietnam maritime dispute See in context

/But, the covet - expect the US to be the 'white knight' to rescue Vietnam or any country for that matter by fighting a war with China, is merely wishful thinking/.

The Chinese regime knows that and that why it behaves it such a irresponsible way toward Vietnam. More importantly Vietnam knows that and always insists on diplomatic means and self reliance for protection. Meanly learning from China invasions from the past, including 1979 border war when big brother China invaded them just to foster a better tie with the US for economic aid. Vietnam current stand is admirable but probably won't work well when dealing with big brother China's wild west behaviors at the moment. Perhaps we can understand the reluctant nature of Vietnam to consider US-JAPAN Alliance as a mean of protection.

The Chinese regime should learn from the border invasion lesson of 1979 when Vietnam was isolated from the rest of the world by the US embargo at the time. Even so they managed to repel China invasion from the north, and liberated Cambodia from the genocidal Polpot's regime in the south. Just imagine what Vietnam can do now when it comes to survival and sovereignty protection with the full support of the world.

I believe Vietnam needs help to modernize her armed forces for self protection, not a direct involvement and that is a safer way Japan and the US and the rest of the free world should consider that as part the new regional security plan. I am very certain now we can rely on Vietnam to take on a Peaceful Role in the New World Order from her past experience of wars.

It is time for Japan to take on the responsible leadership role in the region. Just see pass the ugly ww2 past and try to stop the ww3 in the near future is your new wold order mission.

When China has finished up with a chain of coastal violations in the region, Japan will be seen a living Saint when compare to the irresponsible china by the regional countries. So pick your regional deputies like Australia and India to coach your allies well for the regional security tasks.

I refer to my comments on an article last week, predicting China's aggression toward the weaker countries Vietnam and Philippine, when the US and Japan declared strengthening ties helping to upgrade naval surveillance capability for SE Asian countries..

I am very concerned now after reading lots of crazy world domination comments from young Chinese nationals on Youtube about this coastal violation incident. Many have no idea about the destruction and suffering of wars. Many think conquering the world is the game they can play on the computer desktop, just simply unbelievable.

The young Vietnamese nationals seems to have a better restrain, and some expressed their country's desire for a peaceful mean of negotiation, and war appears to be their last choice for survival. I guess this explained why they always managed to kick the invaders out of their country in the past. Some Vietnamese expressed their country's desire to taking on the peace maker role in the new world order. Admirable and positive attitudes I would think..

Some comments from the Vietnamese nationals refer to the US/Japan alliance is an option they need to seriously considered after this coastal violation from China. My personal opinion is Vietnam would be able to face China aggression alone if they have similar military hardware as Japan. May be the US and Japan do not need to get involve directly, but helping with the modernization of the Vietnamese army and navy would be enough to keep China in it's peaceful place.

Unless ice wall is used as a temporary measure until the contaminated soils are removed. The real operational issue is maintaining the ice wall for the long period of time, say for 100 years of the safe radioactive decay period. Of course freezing ice wall requires constant supply source of power to keep the freezer system working. I would think using deep concrete wall with bentonite injection trench, may be costly at first for water proof, but could last for years with minimal maintenance requirement.

The same gang probably responsible for many in flight stealing incidents from unsuspected passengers. We flew with one of the South-East Asian airline a few months ago to the US via HK. One of the passenger raised the alarm as he lost some USD and personal items. The cabin crews caught two Chinese guys red handed searching through passenger overhead luggage for cash & jewelries. They were handed over to the HK polices at the airport for questioning when we landed . Better keep your eyes on your personal stuffs during night flight over SE Asia roots for these gangsters, they are professional thief..

You do have your point about the the danger of legacy fissile nuclear waste. Long terms treatment, management, and disposal of radioactive waste are currently the real technical challenges...
