It would have been safer to just let the fans in the stadium and space them out.

Greece went bankrupt also due to the Olympics cost.

Japan has a 5.5 trillion dollar economy. 25 billion amortized over 10 years is a rounding error.

This was an awesome olympics! If it had fans, it would be one of the greatest. So much drama and poignant moments. It even had a defection by an athlete.

Some of my favorite memories include Dean Boxall's pelvic thrusting, Warholm's record-breaking OMG moment and look of disbelief, Joker's epic meltdown at Ariake stadium, the high-jumpers sharing their gold medals, athletes putting medals on each other, etc. There were so many moments.

I said this before the games started but sports fans in Japan are really going to regret missing out on a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness greatness in person. Suga and Koike's original plan of letting a limited amount of vaccinated fans into the stadiums was the correct one but they choked just like Biles and Osaka and Joker.

Just sad.

This was an amazing game! Busta just imposed his will and Joker broke down. I am so sad that Japanese sports fans are missing out on an exciting olympics.

If the athletes are fully vaccinated why shouldn’t they? They are probably at more risk from the Japanese population than any risk they might represent to the population.

Well said. The athletes are more tested for covid than the general population.

If I were in charge, I would have made an amendment to the constitution and allowed for a hard lock-down of the unvaccinated and allowed vaccinated people to go to the games.

Stop blaming the Olympics! Even if there are no games, Japan would still have the same infection rates because there is no hard lock-down.

The government says 33.4 million people, or 26.3% of the public, have been fully vaccinated and 47 million, or 37%, have had at least one shot as of Monday. About 25 million elderly people, or about 70%, are completely inoculated while 30 million, or 85%, have had at least one dose.

LET THE VACCINATED PEOPLE GO TO THE GAMES!

Plus covid deaths in Japan are lower than tiny Belgium and the Czech Republic and the country has low obesity rates. The risks of a masked, vaccinated person getting or spreading the virus at an outdoor olympic stadium is very small. In conclusion...

LET THE VACCINATED PEOPLE GO TO THE GAMES!

Just in our ward there were only 6 vaccination locations at first only starting in July did they add about a dozen more only to then run out of vaccine.

Yes, but 40 million people are vaccinated now. So let vaccinated people attend the games!

as it turns into a pretext for discrimination and a lurch toward more authoritarianism

It would be sad and ironic if a Chinese virus is responsible for turning Japan into a more xenophobic, police state. Personally, I think Suga should just let vaccinated people attend the games.

The Olympics should be permanently relocated to Athens, where they originated.

Greece is broke and I don't see the refugee crisis abating.

It is the middle of winter here now so perfect weather for outdoor sports. 23-25 degrees every day very little rain if any at all.

This is a great selling point in the age of climate change. The summer games should be held in the southern hemisphere.

The rising sun banned in its own country Japan? The Koreans won this round.

The rising sun flag has been proudly worn by British rock bands for decades and is a staple of pop culture and global design. The Koreans lost this war.

I have noticed that the Olympics, the officials and athletes have become a scapegoat for a lot of disgruntled people who should instead be taking aim at their government for Japans failure to vaccinate the people.

Some politicians are covering their arse for screwing up the vaccine roll-out and building a narrative that the evil foreigners are responsible for spreading covid onto the hapless, pure Japanese public. I don't agree with this tactic and I think it will eventually backfire. The better solution is to accept the risks and just enjoy the games and let vaccinated people attend in person. While the delta variant is more contagious, it is also less fatal and remember that Japan has less covid deaths than Belgium or the Czech republic.

Go in and give everybody in their team a proper pcr test instead of the sham self saliva tests, that will never find any cases, and there are sure to be few positives that they can eliminate from the games in retribution, if not the whole team

Japan needs to give Korean athletes the Chinese-style covid anal swab test.

An Olympic medal is worth a lot more to a Korean athlete than to a Japanese athlete, because military conscription waiver is tied to winning an Olympic medal.

Are you saying Korean athletes are motivated by cowardice?

some people may be concerned about the fully vaccinated people coming into contact with those who are unvaccinated and the unvaccinated getting ill.

You are more likely to catch covid getting on a crowded train on your daily commute to work than as a vaccinated spectator wearing a mask watching golf on a golf course or surfing at a beach or at a marathon.

So why not allow those FULLY VACCINATED the option to attend if they want to go!?

At this point, I feel the same way. Let the fully and even partially vaccinated attend the games if they follow the proper precautions.
