Interestingly the fertility rate is the highest it's been in the last 20 years.

Sounds like an inside job. There are security cameras all over the place so I hope they catch them soon.

I enjoy spending Christmas with my family and my family lives in Japan, so "yes." How enjoyable Christmas is depends on who you are with and how much you want to enjoy it.

I find it funny that Japanese people will tell you quite proudly that this is popular "all over the world". without any sign of embarrassment.

I know. It's like Gannum Style 2.0

I feel as though I'm watching a 12-year old, whereas others like Fernandez and Chan are like men.

Well yes, he is baby-faced and has a boyish figure and the other 2 you mentioned are actually a few years older than him, but I doubt you'd feel that way if you had seen him skate last night. He quite literally "rocked" it.

Cute drama, catchy song, but I was most surprised by the fact that Hoshino Gen can act.

Posted in: More awards for Japanese star pitcher-batter Otani See in context

I don't think Otani would be the dual threat he is now if it hadn't been for the head coach of the Fighters. I hope he continues being a modern day young Babe Ruth even when he goes over to the states.

Posted in: Police offer ramen discounts to elderly as incentive not to drive See in context

How about reducing the cost of public transportation and making it more readily available?

I don't know about other prefectures, but in Tokyo you can get a "Silver Pass" for a 1000 yen per year if you are elderly and not earning money. It includes Toei subway lines, Toden, Toei Bus, etc. If you're making money you can still get it for 20,000 yen a year, which is less than 2000 yen per month. A regular Toei Bus monthly pass is 9000 yen.

Posted in: Some women find escape from poverty in sex trade See in context

Aly, I think you need to understand that it is 1.2 million per person. A family of 4 with a stay at home wife would need the dad to be making around 5 million a year to stay above the poverty line. As for the single mother in the article, she needs to be making 2.4 million, or 200,000 yen a month.

Meanwhile Kershaw's postseason struggles (jinx?) continue. His ERA in the regular season was 1.69 but it's a whopping 5.84 in the postseason. His WHIP is also an alarming 1.46, about double his regular season numbers.

Posted in: Finding a half decent gym in Japan: A survival guide See in context

There are a lot of public gyms in Tokyo names " sports center" " kenko (health) plaza" or whatnot. Some of them are as cheap as 200 yen per 2 or 3 hour session. Since I can only go once a week tops, these are much more economical. Some of them provide a fairly large free weight area with plenty of options.
