... and maybe, just maybe, it was staged by the producers as well.

Absolutely scenarios are set up. These shows have writers. The actors are told to be hyper versions of themselves. But just like wrestling, the storylines may be contrived, but the consequences can be deadly.

Tech companies and their social media platforms doesn't care about humanity. They just unleash social drug after social drug. If you're a user of Insta, FB, Twitter etc, then you got a choice to make - get off them or continue supporting the real enemies of society. Any excuse why you can't get off them is BS.

DaDudeToday  06:14 pm JST

You act like everyone could afford to have a standard vehicle. Do you realize how much more gas, tax and the service check costs compared to a kei car?

That's not true. You can get a 2nd hand car for less than 500,000 yen that is far safer than a new Kei Car.

In Osaka you see mothers driving their children around quite often without a seatbelt on. You also see plenty of mothers driving with a mobile phone in their hand and a seatbeltless child in the back.

Honestly, Japan doesn't care about the safety of its children in cars. Plenty of ways Japan is great in terms of safety but this certainly isn't one of them. And it's such a simple thing that is easy to fix.

I asked a mother once why she didn't make her child put on a seatbelt. The answer? Because the child doesn't like it... Says it all really.

I'm not saying this little girl wasn't wearing a seatbelt either. We don't know. I hope she was for the sake of the grieving parents.

Posted in: Japan wants to go cashless, but elderly aren't so keen See in context

I can't believe all the love for cash. I barely carry any cash with me anymore and it's purely for emergencies. If a place doesn't offer cashless I won't shop there. It's fantastic to have a slim wallet without any coins in it. It's also a lot safer not carrying around 5-30,000yen in one's wallet/purse as is standard in this country.

But not all cashless payments are equal.

The Good...

CCs are great for accruing points and getting free flights.

Apple Watch using cashless payments is insanely convenient. It can be used for purchases and also a Suica card can be put on it so no need to pull anything out of your pocket when getting on any train or bus.

The Not So Good

PayPay is a PITA. It works but it's not very convenient which is one of the points of a cashless system.

South Korea are deluded and it's kind of sneaky to continue to ask for money after it has already been settled twice. You can't keep moving the boundaries and expect the other team to just play along.

As an outsider to this dispute I look at it as both countries (but mainly SK) being small, petty and childish.

It's good that SKs have stopped coming to Japan in droves. Means far fewer tourists on the streets and while some tourists is a great thing, Japan has sold its soul for the dollar with tourism. It's ruining cities. And let's face it, trickle down is BS. they money is going into the coffers of the government and a select group of companies who pay pretty average wages.

Posted in: Feminist scholar calls Japan's gender problem 'human disaster' See in context

One night, my wife (before she was my wife) got a call and said she had to go home. I was puzzled and ask if something was wrong. She said it was her brother calling and he told her the rubbish needed organising and preparing for collection the next morning. I was quite surprised and told her to just call him back and tell him he can do it himself. But she went home and did it. About a week later her family went on a trip back to their hometown. My wife was happy because she didn't need to drive so she could drink at the family reunion while the brother couldn't because he had to drive. That was his job. I think you'll actually find many Japanese women are quite happy with the way things work in Japan. Obviously not the ones in relationships involving DV or abuse, but many aren't looking to be Company presidents or the like. The problem is for the ones who do want to do that there definitely needs to be some fairness in the pathways.

It's obvious this guy has been doing the job too long and hates the job. What middle aged man wants to be teaching 2-4 years old on a daily basis? He's lost his cool, lashed out in quite a forceful way at a child who seems to be naughty. Doesn't excuse the adults actions though. In fact lashing out at 2 years old is beyond acceptable.

As for him hitting the kids often, I'd say the kindergarten may tolerate this behaviour, otherwise how could he continue to get away with it?

I hate the number of tourists in Japan. The county can't handle this many people and it ruins the cities and places the hordes of tourists visit. I've got nothing against manageable tourism, but when it's this pervasive, it's absolutely nothing more than a massive grab for cash by the government and some large corporations. It's sad to see every major city losing it's soul to tourism. The very things people are coming to see is being washed away by tourism.

The comments are insensitive and foolish even though they were technically correct. But, I think the US military presence in Okinawa hasn't just been a negative one (the rapes and other major crimes have been inexcusable). It has added to the culture and made Okinawa feel quite unique. The amount of interesting restaurants there is reason enough to visit the main island. Those restaurants have only come about because of the large US population situated there. Many of the great restaurants there are run by former military personnel who now call Okinawa their home. It's shameful that Okinawans were never given the chance to decide what would happen with their islands, but we can't change the past at this point.

Posted in: Australia's women players to be paid for test matches under new deal See in context

Equal pay in sports debate is a complicated beast.

(FOR) If you pay women more then more women will be attracted to a traditional male sport professionally and thus the female version will become more exciting to watch due to better athletes being involved.

(FOR) The popularity of a sport doesn't need to be based on who is the best, fastest etc. It's about the competition. College football is extremely popular in the USA, but it's not the top level.

(AGAINST) Sport is based on popularity. The more people who watch it, the more money goes into it. Trying to artificially manipulate it won't work in the long run.

(AGAINST) Many people want to watch the top level of sport. Unfortunately most traditional male sports like rugby, cricket etc, aren't conducive to women being able to match their male counterparts due to biology. For example, the fastest female cricket bowler is around 115-125 kph. Compare that with the fastest man who is around 150-160 kph. It's like riding a roller coaster at ¾ speed.

In Melbourne, they introduced a female AFL league. It is very popular. 20,000 to a game. Thing is, entry is free and Melbournians will watch paint dry in a stadium if given the chance. They are an incredible population of live sports watching people. The aim would be for it to gain traction in the minds of the public and then slowly introduce payment at the gate and build from there. To get a young generation of people interested so in the future they will watch it on TV and then advertising dollars can support it at a professional level.

The player of the tournament last year was previously a man who had a sex change operation and got her testosterone levels down to the required levels. A lot of the female born players were very unhappy about it. Said it was an uneven playing field.

How about female tennis? Shorter games, less advertising and fewer people watching on TV, yet the same amount of prize money. Is this okay or is it wrong?

Well done to this old geezer. The kids were probably playing were they weren't supposed to. Parents in this country rarely tell their kids to be quiet and think about those around them or stop them from doing what they want. Especially if it's a boy. That doesn't mean kids won't be noisy... they are kids..., but at least trying to educate them on such things is important. The amount of times I've had to tell kids to stop their anti-social behaviour in front of the parents is astounding. The parents just stand there and watch little Taro be a little brat. So this bloke is my new Hero!

I think in any country, if you stand out you become sort of sh*t magnet.

I experience things on a daily basis here; a vent from a Japanese who would otherwise hold his tounge in the company of his countrymen, a dirty eye,and avoidance, an obfusacation of events, situational ethics, occasional shove or push etc. .I dont think its a healthy thing, because for the body it takes its toil. I found my own ways of dealing with it, and it never involves denying or apologising. Haha… Settle petal. Nah. No way. It works both ways. Sure it can be uncomfortable sometimes, but the benefits are great in Japan. Gotta take the good with the small amounts of bad. I think you are projecting a little. Maybe your personality or general atmosphere is causing these things to happen way more often than they should. Maybe you need to seriously think about leave Japan for your own health.
