Didn't we just witness some prime lessons of false-flag operations ? If there is a will, there is a way.

There is no court, prison or police for 'bully' countries. There is no high authority that can punish countries for their behavior. It's a mix of laws of the jungle and trying to be civil. So, avoiding becoming a victim in the first place is more important than trying to punish such countries. Fail to realize that and "you get what you were asking for" as they say.

Do you believe the antagonization will become any less? I personally believe that the danger of conflict will rise instead.

@UChosePooly

There are NATO countries that would never put themselves in danger for the sake of another NATO country. They are literally, only using NATO as a shield, and will not act to go and defend someone else.

@UChosePoorly

It doesn't matter who attacks, and in time anything is possible. Finland has a history of successfully fighting against Russia, and it has lands that it had lost to Russia. If it is backed by a huge military alliance it becomes more likely that one day they decide to re-claim those lands.

Another point, is that compared to current NATO members on the Russian border, Finland and Sweden together have a very formidable military. So the situation is a drastic change.

Finally, NATO is not as solid as it appears. It's anyone's guess what Turkey would do if a conflict happens, for example. I think it's obvious that their alignment is very murky. The US may decide to sit it out if a conflict happens depending on their internal political situation, and the same is true for the other member states. Not long ago, even the US commitment to NATO was in question. This may happen again.

There is always a first, you know. And the possibility of a single NATO country attacking Russia or it's own alliance and dragging the whole world in a war is rising with each new member on the Russian border.

One of the root causes of the invasion of Ukraine, and the conflict in Georgia for that matter, is pledging to join NATO. If anything, this move is degrading Finland's security because now instead of a dangerous neutral neighbor, they'll have a dangerous hostile neighbor.

Now, the question is what price would Finland and Sweden pay for aligning themselves with Russia's mortal enemy.

Purple, abortions in Japan are technically illegal, so there are circumstances where that is simply not available.

No contraception is perfect, and obviously the risk is higher for a sex worker.

Obviously, some women go insane when they end up with unwanted pregnancy, with no way of stopping it.

I wouldn't be surprised if they can't feel any emotional connection or responsibility for the baby, if it's just something that their body produced against their will. And then they end up looking for ways to get back to their past lives by getting rid of the baby in secret.

@klausdorth

Maybe you'll remember videos from the beginning of the war where Ukrainians were seen burning huge amount of documents at secured sites.

Both sides are capable of destroying and fabricating evidence. That's why a UN mission should've been organized and sent as soon as possible. When Russia asked for UN meeting about Bucha, the UK denied, so who's stalling? Why didn't they convene and discuss sending investigation team?

@UChosePoorly

Then why isn't Russia allowing a UN investigation to proceed?

They opposed ICC investigation, not a UN sanctioned one.

@UChosePoorly

Personally, just prove that evidence is true and not tempered or fabricated. Then prove beyond doubt that evidence points only to 1 course of events. That's the job an investigation should do, and then that should make it clear if Russia did war crimes, if Ukraine did war crimes, if lawless armed battalions did it or who knows what.

Posted in: Russia pummels vital port of Odesa, targeting supply lines See in context

@klausdorth

I have not reason to take "because I say so" claims as facts. Especially in a war time.

A UN sanctioned investigation needs to be done to uncover what actually happened. And ICC investigation is not the same as UN sanctioned investigation. ICC is not internationally recognized.

@UChosePoorly

One more thing about the satellite images. If they had them back then, why didn't they publish them at that time? If they had pictures of dead bodies on a presently Russian occupied street why would they put off showing them?

-2 ( +7 / -9 )

Posted in: Russia pummels vital port of Odesa, targeting supply lines See in context

@UChosePoorly

Bucha is not mentioned in the linked article.

Satellite images are not evidence because they don't have timestamps and are provided by a company working for the US DoD.

The Russian "tanks shooting up civilians" video, isn't actually showing what's happening, we see a "tank" shooting seemingly directed at a corner where some person would've emerged. We don't see what was actually happening with that 'civilian', he might have pulled out a weapon, he might have wrongly been identified as a threat, it may have been a warning shot. Later we're presented with the same location, but a completely different scene with someone dead with a bicycle nearby. This is not evidence.

About Bucha, what's the status of investigating the murders? Has such an investigation even started?

Why is there nothing about international organizations investigating it?

All we know about Bucha is that corpses appeared after Ukrainians moved in and that they say "Russia did this". And the fact that many of those corpses had white ribbons or had boxes of Russian humanitarian aid scattered around them is pretty suspicious.

Posted in: Banning Russian LNG imports tough without supply alternatives: trade minister See in context

@noriahojanen

Japan has to import the fuel for nuclear power plants, and quite a big part of it comes from countries in security pact with Russia. Expanding on nuclear power, means expanding on imports, and Japan can't safely 'punish' Russia while it relies on Russia's allies.

Not too long ago Putin signed a decree for making economic retaliation, I wonder what that would look like.

I bet they'll stop supplying the US with uranium at the very least.

Posted in: Ukraine evacuates civilians from steel plant under siege See in context

@UChosePoorly

I think, in contrast to the US, the government of Russia has traditionally not been one to be ruled by public opinion. Influencing the government is based on cooperating with it, as it is ultimately the one that makes the rules.

And to be honest, it's rather questionable whether popular public opinion should be the bedrock of national decision making. As people don't have access to all relevant and accurate information, and can be easily fooled or influenced by whoever controls information. In such a system, it's inevitable that mass media becomes a matter of national security and therefore become regulated.

Posted in: Ukraine evacuates civilians from steel plant under siege See in context

The Ukrainian government already lied once about what happened on Snake Island, so what reason is there to trust it this time? In fact, there are a lot of lies coming from it.

From the Russian side, they mostly tell about what villages they've taken, what battles they've won, and show various 'testimonials' from captured Ukrainian soldiers or random civilians.

In any case, judging what's true and what's false is nearly impossible, so we're left believing what makes sense to us.

@Antiquesaving

I would say, the only undeniable truth in this story, is that Antonio Guterres did a great job that is saving lives and paving a way for future UN/Red Cross initiatives for evacuating of civilians. Hopefully, the agreed humanitarian corridors will start working properly with their help.

Posted in: 50 more civilians rescued from besieged Mariupol steel plant See in context

It's worth noting that the Ukrainian government doesn't regard men between 18 and 60 as civilians. Just read how they're saying “women, children and elderly people”, while not mentioning anything about men such as that 31 years old guy.

It wouldn't be surprising if half of the civilians are such men, and they're not allowed to evacuate. And, it is also likely that they have their families with them, and that complicates evacuation because they refuse to split.

So, a few months ago they were screaming that sovereign nations are free to chose their alliances and what's best for their security, and now they say it's a "red line" if they do that.

It's apparent that nobody cares about any such principles when it comes to their own national security..
