Not familiar with Shakespeare, eh? Has nothing to do with protests like in HK/elsewhere. It means you're trying very hard to prove to others and to yourself a point that nearly no one else believes. It carries the underlying meaning that your point may very well not hold water, and by extension, disingenuous.

He -chose- to violate the orders in an institution (sumo) known for its strict adherence to tradition and order. He put in his offer to resign out of spite, not out of any feeling of have dishonored his stable. Ok - - all that aside. Abi didn't know squat about sumo. Japanese consider outside their own home to be somebody else's problem and accept that it's going to be dirty (among other adjectives I could use here). IMO, those required to clean train station and/or public toilets probably, in the Japanese mind, rank right up there with the eta of days past.
