Posted in: U.S. sets new lower salt target for food industry See in context

The AMA in the States previously recommended 2G per day for adults.

I was hospitalized in Japan several years ago, and asked that my meals be from their "reduced sodium" menu. The first evening, when the reduced sodium meal came, the nutrition label said it had 6G of salt . . . 3x the recommended level in the States, yet, I assume it was still several grams below the Japanese daily average, which must be crazy high.

"It is called empathy. Empathize with them."

Actually, it's called sympathy if one has never been in the same situation and experienced it themselves. Empathy is when you have the same or very similar experience as the person you share the sorrow with.

Not having been in her shoes, I can't say murder or mercy killing was/wasn't the right answer, but it seems wrong to me, given other options.

So weak-willed. Why stop there? How about world peace, cancer breakthroughs, etc. ? You get my drift...

I think it's a very good idea; liked the curriculum, as well.

Just hope they're totally honest about Fukushima waters.

Nike is non-bizsona (non-persona for businesses) since they featured Kaepernick. They can fall off the planet for all I care. Threw away any Nike items I had.

NO.

Do there need to be programs and some funds available for those who are -unable- to function in society? Yes.

Do we need universal income? No. There will always be those who don't even try to make their own way and expect the gov't to bail them out. 'Tis socialism. Never!

Ha! For those who think this story is about tipping . . you've missed the point. It's about philanthropy.

Tipping itself is a nasty custom; I think most would prefer to have a system of pricing built into costs and do away with tipping. Why should customers have to step in where the owner of an establishment shirks responsibility to pay a reasonable wage?

I hope tipping doesn't become a custom in Japan, where virtually all min. wage workers don't think the job at that level is a permanent career.

Surprised it took this long. Always thought ramen had toooooo much oil in it, anyway. Unnecessary; takes away from the taste of the noodles themselves.

There is still, most unfortunately, a small number of callous, small-minded gov't employees/bureaucrats in Japan who think that non-Japanese in their custody are sub-human, not worthy of human decency and respect, when in fact, they are the ones not worth of same. Eye for an eye: they should be put in the very same detention room/cell where the young lady was held until they become sick and die. May their souls (oops...my bad. This assumes they even had souls.) rot in hell for eternity.

Ditto baktaka. Japan, by default, faults the operator of the larger/stronger vehicle. ex: truck vs car, car vs bicycle, bicycle vs pedestrian. This is wrong. Japanese justice and law enforcement need to grow up. (1) as others have posted, the driver can't control what others do, i.e., darting out in front of them, and thus, shouldn't automatically be arrested. Stupid. (2) Where does Japan get off calling drivers, because they have a license and drive over to see their aunt and uncle or go somewhere, "professional"? Geeze

Hmm . . it's not an "old wives' tale" about MSG when, after eating something with MSG in it, it triggers chest pain and causes BP to go up. Those who haven't experienced it (yet) can easily call it an old wives' tale, but my cardiologist (renowned btw) says to stay away from it.

in this case, Power = Position. The US will never go up against Russia to assert Japan's position/claim on the islands, and Japan isn't strong enough, even if they changed Article 9 radically, on her own. Russia is pouring investments into the islands. Though Russia entered the war against Japan as a waaaaaay Johnny-come-lately, return of the islands t'ain't never gonna happen. Yet . . . Russian likes to dangle the carrot out..:(

Posted in: What is umami, the mysterious taste of Japanese cooking? See in context

I don't believe "umami" exists as an extrasensory receptor in/on/ or near the tongue. It's a combination of other receptors already known to exist. Oh, and we all known how beneficial MSG (mainly made by Ajinomoto) is for health . . . . . Not! That stuff will kill you . . . literally!

Father to Toyota President: I appreciate your coming by and your words of encouragement that bullying, etc., and thousands of years of power harassment in Japanese culture will be addressed. Um . . . to that end, how about an advisory committee to your office, comprised of a majority of outside civilians with access to the Labor Dept. and the media, to ensure current and future Toyota employees are protected and being led by competent leaders, not being forced to work, which may or may not be barely a step above slavery?

It was the right decision by the judge, but agree it is a temporary measure which will likely be overturned higher up.

Interesting that this is an AP article, which vainly tries to say that this wasn't possible under Trump, but is possible now under Biden. Ah, the vagary. It is precisely because Biden is so weak that SK now realizes they'll have to be nice and play with others to resist the elephant in the room - - China. Biden and his son, Comrade Hunter, are currying favor with China, so SK can either go it alone or be a reliable partner in the US-Japan-SK partnership.

Racism, in any form, is pathetic. Virtually all Americans, of any ethnicity, don't hate Asians; it's the 0.0001% that are racist, do terrible things, and grab headlines, thus inculcating the rest of us.

Though there's not much trust in gov't officials, the daily #s of covid infections is, IMO, at a crisis level in Japan and temporary draconian measures, such as a complete lockdown for 2 weeks and capacity of the shinkansen and other travel modes at 50% are needed, with significant fines. This "please don't go out and drink" and "please don't travel" don't cut it.
